Do yourself a favour and find this treasure!
By Mike Stone
I am shocked that this, my favourite book from my teenage years, is consistently out-of-stock! Quarrington being a Canadian author, I sometimes find the book hidden in the stacks at various Toronto stores. But that does nothing for the vast American audience who would do well to read a fictional chronicle of their national pastime. See this review as the first step on my personal crusade to revive the life of this great book.
Early in my teens, baseball was my religion. I memorized statistics, and read up feverishly on the history of the game. When given to me as a gift before the summer of my thirteenth year, I was excited about beginning Home Game. It exceeded all of my expectations! The baseball scenes were magnificent, but the characters and the story still managed to overshadow even that.
Nathanael "Crybaby" Isbister is a good focal point. He was a great baseballer, whose major league career was curiously brief. His mysterious past is slowly revealed, and always provides wonderful revelation about his character. He is found wandering in the Michigan countryside, when he happens upon a troupe of carnival freaks. They are under constant scrutiny from a religious sect called the House of Jonah, whose baseball playing is legendary, and whose leader, Tekel Ambrose, is neck and neck with Isbister for the title of the greatest ballplayer ever to lace up spikes. Through a serious of wonderfully convoluted circumstances, The House of Jonah challenges the freaks to a baseball game, with the loser to leave town.
The carnival freaks are a beautifully eclectic and wonderfully drawn cast of outcasts. Dr. Sinister, their leader, speaks in an English so byzantine that no one can understand him. Major Mite is the shortest man in the world, and also the most belligerent. Angus MacCallister is the strongest man in the world, with passions run deeper than the Grand Canyon. There's the Hisslop sisters, Siamese twins and second basewomen. Davey Goliath, the tallest man in the world, but so full of paranoia that his every move is haunted. Stella, the fattest woman in the world, and surprise love interest. And Zap (a.k.a. the Wild Man From Borneo), who is the focal point of one of the greatest plot twists I've ever come across. Each character is given a detailed personal history so carefully constructed that you really feel like these people are alive and walking around.
The story moves along with great momentum, constantly being pushed forward by a plot that is logically structured toward one defining moment. I especially liked the framing device he uses (the author's grandfather has returned from exile, to bully him into writing the story of The Game). Nothing like a hearty dose of meta-fiction to brighten your day.
The game itself is achieved with a perfect balance of comedy and drama, suspense and light-heartedness. After coming to its conclusion, I went back to read it again. It was only then that I realized that every at bat is presented... in detail! This is an amazing achievement when you realize that Quarrington never repeats himself. Each at bat is interesting in itself.
I've re-read this book several times over the years. It is still a comic tour de force, and emotional treasure. And even though it can never recapture the excitement of that very first read, I still marvel at this wonderful, little story.

A decent book
By Bob Johnson
Paul is a funny guy. I was surprised by how funny the novel was. I'd recommend it to any baseball fan. As for content, Home Game is filled with humour and subtle freak humour. Nathaniel Isbister eventually transforms into a freak himself and lives with other freaks. In the event that Nate had felt accepted in his previous normal life, the freaks would have no place at all in Home Game. I don't know what to make of the crazy freak related events of Home Game. Paul didn't seem to present any reasons as to the freaks. Nate could have easily just wandered upon some sort of jugglers or something. Good book, though. You probably won't think much of it if you don't like baseball.

Clever and compassionate.
By A Customer
If readers will allow an author of Quarrington's calibre some lattitude, they'll be in for a great time. This is a wonderful book that moulds freakish absurdity into humanity, an approach that reverses the course of today's trendy writers. Along the way, Quarrington teaches us something about people and the poetry of baseball. Quarrington is refreshing. I wish he'd write more. I lost my only copy of this book and have been looking to replace it since.

Pseudo-Martyr was Donne's first published work and the only one he wrote as a lawyer. It is also an autobiographical document which reveals how Donne resolved his own lapse from Catholicism so that he could remain loyal to the king. A descendant of Thomas More's sister, Donne had inherited a rich tradition from the Counter-Reformation, which he sought to reconcile with the political absolutes of his day. Anthony Raspa provides a definitive critical edition of this long-neglected work, setting it in its historical context and making the forest of quotations and references given by Donne in the main body of the text and its margins intelligible to the modern reader.

The Wet and the Dry: A Drinker's Journey, by Lawrence Osborne

Selected as a Top Ten Book of the Year by Dwight Garner, New York Times

A “fearlessly honest account” (Financial Times) of man’s love of drink, and an insightful meditation on the meaning of alcohol consumption across cultures worldwide

Drinking alcohol: a beloved tradition, a dangerous addiction, even “a sickness of the soul” (as once described by a group of young Muslim men in Bali). In his wide-ranging travels, Lawrence Osborne—a veritable connoisseur himself—has witnessed opposing views of alcohol across cultures worldwide, compelling him to wonder: is drinking alcohol a sign of civilization and sanity, or the very reverse? Where do societies fall on the spectrum between indulgence and restraint?

An immersing, controversial, and often irreverent travel narrative, The Wet and the Dry offers provocative, sometimes unsettling insights into the deeply embedded conflicts between East and West, and the surprising influence of drinking on the contemporary world today.

Review
A NEW YORK TIMES 2013 TOP TEN BOOK OF THE YEAR

“Instantly among the best nonfiction volumes about drinking that we have...Mr. Osborne comes across in The Wet and the Dry as a real human being indeed—a complicated man mixing complicated feelings into fizzy, adult, intoxicating prose.”
—New York Times

“In this entertaining travel essay/memoir, [Osborne] combines both of his loves with a combination of sparkling prose and insightful observations...Endlessly fascinating.”
—Chicago Tribune

“Mr. Osborne is a superb travel writer, one who, like Evelyn Waugh, can size up a locale at almost a glance. This intoxicating book has political as well as sensual overtones. It’s about how East and West think about alcohol; quite often it’s about one man’s search for his 6:10 p.m. martini in some very unlikely locations.” —Dwight Garner, New York Times

“A bracing, brilliant meditation on everything from the universal qualities that make a good bar to the mysteries of vodka…to the pagan worship of Dionysius, an influence still felt in the way we see wine… Relentlessly sharp-minded.” —Boston Globe

“Delightfully idiosyncratic.”—LA Times

“Entertaining…[Osborne] nimbly parses politics, religion, and the chaotic nature of history itself in relation to drink.” —Men’s Journal, a Best Books for Men 2013 selection

“Osborne is a master of the high style.” —The Guardian (UK)

“Captivating...Stylish and engaging.” —Financial Times (UK)

“Osborne elicits some profound and harrowing reflections...From Dubai to Beirut, Islamabad to Brooklyn, Osborne’s meditations on fermentation and distillation induce a host of refreshing, taut, timeless unmoorings.” —Publishers Weekly (starred review)

“A cosmopolitan and prodigious drinker conducts a tour to selected locales where alcohol flows easily and to others where such spirits are strictly forbidden...Rakish, rich and nicely served.” —Kirkus

In defense of drink.
By Vital Spark
Lawrence Osborne is erudite, a fine writer, and an alcoholic, capable of writing sentences that make the reader stop to reread and admire. One example, the first taste of a gin and tonic:"The drink comes with a dim music of ice cubes and a perfume that touches the nose like a smell of warmed grass. Ease returns. It is like cold steel in liquid form." He loves drinking, by himself, in a good bar, or enjoying the comradeship of jolly companions. In defense of alcohol, he traces its ancient history and the idea of new life springing from decay through the process of fermentation. He is aware of the damage that alcohol causes and seems to feel the benefit of enforced periods of abstinence. In fact, when he is asked why he is visiting Muslim countries where drinking is prohibited, he replies that he wants to "dry out." He goes back to drinking as soon as he can, but there is a hint of regret about it: " I sank the vodka into my throat and sang a silent hallelujah....And yet there was a thread of sadness in this return , a nostalgia. That word in Greek simply means, the pain of returning."

So, why does he keep drinking? He drinks because it is part of him, because he likes it, and because he has the freedom to do it. Will he quit? He has no desire or intention to do so. He ends the book by describing how he feels in the morning when he wakes, anticipating his next drink and his own demise: " I was alone ... waiting for a clock somewhere to strike six yet again, as it would every day until the final call of all."

a love letter to all things related to drink
By S.E. Poza
This book was not quite what I expected from the description I initially read. That description emphasized the sociological and self-reflection aspects of the content, not the travel diary aspect. This is much more a loving caress of alcohol of all sorts as it is consumed worldwide. Though there are reflections on various cultures and how they regard drink, as well as a clear acknowledgement of the author's status as someone who can't stop drinking (with a clear tone, but lack of overt expression of self-loathing at various points - he uses societal condemnation of drinkers to convey this), it's more a verbal caress of his appreciation of wine, beer, and spirits. It's a Valentine to the places and types of drink with a lot of interesting information about the place of alcohol in several cultures.

Ultimately, I think this is the type of book best appreciated by people who also fancy themselves connoisseurs of alcohol and have empathy for his fervent attachment to it. While Lawrence Osbourne has lovely prose and is a very educated, sophisticated and experienced writer, I am simply not the right type of reader for this particular book.

Erudite. Intelligent. Remotely irreverant. Even profound.
By T.M. Reader
This book is a sort of travelogue . . . from Europe, lingering in the Middle East, reaching into the Far East. All strangely woven together within the fabric of; the production, consumption, and subsequent metabolization/digestion of alcoholic beverage.

Strange theme. What I found even stranger is the nature of the author - a paradox of dissipation and, often, sublime prose and insight. Intelligent, well traveled, articulate, alcoholic. And unashamedly so. The book is not a "downer". It's entertaining and intelligent, and gives frequent pause for rereading and moments of contemplation.

Some of the Muslim nations traveled by author Lawrence Osborne are dry (no alcohol) countries. Osborne celebrates the value of true sobriety and embraces the clarity. He also embraces the inevitable next drink as heartily.

At times during this read, one considers becoming a teetotaler - at other times one heads for the kitchen to make and savor a drink, returning to the easy-chair and the book.

Hangovers, blackouts, alcohol-nirvana, enhanced social intercourse, social disasters -- all there and stunningly honest. The only thing missing, I think, is that although Osborne does speak to issues regarding the underbelly of alcohol and alcoholism in society, mere writing just cannot accurately or adequately describe the tragedies of alcohol many of us have been eyewitness to - real careers and real families ruined, grand property damage, spouse abuse, child sex abuse. Right?

Some other reviewers have suggested that this book is merely an entertainment and really has no elevating value. I disagree. I think it is a thought-provoking work, prompting much self-examination, and worthy of reading by any drinker.

Ideal for objectively developing self-discipline
By Lisa Ditto Reiner
After attending a workshop presented by Jane Nelson, I was completely sold on the beauty, respect, and effectiveness of this approach. I have implemented this for years I my school and, more recently, in my home with my own children. It is such a simple, sensible, and effective approach!

This book has singlehandedly reduced my stress and increased my effectiveness as a teacher!
By Southern Gal 2014
I bought this book before I started teaching and now that I'm 2 months in (and currently reading the book) I have to say that my current/future success is tied directly to this book and it's model. As a first year teacher it's very easy to lose sight of why you decided to teach, what your students are going through and (most importantly) the reasons why students act the way they do.

This book not only offers insight into what motivates student behavior; it gives you practical things you can do to turn around these behaviors. I'm not exaggerating when I say that the strategies in this book has not only made me a happier teacher, but a more effective one. It's very easy to take the wrong road, but with this book I don't feel that I can go astray.

I have two copies of this book; one for use in school and one for home.

I HIGHLY recommend this book!

A Sense of Their Duty: Middle-Class Formation in Victorian Ontario Towns, by Andrew Holman

What did it mean to be middle class in late nineteenth-century Ontario? How did the members of the middle class define themselves? Though simple, these questions have escaped the attention of social historians in recent writing about Canada. The Victorian middle class, referred to as the backbone of economic change, the motor of political reform, and the source of one set of moral standards, has eluded systematic study. A Sense of Their Duty corrects this and reconstructs the identities that middle-class Victorians made for themselves in an era of economic change.

A Postmodern Analysis of the Little Red Riding Hood Tale, by Barbara Smith Chalou

Dr. Chalou's study is a qualitative critical analysis of the Little Red Riding Hood tale, from its oral beginnings to the latest contemporary retellings of the 1990's, examining the protagonist's depiction through both text and illustration. The retellings span six decades and are separated into three distinct categories to correspond with particular intellectual movements to which they conform; Traditional, Modern, and Postmodern. One resource to which children might look for role models is in the available literature. Stereotypically sexist depictions of girls and women in literature may serve not only to reinforce sexist attitudes in society, but also to impact the psychological development of females. Little Red Riding Hood is a classic example of a stereotypically sexist depiction of the protagonist, whose traditional portrayal ranges from polite and naive, to carnal and seductive. This study is a qualitative critical analysis of the Little Red Riding Hood tale, from its oral beginnings to the latest contemporary retellings of the 1990's, examining the protagonist's depiction through both text and illustration. The retellings span six decades and are separated into three distinct categories to correspond with particular intellectual movements to which they conform; Traditional, Modern, and Postmodern. Books which fall into the Traditional category typically have an innocence about them and are written in sugary language. The Modern retellings attempt to break with the traditional versions by updating the story, but the changes are usually superficial ones. The books in the Postmodern category are retellings that make more meaningful changes to the tale by addressing the political implications of the story, taking a critical look at the protagonist's portrayal. This study examines how Little Red Riding Hood's image has changed over time, rather than asking if she has changed. Change is inevitable and not always a forward progression. Change can be a step backward and serve to reaffirm, rather than to dispel sexist stereotypes. When superficial changes to the story are made, depicting the protagonist in contemporary clothing for example, with no regard to her thoughts and actions, the reader receives a mixed message.

World War Z (Mass Market Movie Tie-In Edition): An Oral History of the Zombie War, by Max Brooks

Now a major motion picture

The Zombie War came unthinkably close to eradicating humanity. Max Brooks, driven by the urgency of preserving the acid-etched first-hand experiences of the survivors from those apocalyptic years, traveled across the United States of America and throughout the world, from decimated cities that once teemed with upwards of thirty million souls to the most remote and inhospitable areas of the planet. He recorded the testimony of men, women, and sometimes children who came face-to-face with the living, or at least the undead, hell of that dreadful time. World War Z is the result. Never before have we had access to a document that so powerfully conveys the depth of fear and horror, and also the ineradicable spirit of resistance, that gripped human society through the plague years.

Ranging from the now infamous village of New Dachang in the United Federation of China, where the epidemiological trail began with the twelve-year-old Patient Zero, to the unnamed northern forests where untold numbers sought a terrible and temporary refuge in the cold, to the United States of Southern Africa, where the Redeker Plan provided hope for humanity at an unspeakable price, to the west-of-the-Rockies redoubt where the North American tide finally started to turn, this invaluable chronicle reflects the full scope and duration of the Zombie War.

Most of all, the book captures with haunting immediacy the human dimension of this epochal event. Facing the often raw and vivid nature of these personal accounts requires a degree of courage on the part of the reader, but the effort is invaluable because, as Mr. Brooks says in his introduction, “By excluding the human factor, aren’t we risking the kind of personal detachment from history that may, heaven forbid, lead us one day to repeat it? And in the end, isn’t the human factor the only true difference between us and the enemy we now refer to as ‘the living dead’?”

Note: Some of the numerical and factual material contained in this edition was previously published under the auspices of the United Nations Postwar Commission.

Eyewitness reports from the first truly global war

“I found ‘Patient Zero’ behind the locked door of an abandoned apartment across town. . . . His wrists and feet were bound with plastic packing twine. Although he’d rubbed off the skin around his bonds, there was no blood. There was also no blood on his other wounds. . . . He was writhing like an animal; a gag muffled his growls. At first the villagers tried to hold me back. They warned me not to touch him, that he was ‘cursed.’ I shrugged them off and reached for my mask and gloves. The boy’s skin was . . . cold and gray . . . I could find neither his heartbeat nor his pulse.” —Dr. Kwang Jingshu, Greater Chongqing, United Federation of China

“‘Shock and Awe’? Perfect name. . . . But what if the enemy can’t be shocked and awed? Not just won’t, but biologically can’t! That’s what happened that day outside New York City, that’s the failure that almost lost us the whole damn war. The fact that we couldn’t shock and awe Zack boomeranged right back in our faces and actually allowed Zack to shock and awe us! They’re not afraid! No matter what we do, no matter how many we kill, they will never, ever be afraid!” —Todd Wainio, former U.S. Army infantryman and veteran of the Battle of Yonkers

“Two hundred million zombies. Who can even visualize that type of number, let alone combat it? . . . For the first time in history, we faced an enemy that was actively waging total war. They had no limits of endurance. They would never negotiate, never surrender. They would fight until t

From Publishers Weekly
Brooks, the author of the determinedly straight-faced parody The Zombie Survival Guide (2003), returns in all seriousness to the zombie theme for his second outing, a future history in the style of Theodore Judson's Fitzpatrick's War. Brooks tells the story of the world's desperate battle against the zombie threat with a series of first-person accounts "as told to the author" by various characters around the world. A Chinese doctor encounters one of the earliest zombie cases at a time when the Chinese government is ruthlessly suppressing any information about the outbreak that will soon spread across the globe. The tale then follows the outbreak via testimony of smugglers, intelligence officials, military personnel and many others who struggle to defeat the zombie menace. Despite its implausible premise and choppy delivery, the novel is surprisingly hard to put down. The subtle, and not so subtle, jabs at various contemporary politicians and policies are an added bonus. (Sept.)

From Booklist
"The Crisis" nearly wiped out humanity. Brooks (son of Mel Brooks and author of The Zombie Survival Guide, 2003) has taken it upon himself to document the "first hand" experiences and testimonies of those lucky to survive 10 years after the fictitious zombie war. Like a horror fan's version of Studs Terkel's The Good War (1984), the "historical account" format gives Brooks room to explore the zombie plague from numerous different views and characters. In a deadpan voice, Brooks exhaustively details zombie incidents from isolated attacks to full-scale military combat: "what if the enemy can't be shocked and awed? Not just won't, but biologically can't!" With the exception of a weak BAT-21 story in the second act, the "interviews" and personal accounts capture the universal fear of the collapse of society--a living nightmare in which anyone can become a mindless, insatiable predator at a moment's notice. Alas, Brad Pitt's production company has purchased the film rights to the book--while it does have a chronological element, it's more similar to a collection of short stories: it would make for an excellent 24-style TV series or an animated serial. Regardless, horror fans won't be disappointed: like George Romero's Dead trilogy, World War Z is another milestone in the zombie mythos. Carlos Orellana

Review
“An ‘oral history’ of the global war the evil brain-chewers came within a hair of winning. Zombies are among us—turn on your television if you don’t believe it. But, Brooks reassures us, even today, human fighters are hunting down the leftovers, and we’re winning. [His] iron-jaw narrative is studded with practical advice on what to do when the zombies come, as they surely will. A literate, ironic, strangely tasty treat.”
—Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

“Max Brooks has charted the folly of a disaster response based solely on advanced technologies and brute force in this step-by-step guide to what happened in the Zombie War. He details with extraordinary insight how in the face of institutional missteps and greed, people in unexpected ways achieve unique, creative, and effective strategies to survive and fight back. Brooks’s account of the path to recovery and reconstruction after the war is fascinating, too. World War Z provides us with a starting point, at least, a basic blueprint from which to build a popular understanding of how, when, and why such a disaster came to be, and how small groups and individuals survived.”
—Jeb Weisman, Ph.D.,Director of Strategic Technologies, National Center for Disaster Preparedness

“Possesses more creativity and zip than entire crates of other new fiction titles. Think Mad Max meets The Hot Zone . . . It’s Apocalypse Now, pandemic-style. Creepy but fascinating.”
—USA TODAY

“Prepare to be entranced by this addictively readable oral history of the great war between humans and zombies. . . . Will grab you as tightly as a dead man’s fist. A.”
—Entertainment Weekly, EW Pick

“Probably the most topical and literate scare since Orson Welles' War of the Worlds radio broadcast. . . . This is action-packed social-political satire with a global view.”
—Dallas Morning News

“Brooks [is] America’s most prominent maven on the living dead. . . . Chilling. . . . It is gripping reading and a scathing indictment of weak responses to crises real and over-hyped.”
—Hartford Courant

“A sober, frequently horrifying and even moving account. . . . Brooks has delivered a full-blown horror novel, laced with sharp social and political observations and loads of macabre, gruesome imagery. . . . The real horror of World War Z comes from the all-too-plausible responses of human beings and governments to the menace.”
—Fangoria

“A horror fan’s version of Studs Terkel’s The Good War. . . . Like George Romero’s Dead trilogy, World War Z is another milestone in the zombie mythology.”
—Booklist

“Brooks commits to detail in a way that makes his nightmare world creepily plausible. . . . Far more affecting than anything involving zombies really has any right to be. . . . The book . . . opens in blood and guts, turns the world into an oversized version of hell, then ends with and affirmation of humanity’s ability to survive the worst the world has to offer. It feels like the right book for the right times, and that’s the eeriest detail of all.”
—A.V. Club, The Onion

“The best science fiction has traditionally been steeped in social commentary. World War Z continues that legacy. . . . We haven’t been this excited about a book without pictures since–well, since ever.”
—Metro

For the intelligent zombie fan
By Ariadne011
I got this book to prepare for an end-of-the-world class in my Mythology course, despite not being much of a zombie fan, but ended up loving it. This book is nothing at all like the movie, and that's a good thing. As others have commented, it's told as individual stories told years after the events, and the characterization, and the thought about military, medical, and social implications are all compelling. There is some unexpected interweaving of stories as well. The narrators are from different places, professions, perspectives, and lifestyles, and the zombies are more like the zombies we know and sorta love since Night of the Living Dead. Definitely for the intelligent zombie fans, in particular in offering strategic ideas to those who, like my daughter, keep plywood, hammer and nails handy in case it becomes necessary to board up our windows when the zombies come.

An Exceptional fictional read with new and interesting perspectives
By Mooty
An excellent book. The retelling of a war against "zombies" through the eyes of "witnesses" provided a new perspective that i have yet to find in any other novel. All details are well layed out, and the intertwining of information between different accounts provide secondary opinions and outlines how different cultures responded to the same threat in different ways. If you are hesitant to buy this book because you saw the movie and did not like it, do not be worried. The book, as is often the case, is much, much better that the movie, and the two do not even share common plots. Overall, the novel is an exceptional fictional read, combining interesting story-lines with intricate details in order to outline the struggle that humanity would face if "zombies" really did exist.

Like a Z war documentary in print; NOTHING like the movie (thank heavens)
By Vertigo
First, do not judge this book by the movie. The only similarities between the movie and book are that they deal with a worldwide zombie apocalypse. That is IT.

Book covers the Z war from numerous perspectives, each a vignette of interviewer and interviewee. Because it's parsed out like this, the book never seems tedious or bland. It was easy to pick up, read a section or two, then put down for later. I loved it. Not a conventional approach; more like a documentary in print.

The author's imagination and the storyline's sheer scope of scenarios is impressive. It's like he brainstormed dozens of Z war roles (jobs, survivor stories, strategies, etc.) then drilled deep to uncover unique challenges that person would have had. Then he added distinct personalities to each, including language styles. Each character felt unique, although parsed approach (and most of it in the past tense, to boot) meant it was difficult to give the characters real depth, and impossible for me to develop real sympathy for them. I don't see those as minuses, just the natural consequence of this choice of writing style, so I give it 5/5.

Klondike: The Last Great Gold Rush, 1896-1899, by Pierre Berton

With the building of the railroad and the settlement of the plains, the North West was opening up. The Klondike stampede was a wild interlude in the epic story of western development, and here are its dramatic tales of hardship, heroism, and villainy. We meet Soapy Smith, dictator of Skagway; Swiftwater Bill Gates, who bathed in champagne; Silent Sam Bonnifield, who lost and won back a hotel in a poker game; and Roddy Connors, who danced away a fortune at a dollar a dance. We meet dance-hall queens, paupers turned millionaires, missionaries and entrepreneurs, and legendary Mounties such as Sam Steele, the Lion of the Yukon.

Pierre Berton's riveting account reveals to us the spectacle of the Chilkoot Pass, and the terrors of lesser-known trails through the swamps of British Columbia, across the glaciers of souther Alaska, and up the icy streams of the Mackenzie Mountains. It contrasts the lawless frontier life on the American side of the border to the relative safety of Dawson City. Winner of the Governor General's award for non-fiction, Klondike is authentic history and grand entertainment, and a must-read for anyone interested in the Canadian frontier.

Wild-West scholarship from a man who was (almost) there!
By bensmomma
This is the best-written, most entertaining history book I've read in ages. What an amazing story! In January 1897, a message went out from Dawson City in the isolated Yukon Territory of Canada: gold had been discovered! It took until July for anyone to notice, but then it seemed like the whole world stampeded toward the Klondike. Most did not make it over the mountains before winter, but were stuck in lawless Skagway, Alaska, enduring frostbite, graft, and privation, until arriving in Dawson in June of 1898. Suddenly, Dawson went from a few tents to as many as 10,000 people; then, in August of 1899, a rumor of gold in Nome, Alaska emptied the town as quickly as a fire: 8,000 people left in the course of a week.

Berton spins a mighty good yarn: careless prospectors paying for drinks with gold dust; dance-hall girls; wiley villains like the infamous Soapy Smith, boss of Skagway's underworld; heroic Mounties keeping order over treacherous mountain passes. All of this is the result of an enormous amount of primary research: in the 1950's Berton personally interviewed a large number of the last survivors of the stampede, and appears to have memorized every printed word, published and unpublished, ever written on the subject.

Berton caps off his expert handling of the narrative with a wonderful chapter reflecting on the meaning of the Klondike rush for the American and Canadian national characters. I was charmed to discover, at the very end, that Berton's parents were prospectors and that he himself grew up in Dawson, almost a ghost town, playing among the abandoned gold dredges and cast-off dance slippers.

This 2001 version of "Klondike" is significantly updated from the 1958 original; it's considerably longer and reflects many new primary sources. "Klondike Fever" still available via Amazon (ISBN 0786713178), is the older and less up-to-date book. This 2001 edition is the one you want!

Back in the days when Yukon Gold wasn't a potato
By Smallchief
For those of us whose knowledge of the Klondike Gold Rush comes mostly from the 1950s radio drama, "Sergeant Preston of the Yukon" this is a fine book to read. (Trivia question: What was the name of Sergeant Preston's preternaturally intelligent huskie?) This is a revised and updated version of the book "Klondike Fever" published in 1958. Read "Klondike" if possible, although the earlier "Klondike Fever" is still perfectly readable. The maps are much better in this edition.

This Gold Rush, named after the Klondike River in the Yukon territory of Canada, was the last great scramble for gold in the old West. One hundred thousand persons, mostly from the U.S., set out for the Klondike in 1897, 30,000 or 40,000 got there, after an arduous journey through killing winter snows, and a few hundred found gold. The stories of the long, hard journey into this Arctic wilderness are often horrific. In one party of 19 men, 15 died or were killed along the route and the other four had eyes damaged by snow blindness. The gold seekers included author Jack London, Wyatt Earp, and poet Joaquin Miller. By late-summer 1899, "one of the weirdest and most useless mass movements in history" was over. Most of the gold seekers went home to live normal lives, although a few moved on to the beaches of Nome, Alaska where gold could be picked up among the grains of sand.

The author tells a compelling tale of the men and women who participated in the Klondike Gold Rush. It was indeed a fever. The characters in this book include crusty old miners who suddenly became rich beyond their wildest dreams, stalwart, incorruptible Canadian Mounties, conmen like Soapy Smith -- who in the dramatic tradition of the West receives his just deserts -- prostitutes, madams, gamblers, angels of mercy, last-chance losers, rich adventurers, Indians, and missionaries. It's a fascinating read, based on research that included interviews with many of the oldtimers who lived to talk to the author in the 1950s. The author's standard of truth telling is high; he identifies a tall tale or an unlikely exaggeration when he finds them.

The text would be enhanced if there were photographs, but I doubt you'll find a better book about the Klondike Gold Rush. Oh, yes, Sergeant Preston's dog was named "Yukon King."

Vintage Berton!
By Barton Breen
As a Canadian living away from home, I never miss an opportunity to read a book by Pierre Berton. Berton had a talent for making History come alive in a way that is rare not only among Canadian authors, but indeed is rarely equaled and certainly not surpassed by any other author I have encountered abroad.

Klondike is one of those books that is so well constructed and written that you forget you are reading History and instead are absorbed into the story-line as if you were reading a first-rate novel. Burton develops the story-line and characters so that you are drawn into the history and come to appreciate the facts of the era and location. The people become real. You leave having experienced history instead of just having been served warmed over facts with a few theories as to how they tie together.

Despite the difference in genre, reading Burton's account of the Gold Rush in the North is every bit as entertaining as reading Farley Mowat or Jack London.

I recommend this book highly. It is a good introduction to Berton, to the Canadian North, the history of the Yukon, and a good primer before you launch into the other great books of Berton if you have never read him before!

Soldiers: German POWs on Fighting, Killing, and Dying, by Sonke Neitzel, Harald Welzer

On a visit to the British National Archive in 2001, Sonke Neitzel made a remarkable discovery: reams of meticulously transcribed conversations among German POWs that had been covertly recorded and recently declassified. Netizel would later find another collection of transcriptions, twice as extensive, in the National Archive in Washington. These were discoveries that would provide a unique and profoundly important window into the true mentality of the soldiers in the Wehrmacht, the Luftwaffe, the German navy, and the military in general -- almost all of whom had insisted on their own honourable behaviour during the war.
Collaborating with renowned social psychologist Harald Welzer, Neitzel examines these conversations -- and the casual, pitiless brutality omnipresent in them -- from a historical and psychological perspective, and in reconstucting the frameworks and situations behind these conversations, they have created a powerful narrative of wartime experience.
