A comprehensive guide to visual storytelling from Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), one of the world's leaders in sequential arts instruction. Whether you're a filmmaker, animator, ad director, writer, or video-game artist--storyboarding is a skill that is absolutely critical. Storyboarding Essentials covers everything students and working professionals need to master the art of writing and formatting scripts, creating frames, and following visual logic to create a cohesive narrative.

Regardless of genre or discipline, storyboards share a language that reflects the jargon and terminology employed by industries born out of the filmed visual narrative. They connect written word to final cut; they concern themselves with what the camera “sees” (framing height, camera angle, and movement); they use standard and recognized formats (aspect ratios); and they even employ similar organizational systems (numbering). While the cinematographer relies on instinct and experience, a good storyboard artist will develop a strong understanding of camera angles and framing heights to help the director achieve his or her vision.

Decent to start, useless for professionals
By BDeLoach
I have a hard time being a fan of this book. I've got a half dozen books on storyboarding and I've found this to be one of the weaker ones. It certainly is a solid overview of the topic but for any aspiring professional artists looking to really grow their skillset, it's very lacking. Also really bugs me that they use weak student school projects as examples of how to create a professional storyboard. Comes off as very silly to me to use a student's work to try teaching aspiring/seasoned professionals. Another thing is, when it goes over "artists materials" it doesn't even touch on digital tools. 80% of artists in the industry work exclusively on digital tablets and all it does is talk about pencils and markers. Really needs an update. I'm a professional story artist myself and I was hoping for a fresh perspective and to get some insight from some amazing veteran artists. Certainly not the case with this read.

Framed Ink has taught me immensely about visual storytelling, Mark Simon's book covers the business aspect of the trade quite well. Just think there are many better options out there.

Wish I had this book 30 years Ago
By J.Kennedy
Storyboarding is a must have skill today. This book is easy to understand and visually demonstrates the steps. Even if you are not an illustrator, and especially if you are not an illustrator, this book is invaluable. Whether producing a commercial or a short video, film or in house film. Just the logic and thought process, interpreting scripts and the planning skills you acquire are fantastic. Wish I had this book years ago.

This may sound like a minor complaint
By Bob Kronlge
I believe the second illustration of the "damsel" on page 100 is backwards! The text then goes on to boldly state that it does not violate the '180 degree rule', but it does! This may sound like a minor complaint, but if I hadn't studied film continuity 30 years ago in college, this error would have convinced me I wasn't understanding the concept. The woman appears to have turned around and is running TOWARDS THE CHAINSAW MURDERER! Two 'experts' wrote this book and neither one caught the error?

League of Denial: The NFL, Concussions, and the Battle for Truth, by Mark Fainaru-Wada, Steve Fainaru

“PROFESSIONAL FOOTBALL PLAYERS DO NOT SUSTAIN FREQUENT REPETITIVE BLOWS TO THE BRAIN ON A REGULAR BASIS.”
So concluded the National Football League in a December 2005 scientific paper on concussions in America’s most popular sport. That judgment, implausible even to a casual fan, also contradicted the opinion of a growing cadre of neuroscientists who worked in vain to convince the NFL that it was facing a deadly new scourge: A chronic brain disease that was driving an alarming number of players -- including some of the all-time greats -- to madness.
League of Denial reveals how the NFL, over a period of nearly two decades, sought to cover up and deny mounting evidence of the connection between football and brain damage.
Comprehensively, and for the first time, award-winning ESPN investigative reporters Mark Fainaru-Wada and Steve Fainaru tell the story of a public health crisis that emerged from the playing fields of our 21st century pastime. Everyone knew that football is violent and dangerous. But what the players who built the NFL into a $10 billion industry didn’t know – and what the league sought to shield from them – is that no amount of padding could protect the human brain from the force generated by modern football; that the very essence of the game could be exposing these players to brain damage.
In a fast-paced narrative that moves between the NFL trenches, America’s research labs and the boardrooms where the NFL went to war against science, League of Denial examines how the league used its power and resources to attack independent scientists and elevate its own flawed research -- a campaign with echoes of Big Tobacco’s fight to deny the connection between smoking and lung cancer. It chronicles the tragic fates of players like Hall of Fame Pittsburgh Steelers center Mike Webster, who was so disturbed at the time of his death he fantasized about shooting NFL executives; and former Chargers great Junior Seau, whose diseased brain became the target of an unseemly scientific battle between researchers and the NFL. Based on exclusive interviews, previously undisclosed documents and private emails, this is the story of what the NFL knew and when it knew it – questions at the heart of crisis that threatens football, from the highest levels all the way down to Pop Warner.

I have lived this remarkable story.
By sandy
I write this review as the first wife of a former professional football player (quarterback). While reading League of Denial, I have cried over the stories from the players and their wives. I lived that life. My husband played serious football through high school, university, and professional ball through the 70's. As far as I know, he had at least 11 concussions during his football career. Some of those concussions put him in the hospital. Then the next day, he was back on the football field. While sitting in the stands with the other football wives I often heard the fans yelling, "Kill the quarterback". A difficult thing to listen to. My former husband has always had sever headaches. Those headaches often caused him to be an absent father to our three sons. To see your husband go from a peaceful loving man to one who at times was controlling, angry, and abusive, was no less than shattering and very confusing. His unpredictable behavior often scared me. League of Denial has helped me realize that my husband's behavior was not always his fault. Now, I understand his odd behavior and it makes sense to me. And, it makes me very sad. How sad that neither one of us knew at that time what was happening to his brain. Football does not only affect the players but it also affects the families who are involved in this game. The denial of the danger of football, by the NFL, is understandable from a monetary perspective. However, it is not an excuse. I dearly hope that the Canadian Football League players take care of themselves. By doing so, they are also taking care of their wives and children. I also dearly hope that the fans will listen to themselves when they yell in dissatisfaction at the players. The fans have no idea how hard the players are working. This is their life and ultimately sometimes their death.

Every fan should read this book
By Amazon Customer
Kind of unputtdownable. Recently, various sources have shone a flashlight on the problem of head injuries in football. This book directs a 2000 candle power searchlight onto the problem. After reading it, you'll wonder how the NFL is continuing to get away with what could be called murder - certainly a slow destruction of some of their players. What happened in the tobacco industry proves that no one is infallible. I'm hoping that with the information in this book, the genius grant the McArthur Foundation gave to Kevin Guskiewicz, and raised awareness , the NFL will finally be made to answer for the harm they've done and are continuing to do to their players and alums. I don't think I'll ever watch a game again without thinking of this book.

Very well documented, thorough history of concussions, CTE and brain damage in NFL players
By K. Durkin
First, I will note that I myself had a concussion when I was 7 after I fell off my bicycle and fractured my skull. I was "out" for four hours and don't recall anything of the hour before the accident. It is part of the reason that I am very interested in the research.

As an avid NFL fan since the late 70s, I found this book difficult to read. The stories of what many players have had to endure after they retired is heartbreaking. The first time that I recall concussions being discussed in the media were in the time of Al Toon's retirement at the age of 29 after he said he had 9 concussions. I vaguely remember it being said then that there was a belief that having had one made a person predisposed to another and also there was a theory that some players are more prone to them, like Toon.

In reading this book, it carefully lays out what was known about concussions by whom and when. And the startling thing is that a lot of what we take for granted, still wasn't considered hard science even 20 years ago. In 1990, a team doctor wanted to keep Bubby Brister out of a game and the Steelers Coach Chuck Noll wanted to know why and on what basis or evidence. At the time, they were guidelines. But the doctor had no conclusive proof exactly how much time was necessary to heal a concussion. Healing times are different. There was no test, no baseline.

What the book does well is take the reader from that time when things were murky to the death of Mike Webster when there was a change. A Nigerian, Dr. Omalu, made the decision to study the Hall of Famer's brain even though he died of a heart attack due to what the doctor had read about the player's odd behavior over the last few years. After the brain was "fixed", stained and placed the brain tissue under a microscope he saw something that had not been seen before. He saw Tau. Tau, a substance in the brain, was strangling portions of Websters brain. Tau also goes a little crazy in Alzheimer's patients in a different way. The brain damage in boxers is not the same either. It was something new. And it opened up a whole new can of craziness for the NFL.

There is so much in here that is infuriating. The NFL Retirement board paid benefits for brain damage, yet the Mild Traumatic Brain Injury Committee said "football doesn't cause brain damage". There were people who wanted to help find out exactly what was going on and they were discredited or marginalized by the NFL.

I think the book is extremely well written and it lays out all the people who have been involved (including their flaws and all) and just tells the story without really trying to steer a person in a direction. One thing that is interesting is that many of the people involved in identifying the issue love football and they're working to benefit the players they love and respect.

The one thing that I wish were included is more about why the players are not reporting concussions to the team doctors. Of course, part of it is that they're competitive and want to play, but I feel that another part of it has to do with the fact that contracts aren't guaranteed. In baseball, someone like Mike Witt could have a 5 year guaranteed contract and only end up throwing a few innings over those five years. But in football, you can't play, you get cut. Dave Duerson's wife alluded to it briefly.

The Greatest Game: The Montreal Canadiens, the Red Army, and the Night That Saved Hockey, by Todd Denault

This game wasn't about money, points, or trophies. Instead it was played for pride, both personal and national. It was a confrontation twenty years in the making and it marked a turning point in the history of hockey.

On December 31, 1975, the Montreal Canadiens, the most successful franchise in the NHL, hosted the touring Central Red Army, the dominant team in the Soviet Union. For three hours millions of people in both Canada and the Soviet Union were glued to their television sets. What transpired that evening was a game that surpassed all the hype and was subsequently referred to as "the greatest game ever played." Held at the height of the Cold War, this remarkable contest transcended sports and took on serious cultural, sociological, and political overtones. And while the final result was a 3-3 tie, no one who saw the game was left disappointed. This exhibition of skill was hockey at its finest, and it set the bar for what was to follow as the sport began its global expansion.

1. A RUDE AWAKENING

Stockholm, Sweden, March 7, 1954. Canada is a country often divided by geographic, spiritual, and linguistic differences, and yet there is one sport that can bring everyone together. The first organized indoor hockey game on ice took place in Montreal on March 3, 1875, and by the dawn of the twentieth century, hockey was established as Canada’s most popular sport.

The popularity of hockey soon expanded into other countries, particularly in Europe. At the 1920 Winter Olympics the first World Championship was contested, and Canada, represented by the Winnipeg Falcons, breezed to the gold medal, outscoring its opponents 27–1.1

The World Championships became an annual event in 1930, and Canada, represented by teams like the RCAF Flyers and the Edmonton Mercurys, emerged as hockey’s dominant country, winning fifteen of the first eighteen championships in which it entered. In spite of their previous successes, the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association was unable to find a team that was willing to go overseas and represent the country at the 1954 World Championship in Stockholm. The issue was the ever increasing financial concerns. In addition to the travelling costs involved in such a venture, there was a growing resentment from within the association that the Canadian teams were not getting a fair shake overseas. In the days leading up to the tournament the Canadian teams would routinely play exhibition games throughout Europe. Wherever they played, the touring Canadians gathered tremendous crowds, but they received very little, if any, of the gate receipts. This left the touring Canadian team with no way of recouping their travel, meal, and accommodation expenses. As well, many of the Canadian teams had become increasingly frustrated with what was seen as a bias against the “Canadian” style of hockey, which in the view of many of their European opponents and officials was characterized by its aggressiveness, belligerence, and overt physicality.

Despite all of these issues and with many of the best Senior A teams declining the invitation, the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association found a willing team in the East York Lyndhursts. A Senior B amateur team located in suburban Toronto, the Lyndhursts were not up to the standards of some of Canada’s previous entries, many of whom were former Allan Cup winners, which annually crowned the best team in Senior A hockey.

However, once the tournament began, none of this seemed to matter, as the Lyndhursts outscored their opponents 57–5, winning all six of their games with ease. In their seventh game, the Lyndhursts would be playing for the gold medal. Their opponents were participating in their first international tournament and like Canada had won all six of their games. For the very first time a Canadian team would play against a Soviet team in an encounter with serious political overtones.

In March 1954, the Cold War was less than a decade old and was already characterized by an uninterrupted state of political conflict, military tension, and economic rivalry that placed the Soviet Union (and its satellite countries) on one side and Canada (and much of the Western world, led by the United States) on the other side.

A unique characteristic of the Cold War was that the two sides never engaged in direct conflict but instead focused their attention on competition on every level. The two warring sides struggled for military superiority, raced each other to the moon, and fought for scientific and technical supremacy. In the quest for global authority, propaganda became a valuable tool in the conflict and the fields of sports and culture became important fronts, whether it was events like the Olympics or high-profile chess games. Hockey was not immune from this conflict and international matches took on an added importance, as “us vs. them” became a rallying cry for both sides.

The deciding game of the 1954 World Hockey Championship was contested in the afternoon. The combination of the warm spring weather and an outdoor facility normally reserved for football made the skating surface the worst it had been throughout the tournament. In among a crowd of sixteen thousand spectators sat a lone reporter from Canada representing Canadian Press.

As the Soviets skated out, he couldn’t help but make note of their appearance. Their jerseys hung too long on their slender builds, their sticks were all homemade, and in a time when most players went bare-headed, the Soviet team sported bicycle helmets. For the Lyndhursts the Soviet team may as well have come from another planet. The Canadians were unfamiliar with many of the Soviet players and woefully unprepared for what was to come. The Russians, on the other hand, were not so ill prepared. In the days leading up to their encounter the Russians had closely studied the team from East Lyndhurst. They were alarmed by the loud noise of the puck careening off the boards as the Canadians shots let out a large thumping sound. Not possessing any hard shooters themselves, the Russians strategy was to take away the powerful shot from their Canadian adversaries.2

The game was barely a few minutes old when the differences between the two teams became apparent to all those in attendance. The Lyndhursts seemed nervous and played a tentative game, allowing the Soviets to take control, using a variety of quick passes, hard checking, and superior skating. The stunned Canadian squad was unable to mount any sort of counterattack.

“The Russians also took a leaf out of Canada’s book by bodychecking fiercely and by racing to face the Canadians before they had time to start plays,” reported Canadian Press. “The result was that the Canadian attacks were limited to stray sorties.”3

“Their slowest skater was faster than our fastest skater,” remembered Canadian forward Eric Unger, expressing just how outclassed the Lyndhursts were that day.4

“Their passes clicked while Canada’s went astray,” Canadian Press observed. “Their defense took competent charge of most East York attacks while the Canadians frequently left Goalie Don Lockhart unprotected in their headlong charges up the ice. The former Maritime netminder played brilliantly but the constant Russian pressure took a steady toll.”5 With their offensive thrusts going virtually unopposed, the Soviets ran up a 4–0 lead after the first period, extended it to 7–1 at the end of the second period, and protected their lead on their way to icing a 7–2 win and the country’s first championship.

As the final buzzer echoed through the stadium, dozens of excited Russian officials, clad in long black coats, ran onto the ice and planted triumphant kisses on their jubilant players. The directors of the tournament then presented the players with their gold medals as the Soviet anthem played in the background. Standing on their own blue line the defeated Canadians could only watch as the Soviet flag was slowly hoisted in the air.

In a war where propaganda was a valuable tool, the victory was treated in the Soviet Union as a national triumph. The state-sponsored newspapers downplayed the Lyndhursts’ amateur status, instead reiterating that the Soviets had defeated “Team Canada.”

And while the Soviet Union celebrated, Canada found itself in the midst of a national crisis. Canada had slipped from its pedestal, and the sport had turned a corner.

Lionel Conacher, a sitting Member of Parliament and the man honoured as Canada’s greatest athlete of the first half of the twentieth century, proclaimed the result “a catastrophe” for Canadian hockey.6 “Canadian youngsters are brought up to believe that we have the best hockey players in the world,” said Conacher, expressing in words the shame that spread through the Canadian hockey community. “Now they know only that the Russians beat us.”7

Conn Smythe, the founder and then-managing director of the Toronto Maple Leafs, took it a step further, announcing on the night after the decisive game “that his team is prepared to go to Russia immediately . . . we’re only interested in one thing – to keep the old flag flying.”8

Smythe went on to boldly announce that once the NHL playoff season concluded in late April that the Leafs would be available to travel to Moscow to confront the champion Soviets.

In the end, the words of challenge did not amount to much. The Toronto Maple Leafs never did make the trek to Russia. In fact, it would be another twenty-one years before a team from the National Hockey League faced off against a team from the Soviet Union.

Canadiens Rock!
By R Murphy
This book provides an interesting, scholarly, and quite readable trip down memory lane, an especially enjoyable stroll for fans of the great Canadiens teams of the 1970s. While it is ostensibly aimed at those who wish to know the background to the 1975 New Year's Eve classic, Soviet Red Army vs the Montreal Canadiens, Mr. Denault's book will appeal to anyone who has an interest in the history of Soviet hockey, or an interest in the evolution of the NHL in the 1960s and 70s, or is a fan of the les Habitants. This book covers in some detail the beginnings of Soviet "professional" hockey, from the coaches and the Soviet scheme to the heavy-handedness of the Soviet hierarchy. The author takes us behind the scenes of Canadian hockey in the 50s and 60s, the farm system, the evolution of the draft, and the impact of the WHA on salaries and the style of play. Throughout Denault contrasts the disparity in Soviet and Canadian hockey organizations and the reluctance of Canadian coaches to even consider an alternative to their rough and tough, individualistic brand of hockey, doubtless a consequence of the contrasting political and social realities in the respective systems. Some may quibble at the detail that Mr. Denault provides early on, but he does lay out the many concurrent trends in hockey and in sport in general at the time. And his approach sets the stage for vivid descriptions of the 1972 Summit Series between the NHL and the Red Army, and the 1974 series in which the new WHA vainly attempted to repeat the NHL team's success. Numerous personalities are brought to life, from Sam Pollock and Fred Shero, to Ken Dryden and Larry Robinson. On the Soviet side we are introduced to its ground-breaking coach Anatoli Tarasov, and presented compelling portraits of Vladislav Tretiak and Valeri Kharlamov and many others. The Game, the climax of the book, comes rather late in the proceedings, but to be fair, there is only so much that one can describe about a 60 minute sporting event, even a momentous one. The real story, we learn, is mostly prologue. When at last Mr. Denault brings us to the storied Forum to witness the game, he helps us re-live those exciting events through an elegant prose that is equal to the beauty and purity of the game itself. Despite the broad scope of the work and a few editing oversights, I enjoyed the book very much, and recommend it to all fans of the great game of hockey.

One of the best
By Brent Andrew
Does a sporting event matter to anything significant beyond its own boundaries?

In 1975, at the height of the Cold War, the Montreal Canadiens hosted the hockey team of the Soviet Union's Red Army. The game itself did not disappoint - the 3-to-3 tie was called "the greatest game ever played" - and is considered the launching point for hockey's global expansion. Author Todd Denault expertly conveys the excitement of the game, but goes deeper, to reveal the political and social forces behind a sporting event that became symbolic of global strategic stalemate between the East the West.

The Greatest Game
By Menikoe
The Greatest Game was recommended to me by a long time friend & hockey coach. It is a very easy read & the background information on 1) the development of the Soviet system, 2) the development of many of the key players & coaches for both teams and 3) what the trends were in the NHL during the 1970s is quite fascinating.I would highly recommend reading this book if you wanted to gain more insight of what took place in the NHL and Soviet Hockey during the 3 decades leading up to the game b/w the Montreal Canadians & the Soviet Red Army. For those of us who grew up playing and watching NHL Hockey during the 1960s and 1970s, you will experience several flashbacks (some good, some not so good)of what we saw.

The book to end all books.

Stephen King look out! There's a contender to the throne: Lorne Rubenstein! "Nice shot!" This farcical romp across the groomed fairways and country clubs of the PGA Tour has our protaganist, Mike Weir, hitting nice golf shots while standing on the less popular side of the ball. The book is organized into "chapters" and contains words of all shapes and sizes. Adjectives are particularly descriptive as are adverbs, in the case of describing action words or "verbs". Colorful stuff. The photography is excellent and may have been taken with a digital camera of the highest pixelation! I hope, in the future, that Mike doesn't, like Fuzzy Zoeller, put his golf shoe in his mouth and utter racially insensitive comments involving chicken. This book is a page turner extraordinaire that is sure to join the ranks of "Tom Sawyer" and "Hamlet" as a page turners extraordinaire. Kudos for a fabulous book of words about golf. Fore!

Amazon.com Review
Turn-of-the-century Toronto makes an evocative setting for murder in Except the Dying, a skillful first novel that is interesting both for its historical accuracy and its fully realized characters. The plot concerns the murder of a young housemaid, discovered naked in a snowy lane, and the cast of suspects spans the social strata. Yet it is William Murdoch, the detective in charge of the case, who breathes life into what might otherwise have been a conventional murder mystery. As he pursues his quest for justice, Murdoch also mourns the death of his fiancée; his manner of doing both reveals a compassionate, principled man--one whose fictional endeavors (readers hope) have only just begun.

From Library Journal
First novelist Jennings, herself a British transplant to Canada, provides a provocative look at a wealthy, turn-of-the-century British family living in Toronto. Acting detective William Murdoch handles a case that exposes not only the dysfunctional nature of the Rhodes family, whose young French-Canadian maid has been discovered dead, drugged, and pregnant in the snow, but also the peculiarities of a class-conscious society. Murdoch investigates and then spars with bigoted higher-ups until he uncovers the murderer. A finely flavored plot, credible characters, and detailed atmosphere make this a winner.

From Kirkus Reviews
How ungrateful of Therese Laporte to leave her maid's post with Dr. Rhodes in Toronto to sneak out of the house and return to her family back in Chatham without any notice or explanation but a hastily scrawled paper. And how inconsiderate of her to turn up dead in a disreputable neighborhood, naked, drugged, and dead of asphyxia and exposure. Now Acting Detective William Murdoch, who suspects it'll be years before he's promoted, is examining the doctor's household under a microscope. How long will it be before he finds out that Cyril Rhodes's servants are bursting with accusations against each other and their master? Or that the chilly relations between Dr. Rhodes and his English wife Donalda are based on a long-standing (and highly material) grudge? Or that their son Owen has asked his all-but-fianc‚e, Harriet Shepcote, to tell a fib about what time he left her father Alderman Godfrey Shepcote's house the night of Therese's death? Or that the unsullied Rhodes family has closer ties to Alice Black and Ettie Weston, a pair of working girls who cherish some dangerous knowledge about that last night, than they'd like to acknowledge? Jennings handles every aspect of the fin-de-siŠcle milieu- -the domestic rituals, the social divisions, the suspects' secrets, the bachelor investigator's loneliness--with such assurance that the villain's identity is a major disappointment. Surely this talented newcomer will conclude her next novel more compellingly. -- Copyright ©1997, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

A Welcome Debut in the Historical Mystery Genre
By P. Bigelow
In Jennings' debut, it is winter in 1895 Toronto and the police have discovered the nude body of a young woman. Initially believing that she was a woman of the streets who froze to death on her way home, the police are disposed to dismiss the death as accidental. However, they soon discover that while there was no alcohol in her bloodstream there was opium and other indicators that have them believing that she was murdered. Detective William Murdoch is assigned the task of not only finding out who murdered her, but who she is as well.
This is a police procedural in the truest sense. We watch as Murdoch painstakingly follows one tidbit to the next. For each question he thinks he's answered two more arise in his mind. As we go along, we are introduced to many players any one of whom could be the murderer.
Jennings was very clever in her writing of this procedural. While the reader quickly suspects various characters, Murdoch remains an innocent - willing to suspect someone, but not willing to believe with no proof. The bits of proof are doled out slowly - as slowly as it takes Murdoch to discover them. When all the puzzle pieces finally come together, the furtiveness of several characters is adequately explained, the choice of murderer makes sense, and there is relief that that the book has finally ended. The book moves slowly, sometimes bordering on tediousness, and the temptation is to set it aside for a faster read, but resist that temptation. As Murdoch pieces the puzzle together, the book picks up speed so that it may seem like Jennings has rushed the ending, but the way she has handled it, it makes sense for this book.

Good, but different to the TV series
By N. L. Passmore
I read this book because I recently started watching the Murdoch Mysteries TV series and absolutely love it. (Okay, I know it's been going for six years, but I just discovered it on a recent trip to Canada). I was a bit disappointed when I started reading the book because it was quite different to the TV series. Murdoch is okay, but not as dishy and charming as the TV Murdoch. There was also no sign of the sassy Dr Ogden or any love interest for that matter. The interesting inventions and forensics of the TV show were also missing. However, once I forgot about the TV Murdoch and just started treating it like a separate murder mystery, I started to enjoy it a lot more.

Maureen Jennings evokes the era really well. Her interesting descriptions and snappy dialogue make you feel like you really are in 1890s Toronto. The characterisations were good and historical elements were expertly woven into the story. She handled the class differences really well and brought the seedier side of the city to life. The pace picked up towards the end and the resolution of the mystery was satisying. There was also a hint that there could be a love interest for Murdoch in Book 2. I would possibly read more books in the series.

In summary, if you pick up this book because you like the TV series, you might be a little disappointed. But if you treat it as a separate Whodunnit, it's quite good.

Intense mystery with great effects
By Brenda
I considered Except the Dying a dark mystery. It takes place in Toronto in 1895. The townspeople come across as cold as the Canadian winter it occurs in. Detective Murdoch is trying to solve the crime of a young maid found frozen to death and he doesn't seem to be getting much help.
Maureen Jennings is a gifted writer. Her characters conversations made me feel a part of the story. The author has an ability to shock her readers at some points in her story and there was a couple of points in the first three of four chapters in which I was ready to bail. But, I stayed with it to try and solve the mystery. I would consider it a mature theme mystery.
Ms. Jennings has given us an interesting series. Can't wait to see it on film.

He also looks at Black West Coast businessmen who helped found British Columbia, particularly Victoria, and Black settlement in the prairie provinces. Throughout Winks explores efforts by African-Canadians to establish and maintain meaningful lifestyles in Canada. The Blacks in Canada investigates the French and English periods of slavery, the abolitionist movement in Canada, and the role played by Canadians in the broader continental antislavery crusade, as well as Canadian adaptations to nineteenth- and twentieth-century racial mores. The second edition includes a new introduction by Winks on changes that have occurred since the book's first appearance and where African-Canadian studies stands today.

Chasing Chaos: My Decade In and Out of Humanitarian Aid, by Jessica Alexander

Jessica Alexander arrived in Rwanda in the aftermath of the 1994 genocide as an idealistic intern, eager to contribute to the work of the international humanitarian aid community. But the world that she encountered in the field was dramatically different than anything she could have imagined. It was messy, chaotic, and difficult—but she was hooked.
In this honest and irreverent memoir, she introduces readers to the realities of life as an aid worker. We watch as she manages a 24,000-person camp in Darfur, collects evidence for the Charles Taylor trial in Sierra Leone, and contributes to the massive aid effort to clean up a shattered Haiti. But we also see the alcohol-fueled parties and fleeting romances, the burnouts and self-doubt, and the struggle to do good in places that have long endured suffering.
Tracing her personal journey from wide-eyed and naïve newcomer to hardened cynic and, ultimately, to hopeful but critical realist, Alexander transports readers to some of the most troubled locations around the world and shows us not only the seemingly impossible challenges, but also the moments of resilience and recovery.

Review

“In Chasing Chaos, Jessica Alexander serves up a sharp critique of the multi-billion dollar humanitarian aid industry, wrapped in a tender coming-of-age story. Her quietly evocative prose recreates the painful, poignant, and sometimes hilarious experience of marching into 'the field' of armed conflict and disaster to relieve suffering, supported by donations from those who expect heroism. With remarkable honesty and empathy, Alexander reveals how absurd and presumptuous it is to imagine we can fix the world and, even more profoundly, why we must continue to try. An important book.” —Sheri Fink, New York Times bestselling author of Five Days at Memorial

“Terrific new memoir...It's Wild in Sudan.” —Nicholas Kristof, New York Times columnist

“In her new book Chasing Chaos, Jessica Alexander offers a poignant, clear-eyed look at the world of international disaster relief and her own addiction to aid work…Chasing Chaos is a reminder that happiness is an act of delicate and ever-evolving inner compromise. The book makes you simultaneously want to pack your bags and never leave home.” —The Daily Beast

“Enlightening...eye-opening...Chasing Chaos is a solid contribution to what is hopefully a growing genre of writing about a sector that deserves more attention and oversight.” —Associated Press

“Jessica Alexander's book, Chasing Chaos, is not only a candid portrait of the life of a humanitarian aid worker, but a wonderful coming-of-age story that will resonate with any woman who has questioned how to have a more meaningful life.”
—Mia Farrow

“Refreshingly absent in Chasing Chaos are any declarations of grandeur or of superior moral fiber. Rather, Alexander’s honesty about her own ignorance on the true severity of the conditions in the places she visits is precisely what makes her remarkable story so accessible. Even now, after a decade working with multiple humanitarian organizations, the author still makes plain how much she has to learn. Alexander is proud of her achievements, and certainly should be, but it is in her detailing of the vast room for improvement in the system that she focuses, with a dry wit and healthy dose of honest self-evaluation, that we are able to connect with her experiences on a more personal level. We are all the more fortunate for it.”
—Bustle.com

“I think that is what Jessica does so well: puts a human face on aid work. And not just her face, but the faces of her international and national colleagues…Jessica reveals the inconsistencies, the ambivalence of aid work as she takes us to Sudan, Sierra Leone, Sri Lanka, New York, and Haiti. But, she also offers valuable lessons for the next generation.” —Brendan Rigby, whydev.org

“What Mary Roach does for the alimentary canal in Gulp and Robin Nagle does for garbage collecting in Picking Up, Jessica Alexander does for global catastrophe in Chasing Chaos...An entertaining memoir of life on the front lines of global catastrophe reveals as much about its author as the world of humanitarian aid.”
—Shelf Awareness

“A no-holds-barred description of what it is like to travel to world disaster sites and engage in the complex, challenging, nitty-gritty work of making a difference across lines of culture, class, age, gender, and perspective. In telling the story of her decade as a young and passionate humanitarian aid worker, Jessica Alexander also manages to tell us the best and the worst of what this work is like and to speculate on the aid establishment—how it has changed, where it works and what its limits are. A must read for anyone with global interests—and that should be all of us.” —Ruth Messinger, President, American Jewish World Service

“Chasing Chaos examines the lives that aid workers lead and the work which aid workers do with honesty, clarity, and warmth. While the book is peppered with hilarious anecdotes—it is also salted with tears. Honest, genuine, heartfelt tears. This life and this work that aid and development workers embark upon so often oscillates wildly between stomach bursting laughter and shoulder seizing weeping—Chasing Chaos captures these oscillations, and the doldrums in between the ends of the spectrum, perfectly.” —Casey Kuhlman, New York Times bestselling author of Shooter

“During ten years of working with the sick, the hungry, and the injured, Jessica Alexander touches and is touched by victims of genocide, earthquakes, tsunamis, and bombs. The compelling quality of this book is Alexander’s honesty, sharp observations, and conversational prose. With humor and insight, she shares the intimate details of her everyday life. Even if you’re a seasoned traveler, this entry into the world of humanitarian aid organizations—the good, the bad, and the frustrating—is fascinating.” —Rita Golden Gelman, author of Tales of a Female Nomad

“In Chasing Chaos, Alexander takes us to a place where few outsiders can go, cracking open the rarefied world of humanitarianism to bare its contradictions—and her own—with boldness and humor. The result is an immensely valuable field guide to the mind of that uniquely powerful and vulnerable of beasts: the international aid worker.” —Jonathan M. Katz, author of The Big Truck That Went By: How the World Came to Save Haiti and Left Behind a Disaster

“Not only is Jessica Alexander a wonderful writer—her clear, evocative prose transported me into refugee camps in Darfur, war-trials in Sierra Leone and post-earthquake Haiti—but she is honest about the complexity of 'doing good,' without being defeatist. Funny, touching, and impossible to put down, this book should be required reading for anyone contemplating a career in aid, and for all of us who wonder how we can make a useful contribution to a better world, wherever we are.” —Marianne Elliott, author of Zen Under Fire: How I Found Peace in the Midst of War

“A fresh, very readable, highly personal account of the trials and tribulations of a young aid worker as she confronts the daily realities— the good, the bad and the very uncomfortable—of life dealing with some of the most important humanitarian challenges of the last decade.” —Ross Mountain, Former Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary General and Humanitarian Coordinator, United Nations

“You'll start Chasing Chaos because you are interested in humanitarian aid. You'll finish because of Jessica Alexander's irresistible storytelling: her honesty, her humanity, her wackadoodle colleagues, her dad. I loved it.” —Kenneth Cain, author of Emergency Sex: and Other Desperate Measures

“A hardened idealist's challenging look at the contradictions, complications, and enduring importance of humanitarian aid.” —Robert Calderisi, author of The Trouble with Africa: Why Foreign Aid Isn't Working

"Jessica Alexander’s Chasing Chaos is a must read for anyone concerned with helping those in need. Americans are some of the most generous people on Earth in reaching out to those coping with disasters, both natural and man-made, but how we give and what we give can make the difference between saving lives and only making a bad situation even worse. The path to hell really can be paved with good intentions, as Ms. Alexander perceptively describes and as I have seen during my own twenty plus years working in Africa and the Middle East, including many tours dealing with the same countries Alexander portrays. She knows of what she speaks.” —Christopher Datta, Former American Foreign Service Officer and author of Touched with Fire: Based on the True Story of Ellen Craft

Uneven
By Electronica
I bought this book when I went to one of her public appearances. As another reviewer noted, Ms Alexander is an impressive speaker, thoughtful and knowledgeable, and I was hoping the book would follow through.

Although her prose was as excellent as her public speaking, I thought the book was disappointing. It's more of a "coming of age" story, complete with failed relationships, occasional hookups, idealism sullied by harsh realities, and late-night discussions about the meaning of life with her girlfriends. I was amused when "years later" and "years ago" turned out to be 3-year spans of time....really she could benefit from a little perspective; her lifetime is just beginning! And really no one should be surprised that aid agencies staffed by real human beings and dependent on donations fall prey to politics,image-burnishing, and inefficiencies. Hardly a revelation!

All that being said, I learned a lot about the particular catastrophes she was involved in; I'll admit I'm one of the people who has trouble with African geography. And her descriptions of the maturing aid "community" which is really a late-20th century development are enlightening. With people like her involved, I'm sure it will continue to improve in effectiveness and efficiency.

Summary--excellent writing and informative about some recent history, but way too chatty. Perhaps her next book will provide a more thorough perspective on international aid.

Excellent Book
By John Standiford
I've often wondered what draws people to save the world by traveling around the globe and offering aid to those in other countries. While it sounds xenophobic, I've often thought that with all the needs in our own nation, why go somewhere else and why would you think you can make a difference.

That's what led me to Chasing Chaos by Jessica Alexander. While I can't say that the book answers all of my questions, it does an excellent job in providing information and a personal experience that I found informative, thought-provoking and important. Ms. Alexander has spent considerable time in places in Africa, Haiti and other locales and has provided an excellent account and analysis of foreign aid and the world of NGOs, the U.N. and disaster recovery efforts.

Her description and re-telling of her time in Rwanda, Sierra Leone and Haiti were excellent and I feel much better informed after reading it.

I recommend this book wholeheartedly. Ms. Alexander walks the lines between autobiographer, journalist and scholar in this book and the end product is exceptional.

An Engrossing, Eye-Opening Read
By PushkinLover
If you've ever wanted to save the world and wondered how (and how not) to do it, Chasing Chaos is the book to read. Chasing Chaos is neither an academic treatise nor a muckraking expose, and readers should not expect to find either prescriptions for or blanket condemnations of the current aid effort. The book is an extremely readable and engaging personal memoir that charts one young woman's education in the challenging, maddening, and ultimately heartbreaking world of humanitarian aid.

The reader will learn a great deal about the ways that valiant aid workers like Jessica Alexander strive to confront some of the most difficult humanitarian situations of our time. In her years of work in the field, Alexander experienced a wide range of different aid scenarios and the book does an excellent job of revealing the particular complexities and challenges of each, giving the reader a compelling and thought-stimulating overview of the significant challenges that "doing good" poses for everyone concerned, and it does so in a way that is engrossing, sympathetic, and often quite funny.

Readers will be drawn in by Alexander's personality and the way she vividly writes about her own development in the developing world, from wide-eyed ingénue to someone who is critical of many aspects of the aid effort, but also deeply hopeful about the difference that coordinated aid can make in people's lives. There will always be disasters, both natural and man-made, so you can read this book and be thankful that people like Jessica Alexander are willing to go to places that most of us would not want to visit, much less live, and marshal their intelligence, financial resources, and empathy in humanitarian service to some of the most dispossessed people on our fraught planet.
