XXL: Obesity and the Limits of Shame (U of T Centre for Public Management Series on Public Policy & Administration), by Neil Seeman, Patri

Obese individuals are twice as likely to experience heart failure as non-obese people. More than eighty-five per cent of type 2 diabetes sufferers are overweight. And in the United States, obese and overweight individuals make up more than two-thirds of the adult population. Public health organizations and governments have traditionally tried to combat obesity through shame-inducing policies, which assure people that they can easily lose weight by eating right and exercising. This generic approach has failed, as it does little to address the personal, genetic, and cultural challenges faced by obese individuals.

XXL directly confronts the global public health sector by proposing an innovative, alternative policy - the 'healthy living voucher' - for decreasing high calorie consumption and its related health problems. Neil Seeman and Patrick Luciani argue that many public health campaigns have made the problem of obesity worse by minimizing how difficult it is for individuals to lose weight. XXL challenges governments to abandon top-down planning solutions in favour of bottom-up innovations to confront the obesity crisis.

Review
'Messrs. Seeman and Luciani's suggestions will annoy both the left and the right. Market forces are anathema to the top-down thinking of many on the left, and handing money to the "undeserving" is anathema to many on the right. But the very fact that their idea defies conventional wisdom suggests that it is a good one.' (Matt Ridley, international bestselling author of The Rational Optimist and Genome The Wall Street Journal)

'This book takes a fresh, bold, and deep look at an important human error stemming from the illusions of control and the overestimation of knowledge of the human body and behavior. It shows the mistakes committed when governments, in a top-down and naïve manner, try to control our biology.' (Nassim Nicholas Taleb, Distinguished Professor, New York University Polytechnic Institute and author of New York Times best-sellers The Black Swan and Fooled by Randomness)

'This book provides the one thing that's sorely lacking amidst the cacophony of claims about what will fix the obesity crisis: A recognition that this is a massively multi-factorial problem utterly resistant to universal, simple solutions, and that individuals require customized strategies for losing and keeping off weight. The idea that public policy can and must support individualized weight-loss plans is as close to a winner as we're likely to see.' (David H. Freedman, best-selling author of Wrong: Why Experts Keep Failing Us – And How to Know When Not to Trust Them, and contributing editor of Inc. Magazine)

'This slim book is fat with data and ideas, and stands on the imaginative frontier of a very fast-moving public policy debate ... It's bound to cause controversy and thought as we face the public health challenge of trying to engineer weight control.' (Michael Bliss, University Professor Emeritus, University of Toronto, and author of The Making of Modern Medicine and The Discovery of Insulin)

'Promising, thought-provoking and smart.' (David Frum, best-selling author and adviser to former President George W. Bush)

'XXL critically examines the money and policies we're throwing at the obesity epidemic and proposes a new, thoughtful and sensitive approach—healthy living vouchers—that offers meaningful incentives to those who ever have, or ever will, struggle with the emotional and physical battle of weight gain.' (Bertha K Madras, Professor of Psychobiology, Harvard Medical School)

'XXL offers both an authoritative yet readily accessible review of the relevant science and, even more important, an imaginative proposal for government action.' (Frederick Lowy, OC, MD, CM, LLD, President and Vice-Chancellor Emeritus, Concordia University, former Dean, Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto)

(This title received Outstanding rating by members of the 2012 University Press Books committee…. They are essential additions to most library collections)

‘Entertaining and insightful are not two words you would normally associate with a book about obesity, but this book certainly has both traits…. I would recommend this book for all large public libraries

(Christina Beaird University Press Books for Public & Secondary School Libraries, 2012)

‘The authors have provided us with a clear summary of our current obesity challenges alongside the range of possible avenues to take on this “wicked problem,” all smartly compiled in this readable book.’ (Terrence Sullivan CMAJ February 2013)

Poor citation, weird claims.
By C. Cornell
This book is not without merit, and it may be a decent introduction for those new to the field of obesity research in the public health sector. But this work is seriously lacking in academic rigor and makes unqualified, sometimes downright strange statements.

Page 7. There is a passage concerning the self-esteem of "chubby" children which seems fundamental to the frame of obesity and self-esteem, yet none of the statements which the authors make and generalize to overweight children are cited at all. This is one example of a fairly common trend throughout the book.

This book also suffers from linguistic concerns as well. On page 9, the authors refer to severely obese people as "XXLs because of the size of the clothes they need to wear," which seems 1.) unprofessional, 2.) a really inaccurate way of categorizing people, and 3.) totally unnecessary if the term "severely obese" already exists to classify these people. Later, on page 28, the authors describe mean weight increase in men and women over time. While men experienced a 20 pound mean increase between 1981 and 2008, women experienced an 11 pound mean increase in the time time period. Yet the authors choose to write that men simply increased mean weight, while women "ballooned" to their new mean weight, which is odd since the male mean increase was almost double that of the female increase. Linguistically troubling habits plague the rest of this book as well.

Even the authors' policy recommendations seem poorly thought out. To use one of many, many points as an example, on page 109 they recommend giving food vouchers to poor people so that they can buy "organic" meats and dairy. Considering the authors' supposed expertise in the field of public health, it is confusing that they would make such a recommendation given that most studies looking at organic foods do not claim that organic food is better at controlling weight that non-organic foods. There is nothing about a food being free from pesticides that decreases its caloric content. People who eat organic foods may have lower BMIs, on average, than those who eat non-organic foods, but this is likely due to those people who eat organic foods being of higher SES and having many other healthy eating/living habits that are co-linear with buying organic foods.

Ultimately, this book is distracting in how many errors and truly bizarre moments it contains, which takes away from some of its better points. It may be useful to own simply because it has a decent bibliography, but I would be extremely hesitant to reference this book itself in any type of academic writing.

(Disclosure: I am a PhD student working in the field of sociology of medicine, focusing on obesity in the United States.)

Maybe it IS your fault
By David J. Secord
One of the problems of the current obesity epidemic is a lack of self-control. This manifests itself in the all too oft seen excuse of "it's not my fault", with the admonition that if it weren't for the `bad genes', `unavailability of good food', `unavailability of time to make better choices', etc, etc, the weight could be lost.
The real problem with this is that obesity--when not caused by some endocrine dyscrasia or severe genetic disorder, and both are fairly rare--is easily addressed and easily solved. It really is. If you eat more calories than you need and will burn during the day, you will gain weight. Conversely, if you burn more calories than you consume, you will lose weight. Millions of people have done it and continue to do it. The first step is decide that your obesity is YOUR problem and not try and blame it on someone else, or something else.
I'm of the opinion that the age of "there's no such thing as personal responsibility" has fostered a number of problems in our society. These would include the era of entitlement we see among many people and a softening of our spirit, our bodies and our resolve (in many ways).
The arrival of bariatric surgery has not helped this. Al Roker went on an eating binge two days before his surgery, just to show how weak and unserious he was about taking responsibility for being fat. I see a lot of patients who think there must be a pill or a surgery or a magic wand which will cure them of their problem, whereas a little resolve and a backbone would go a long way. Losing the weight would make the joint pain or the plantar fascial pain or the muscle pain or the poorly controlled diabetes mellitus or the hypertension or just about anything else you're dealing with more manageable. Usually, when suggested, the retort is: "doctor, I can't lose weight. I've tried everything".
Just as I hear a large number of people claim that they "can't stop smoking", I hear a very large number of individuals claim that they "can't lose weight" and, in reality, what they really mean is "I won't quit smoking" or "I won't lose weight". That would take some hard work and some effort and--more importantly--would take some self-control.
In the 1970's, there was a book entitled: "I'm o.k., you're o.k." and this book is the obese person's version of that tome. Unfortunately, you may not be o.k. and telling you that you are fosters both a type of co-dependency and a concerted effort to gaze elsewhere but the mirror for the culprit and does no one any good. Diet and exercise will allow almost everyone to lose the extra weight they don't need. That's a fact. If you're embarrassed when someone stares at you because you have a 120" waist, well, you should be, as it isn't normal. Whether you're Walter Hudson or Manuel Uribe--or a lot less--you were not meant to look that way, eat that much or blame it on someone or something else.

The Bird Factory, by David Layton

Luke Gray is happy with the way things are. He’s finally settled into married life with pragmatic, level-headed Julia, free from his family’s absurdities and the chaos of his childhood. Even his mobile-bird factory seems less like a curse he can’t shake. But things change when Julia decides they should have a baby… and nothing happens. A trip to the fertility clinic leads to loosened boxers, hormone injections, and some time alone with a plastic vial and a stack of dirty magazines. How could things sink so far, so fast?

His male pride in shreds, Luke finds himself fending off intrusive questions about his sperm from his mother, and avoiding further involvement in his philandering father’s affairs. And with Julia more and more a stranger determined to succeed, it’s no wonder Luke begins to fantasize about a single, young employee’s bee-stung lips. But when complications put Julia in the hospital, Luke is forced to confront his tangled feelings about family, children, and commitment, and decide what he will, or won’t, do for love.

The Bird Factory is a high-energy, darkly humorous novel about surviving your family and starting a new one, about the stupid things good men do, and why women put up with them. It introduces David Layton as a sharp observer of human fallibility and a striking new fictional voice.

Review
"A bright and thoroughly charming book. David Layton writes my favourite kind of prose– clean as a whistle, straight ahead and, most important, irresistibly readable. No froth or curlicues for this guy."
–David Gilmour

“A novel pregnant with sardonic desire and tender pessimism. David Layton births memorable characters conjoined by their need to confront a future as dispassionate as a fertility clinic and as possible as a newborn child.”
–Hal Niedzviecki

About the Author

I BLAME THE RACCOONS.

They’d moved into our new home with us, using the pink, fibrous insulation of our unrenovated third-floor attic as bedding and the wooden beams as roadways. In late spring the mother produced a litter, and as we lay in bed we could hear the scampering of small feet above our heads.

Julia gave up on my promises to get rid of them and called the exterminators. Three men came to our house and after crawling around the attic for ten minutes said they wanted two thousands dollars to make it “raccoon-proof.” Julia threw the men out and let the raccoons stay.

“If we’re going to spend two thousand dollars, we may as well put the money toward renovating the space into a real third floor,” she said.

The attic was reachable through a trap door. We climbed the narrow ladder that dropped from the ceiling in the bedroom closet and hoisted ourselves up into the empty space, careful not to disturb the raccoons, especially the mother, who we feared might attack us if she felt threatened. I swept the room with my flashlight, stopping just to one side of where Julia thought the mother and her litter might be hiding.

I suggested a guest bedroom, a den, an office.

Julia had another idea. “There might come a time when we’ll want to use the upstairs space for something else.” She smiled, an extra big smile because it was dark and she knew her words would make me uneasy.

“Something else?” I asked.

“We’ve been together four years, Luke. And we’ve been married for two.”

“That’s a pretty long time,” I admitted, though it didn’t feel long at all, just an eye-blink of time.

“You’d make a great father.”

For a second, I thought this was why she wanted a child — so I could be a good father — but I came to my senses and recognized that this wasn’t for me, but for us, for Julia.

Backing down the ladder, Julia questioned what sort of stairs we might put in. I said that unless we punched a hole in our slanted roof and put in a large dormer, the stairs would have to rise steeply, to prevent our heads from bumping into the ceiling. Another option was to put in a spiral staircase.

“So, what do you think?” asked Julia.

“I think a spiral.”

“I meant about having a baby.”

We were standing at the bottom of the ladder. Julia picked off loose bits of insulation that clung to my clothes and I had the weirdest impression she’d carry on until she hit bone.

“Why don’t we do the third floor first, maybe get that out of the way.”

“Wouldn’t it be better if we co-ordinated our activities, if we did the attic and got pregnant all at the same time?”

“It’s a suggestion,” I confessed, and because one was associated with the other, I began to think of children as creatures who demanded extra space or were themselves extra space; little attics, where instead of desks and beds we’d install our longings and needs. A kind of endless renovation project.

This wasn’t the best way to think about children, but at least it was a start. I hadn’t thought about marriage either until Julia proposed: “It’s time we got married,” she’d said.

And we did. She’d slipped on my wedding ring like someone who’d had to send flowers to herself.

It wasn’t that I hadn’t wanted to marry Julia or that I didn’t want to have children with her. It was just that I was a firm believer in not rocking the boat. Things were good. Everything was fine. I was happy, so was Julia. Why take a chance with change? Change was bad, or might be bad; it was certainly unpredictable. I’d been raised inside a rocking boat and had grown up permanently seasick. Having children might not only start the swaying again, it might tip the whole boat over. Julia, however, was an excellent swimmer, amorously embracing the water with every stroke of her arms. She said it was an illusion for anyone to think their boat could bob in exactly the same place, day after day, month after month; eventually, the current would press against you. Julia insisted that life’s perpetual adversity forced you to strive toward a better future. And Julia saw a future with children.

***

Sex for the next few months was urgent and passionate and spontaneous. We had sex when we felt like it, and we felt like it quite a lot. Despite my concerns about children, my body seemed to possess nothing but willing confidence. Every flicker of desire was like a potential sign of success. But after six months with no results, a rising measure of fatigue and anxiety began to set in; after eight, panic. Julia began to bring home pregnancy manuals, change her foods, make sure my boxers were loose, and call out with mock lust, “It’s time for servicing!” when her temperature was right.

At first we laughed because our behaviour was so much like what we imagined a desperate couple’s would be. But as the months wore on, we stopped laughing — exactly when, I can’t say — and our sexual trysts became increasingly mechanical. We began to sense that we were failing at the most basic human function. Our bodies were supposed to do certain things, mysterious but common enough — so why wasn’t anything happening?

Stone Angel, by Margaret Laurence

The Stone Angel, The Diviners, and A Bird in the House are three of the five books in Margaret Laurence's renowned "Manawaka series," named for the small Canadian prairie town in which they take place. Each of these books is narrated by a strong woman growing up in the town and struggling with physical and emotional isolation.

In The Stone Angel, Hagar Shipley, age ninety, tells the story of her life, and in doing so tries to come to terms with how the very qualities which sustained her have deprived her of joy. Mingling past and present, she maintains pride in the face of senility, while recalling the life she led as a rebellious young bride, and later as a grieving mother. Laurence gives us in Hagar a woman who is funny, infuriating, and heartbreakingly poignant.

"This is a revelation, not impersonation. The effect of such skilled use of language is to lead the reader towards the self-recognition that Hagar misses."—Robertson Davies, New York Times

"It is [Laurence's] admirable achievement to strike, with an equally sure touch, the peculiar note and the universal; she gives us a portrait of a remarkable character and at the same time the picture of old age itself, with the pain, the weariness, the terror, the impotent angers and physical mishaps, the realization that others are waiting and wishing for an end."—Honor Tracy, The New Republic

"Miss Laurence is the best fiction writer in the Dominion and one of the best in the hemisphere."—Atlantic

"[Laurence] demonstrates in The Stone Angel that she has a true novelist's gift for catching a character in mid-passion and life at full flood. . . . As [Hagar Shipley] daydreams and chatters and lurches through the novel, she traces one of the most convincing—and the most touching—portraits of an unregenerate sinner declining into senility since Sara Monday went to her reward in Joyce Cary's The Horse's Mouth."—Time

"Laurence's triumph is in her evocation of Hagar at ninety. . . . We sympathize with her in her resistance to being moved to a nursing home, in her preposterous flight, in her impatience in the hospital. Battered, depleted, suffering, she rages with her last breath against the dying of the light. The Stone Angel is a fine novel, admirably written and sustained by unfailing insight."—Granville Hicks, Saturday Review

"The Stone Angel is a good book because Mrs. Laurence avoids sentimentality and condescension; Hagar Shipley is still passionately involved in the puzzle of her own nature. . . . Laurence's imaginative tact is strikingly at work, for surely this is what it feels like to be old."—Paul Pickrel, Harper's

“One of the most convincing – and the most touching – portraits of an unregenerate sinner.”
–Time

From the Hardcover edition.

From the Back Cover
With her life nearly behind her, the witty, irascible, and fiercely proud Hagar Shipley escapes from her nursing home and sets out in search of a way to reconcile herself to her tumultuous past. Through her reflections, we come to know the rebellious young bride in a remote prairie town, her love for her two sons, the freedom she claimed, and the joys she denied herself. In this bold, final step toward freedom and independence, Hagar gains a deeper understanding of the meaning of acceptance. Her thoughts evoke not only the rich pattern of her past experience but also the meaning of what it is to grow old and to come to terms with mortality.

About the Author
MARGARET LAURENCE was the author of many classic works of fiction, and twice won the Governor General's Award.

Do not go gentle into that good night.
By Cipriano
This is essential CanLit 101.

Iconic!

For the longest time I have intended to read Margaret Laurence, and this is where I have started. I now know that I will continue on and read more of her work, especially the other Manawaka books in the series.

I think we are looking at some essential Canadian literature here, and yet, nearly every high school student from St John's to Victoria would rise up and say "What? Are you nuts?" As much as this book is inflicted upon the high-schoolers of Canada, it sure has not gained a welcome reception by that age group! For the Canadian teenager, seeing The Stone Angel on the English syllabus has become the equivalent of.... hmmm what would one say? Having a radio that is locked on the CBC station?

I believe this is because The Stone Angel is a book that is all about the "interior" and to truly love the book the reader must have an appreciation of the life processes involved in becoming an elderly person. From start to finish we are on the inside of this character Hagar Shipley. It is not the realm of the exciting pace and involved plotline. This book is rather a very somber, brooding, introspective look at a proud and uncompromising woman in her nineties. She is a woman who does not (in the slightest) want to succumb to the realities, adjustments, and inconveniences of aging and dying. As she faces the combined trauma of diminished health and loss of meaningful relationships, she has to come to terms with who she really is.

How far will her incessant pride and irritable crankiness get her in this last year of her life? How can she escape from those who try to make it all easier for her? Will she confess her unmitigated (and inevitable) need of others... of those who truly, and undauntingly, care for her well-being? Will she break down or remain haughty?

Laurence is simply brilliant in that she weaves a seamless web between the present and the past, between Hagar's current experience and her memories.

It is not easy, the transition[s] that we who will live on into old age will have to make if we are to succeed at being old. This book pulls no punches with how difficult the process can be, especially for the type "A" personality.

It is no accident that the book begins with the lines from Dylan Thomas:

Do not go gentle into that good night.

Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

It is a story about a woman who raged. And yet (in my opinion)there is not one real angry tirade in it! It is (I think) a different sort of "raging" that is being dealt with here in the story, as with the poem by Thomas. It is not the kind of raging that is with gritted teeth and defiance, [denial] it is the kind of raging that is mingled with profound sadness and regret... yes, anger too I suppose, but anger only because one has to leave behind so much of what one loves.

Here is the realistic journey of a woman who has to come to terms with the fact that "what's going to happen can't be delayed indefinitely."

I think the book is somewhat of a masterpiece. Voraciously, I read it.

I found this to be a totally engrossing, believable tale
By Kcorn
As you can probably tell by some of the other reviews, this book will NOT be for everyone. If you're looking for a quick escape, lots of action or a strong romance, this is not the book you want. However, if you enjoy books that aren't your usual fare and are strong on psychological tension, this is an excellent choice. I absolutely loved this story of an elderly woman, a rather judgmental, cantankerous person. I like novels that show how a person grows and changes and I find slow change to be most believable and true to life, as it is in this book. Many readers may have found Hagar Shipley's life to be rather mundane, even dull. But I didn't - her marriage to a man she eventually saw as inferior and coarse, her relationship with her children, her desire to make a proper home and better herself - were all quite realistic to me. As she becomes increasingly frail and dependent on her son and daughter-in-law, she also comes to see her life in a different way. I won't reveal more but I do urge you to read this one and stick with it. Odds are, you'll want to read more by the gifted author, Margaret Laurence.

Nationalism, Religion, and Ethics, by Gregory Baum

In beautifully simple language, Gregory Baum discusses the writings of four men whose nationalism was shaped by their religion and their time: Martin Buber's speeches on Zionism before the creation of Israel; Mahatma Gandhi's influential incitement to peaceful resistance against British imperialism; Paul Tillich's book on socialism and nationalism which was banned by the Nazis; and Jacques Grand'Maison's defence of Québécois nationalism in the wake of the province's Quiet Revolution. Baum also examines nationalism in a world dominated by transnational corporations and economic globalization: for example, how does Scottish nationalism fit within the European Union, and how can the Church of Scotland contribute to this secular movement? Finally, Baum turns to Quebec and its tension between ethnic and civil nationalism. As a province with a homogenous and distinctive culture that is different from that of the country surrounding it, how can Quebec guarantee its own survival in an ethically acceptable way? This quiet masterpiece of clear thinking and humane reasoning illuminates the uses and misdirections of one of the most powerful forces in politics and society.

Alice Munro: Writing Her Lives, by Robert Thacker

This is the book about one of the world’s great authors, Alice Munro, which shows how her life and her stories intertwine.

For almost thirty years Robert Thacker has been researching this book, steeping himself in Alice Munro’s life and work, working with her co-operation to make it complete. The result is a feast of information for Alice Munro’s admirers everywhere.

By following “the parallel tracks” of Alice Munro’s life and Alice Munro’s texts, he gives a thorough and revealing account of both her life and work. “There is always a starting point in reality,” she once said of her stories, and this book reveals just how often her stories spring from her life.

The book is chronological, starting with her pioneer ancestors, but with special attention paid to her parents and to her early days growing up poor in Wingham. Then all of her life stages — the marriage to Jim Munro, the move to Vancouver, then to Victoria to start the bookstore, the three daughters, the divorce, the return to Huron County, and the new life with Gerry Fremlin — leading to the triumphs as, story by story, book by book, she gains fame around the world, until rumours of a Nobel Prize circulate . . .

About the Author
Robert Thacker wrote his M.A. thesis at Waterloo on Alice Munro way back in 1976. Now the professor of Canadian Studies and English at St. Lawrence University, he was for many years the editor of The American Review of Canadian Studies, and is recognized as the academic authority on Alice Munro.

Recalling her university years, Munro says that she loved her time there, “being in that atmosphere, having all those books, not having to do any housework. Those are the only two years of my life without housework.” Not that she has greatly minded such work, either before university or after, but those two years at Western stand singular in her memory: “to have that concentration of your life, that something else was the thing you got up in the morning to do, and it was all reading and writing, studying.” Munro enrolled initially in the journalism program as something of a cover, so that she would not have to say that she wrote fiction — though, given the contributor note in the April 1950 Folio that has her major as Honours English “with an emphasis on creative writing,” it was not much of a cover. The journalism program required English, and that first year Munro also took English history (which she says she already knew backwards), economics, French conversation, and psychology. Those enrolled in programs like journalism — that is, with some sort of applied focus — were put in the same sections of these courses and were seated alphabetically. Thus Alice Laidlaw met Diane Lane — a first-year pre-business student from Amherstburg — who became a friend and roommate.

Both students had come from small towns, neither had much money (though Laidlaw was the more strapped), and each, initially, roomed with someone she knew from home. During that first year, each found that she was not enjoying the association with her original roommate. So the two took to spending time together at the public library, where Munro had a part-time job two or three afternoons a week sorting and reshelving books (as she also did at the Lawson library on campus on Saturday afternoons). Eventually, Munro moved into the same rooming house as Lane — the upstairs of a house belonging to Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Buck at 1081 Richmond Street — where she lived through her second year. Mr. Buck’s brother Tim was the leader of the Communist Party of Canada and had been in jail. The Bucks “rented the entire upstairs of their house, and it was a place where vaguely intellectual non-sorority-type girls lived.” Munro recalls that “we were all fairly poor, and we all cooked these messes we made on hotplates.” Socially, at the time, she remembers, “Western was fraternity, sorority. Not too serious.” That second year was “interesting, but fun, because I was then with people at University who were more or less like me.” Munro captures some of this in an unpublished draft story called “The Art of Fiction,” which draws on her time at Western. The narrator writes, “During my university years I lived in a house which was not really very big and which sheltered seven other girls, a landlady who wove her own skirts and belonged to a Bell Ringers Society, and a periodically confined lovesick Siamese cat.”

During their first year, both young women took the same English 20 — a survey of British literature — class from Robert Lawrence and, through him, they came to the attention of the English department. Just as in high school, Munro made her mark by what she wrote: as a student she did not have much to say in class, but Lawrence read “The Dimensions of a Shadow,” a story she wrote that became her first publication. The English department was seeking students for its honours program, and both Laidlaw and Lane were successfully recruited. Munro recalls that some time during that first year she was approached by Professor Murdo MacKinnon about switching to English. By that time, she remembers, she had “run afoul of economics” so she asked him if she would have to take more economics. No, he replied, she would need only to pick up the Latin she had missed that first year. So she shifted to English for her second year. That year she took aesthetics from Carl Klinck, eighteenth-century British literature from Brandon Conron, a course in drama from Eric Atkinson (“the best course I took”), French poetry, Greek literature and translation, and another course in English history “from a dreadful man” who “read from notes.” Although Munro says she spent about half of her time at Western writing, she did very well in her courses — apart from economics. At the end of her second year, she won a prize for the highest marks in English.

During her first year at Western, Alice Laidlaw was sitting across from another student in the Lawson library. He was eating some candy, a piece of which he accidentally dropped on the floor. This young man had had his eye on Laidlaw and, looking at the candy on the floor as he was wondering what to do, he heard her say, “I’ll eat it.” Thus Alice Ann Laidlaw met James Armstrong Munro. Jim Munro was from Oakville, the eldest son of Arthur Melville Munro, a senior accountant at the Timothy Eaton company in Toronto, and his wife, Margaret Armstrong Munro. Just under two years older than Alice, Jim was in his second year studying Honours History when he met her. Growing up in Oakville and through high school, he was interested in the arts; he listened to opera and classical music, took art classes, and acted in plays. Jim had seen Alice around the university and had noticed her, but did not know anything about her; he did not know that she was a writer until, when he asked around about her, he was told that Alice Laidlaw “was Folio’s new find.” Recalling himself then, Jim Munro says he was “full of poetry and romantic notions” — he remembers then being under the influence of a book, The Broad Highway by Jeffrey Farnol, about a young man who falls for a high-spirited girl. He mirrored the story when he met Alice Laidlaw — “I really fell hard for her.”

Describing Alice Laidlaw when she was a student at Western, Doug Spettigue, a classmate, recalls that “she was shy and small and had a very white face, freckle-sprinkled, and chestnut hair. . . . You thought you could stare right through those quiet eyes and the girl would disappear. But she didn’t. There was an unexpected strength there, and even then a confidence that some of the rest of us, noisier, may have envied.”

I was a little disappointed
By Reader in NYC
As the previous reviewer points out, the treatment of Munro's life here is shallow. But I think the point of a biography is to reveal something about the real life of the public figure. There is nothing intimate or even especially human about this book. The better part of it seems devoted to recording all the praise Munro has ever received by editors, reviewers, etc. No one would buy a $40, 616-page book about Alice Munro if not already convinced that she is an extraordinary writer. I didn't feel I needed to read every scrap of adulation ever accorded to her. I wanted details about her life, her writing process, maybe an in-depth discussion of different stories. She's written tirelessly about adultery, tortured love affairs, estranged daughters. I was hoping for something specific or in-depth about how these themes have informed her own life. Again, that doesn't seem unreasonable for a biography. I'm not saying Thacker was wrong to resist visiting these places, especially as he is so star-struck and respectful of his still-living subject. But I am saying that this book was just too safe and careful to be interesting.

For the already interested
By Lawrence Siskind
Fascinating for the already initiated, for awhile. It includes as much as you're likely to want to know about the background and details of Munro's actual life, personality and her relationship to her work. You're not likely to enjoy the numerous passages reviewing her reviews of the books of stories you better have already read if you're going to bother with this tome.

Thacker's artistry
By Ulrica Hume
It's true that there's nothing salacious about this book. Also that, at 600+ pages, it's the weight of a brick. Yet I obsessively read it. Robert Thacker writes well. I found myself wondering who he is. I know that he has "followed" Alice Munro for thirty-five years, because it says so in his bio. It's strange to devout one's life to gathering the (often dry) details of another's, but he has done just that. Thank God he doesn't attempt to explain her stories, rather he fixes them (sometimes ploddingly) to her past. If you can get through Part One: Ancestors, Parents, Home, you'll likely feel quite dizzy as a result. Learning the branches of her family tree is both fascinating and tiresome.

That said, this scholarly work is something I cherish for the perspective it does give. It tells no more than I need to know, for to know too much might destroy the mystery. It tells enough. We learn that Alice Munro struggled, paid attention, was reasonably kind, and that throughout she was true to herself. Oh, and she wrote, since of course that is what a writer does. I don't know if she ever made grape jelly, nor do I particularly want to.

The stunning bestseller from Quebec, coming in English in May. Over 138,000 French-language copies sold!

Within this book is the perfect recipe for success: An author who is one of the world’s foremost experts in the groundbreaking area of how food chemistry can fight cancer. A highly accessible and practical text. A beautifully designed package accompanied by full-colour illustrations.

According to the Canadian Cancer Society, an estimated 149,000 new cases of cancer occurred in Canada in 2005. While this statistic is alarming, current research is showing convincingly that elements in particular foods may significantly reduce the risk of cancer in healthy individuals and slow its progress in those already suffering from the disease. We can help ourselves and our families through healthy eating. But the information coming through the popular media is confusing and often hard to understand. Just what should we be eating and in what combinations? Do all cancer-fighting foods work the same way? Do they all fight all kinds of cancers?

In Foods That Fight Cancer, leading biochemist Richard Béliveau teams up with Denis Gingras to describe the science of food and which properties of particular foods are the active cancer-fighting elements. They deftly explain how different foods work to protect the body against different cancers and show which foods will be most effective. By understanding the science behind these therapeutic benefits, we come to realize not only why it is so critical to add these foods to our diet, but how easily it can be done.

Cancer prevention facts to add to your diet

-Approximately one third of all cancers are directly related to diet.

-A diet containing three or four weekly servings of broccoli, nothing too excessive, was shown to be sufficient to protect individuals from colon polyps.

-Cruciferous vegetables (brussel sprouts, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, kale) should be lightly cooked and thoroughly chewed when eaten in order to fully benefit from their anti-cancer potential. Chewing releases the active molecules.

-Freshly crushed garlic is by far the best source of anti-cancer compounds and should be preferred over supplements.

-The key to benefiting from the anti-cancer effects of soy lies in consuming about 50 grams per day of the whole food, such as raw (edamame) or dry roasted soybeans. Supplements containing isoflavones are not an acceptable alternative to the whole food and should be avoided.

-Colon cancer appears to be one of the cancers on which curcumin may have the greatest positive impact. The daily addition of a teaspoon of turmeric to soups, salad dressings, or pasta dishes is a simple way of providing curcumin intake sufficient to prevent the development if cancer.

-Green Tea contains large amounts of catechins, compounds that boast many anti-cancer properties. To maximize the preventative effects afforded by tea, select Japanese green teas, allow for an eight-to-ten minute brewing period and always drink freshly brewed tea, and avoiding Thermoses.

-Eating cranberries should be preferred over drinking cranberry juice.

-The best way to increase omega-3 levels in diet is to eat fatty fish (wild salmon, sardines, and mackerel) once or twice a week or add one tablespoon of freshly-milled flax seeds to your breakfast cereal.

-Eating two tomato sauce-based meals per week may lower your risk of developing prostate cancer by up to 25%.

-Citrus fruits are essential foods in cancer prevention: for their capacity to act directly on cancerous cells as well as their potential for enhancing the anti-cancer effects of other phytochemical compounds present in diet.

-The resveratrol present in red wine possesses powerful anti-cancer activity which may be responsible for the beneficial effects of wine on the prevention of certain cancers. Grape juice and cranberry juice contains resveratrol but at levels ten times less than red wine.

-The daily consumption of 40 grams of dark chocolate (chocolate containing 70% cocoa mass) may have definite health benefits and should replace or reduce that of sugar- and fat-filled candies with no phytochemical content.

-Many herbs and spices used as seasonings, in particular ginger contain large quantities of molecules that act as anti-inflammatory compounds, which also reduce the risks of developing certain chronic diseases.

-Instead of replacing butter with margarine, use olive oil as much as possible as a source of dietary fat; you will benefit from its healthful lipids knowing that it also possesses anti-cancer properties of its own.

A must read for anyone who wants to enjoy good food and good health
By McB
A very easy to read but fascinating explanation of the biochemistry of cancer cells and how naturally occurring chemicals in certain foods can alter the chemical environment in the body to inhibit the various stages of cancer cell growth. Amazingly the action of these natural chemicals is doing what powerful man-made chemotherapy is doing, but without the collateral damage. By including some of the basic ingredients in your diet, you can signficantly help decrease the risk of cancerous cell growth in the body. The book provides some very thought provoking statistics on what are the real causes of cancer as opposed to many of the popular myths that people worry about so unnecessarily. It also makes these essential foods sound delicious and fun. No recipes but that's up to you!!! An essential read from the modern foodie!!

A Must-Read Book!
By Tango
This is a life-altering book. Anyone interested in improving their health needs to read it! It's a little technical, but in an era of "quick fixes" and crazy fad-diets, I found it refreshing to read a book based on extensive research and empirical scientific data. Most encouraging is that the foods that have been shown to be so helpful to improving our ability to defend against cancer, are good too - berries, tomatoes, cabbage & citrus fruits to name a few. Read this book - your health and the health of our nation will improve as a result!

Things you should know
By David Boothman
I read quite widely but this easy-to-read book has a large amount of information I had not come accross before. Its focus is to give you information that helps you to understand cancer so you can take steps to place yourself at lower risk for cancer. We all know about not smoking but there is lots more you can do. It is especially credible since its written by eminent cancer researchers who head up cancer research labs.
