About the Author
Stephen Leacock was born in Swanmore, Hampshire, England, in 1869. His family emigrated to Canada in 1876 and settled on a farm north of Toronto. Educated at Upper Canada College and the University of Toronto, Leacock pursued graduate studies in economics at the University of Chicago, where he studied under Thorstein Veblen.

Even before he completed his doctorate, Leacock accepted a position as sessional lecturer in political science and economics at McGill University. When he received his Ph.D. in 1903, he was appointed to the position of lecturer. From 1908 until his retirement in 1936, he chaired the Department of Political Science and Economics.

Leacock’s most profitable book was his textbook, Elements of Political Science, which was translated into seventeen languages. The author of nineteen books and countless articles on economics, history, and political science, Leacock turned to the writing of humour as his beloved avocation. His first collection of comic stories, Literary Lapses, appeared in 1910, and from that time until his death he published a volume of humour almost every year.

Leacock also wrote popular biographies of his two favourite writers, Mark Twain and Charles Dickens. At the time of his death, he left four completed chapters of what was to have been his autobiography. These were published posthumously under the title The Boy I Left Behind Me.

Stephen Leacock died in Toronto, Ontario, in 1944.

“Now, ladies and gentlemen,” said the conjurer, “having shown you that the cloth is absolutely empty, I will proceed to take from it a bowl of goldfish. Presto!”

All around the hall people were saying, “Oh, how wonderful! How does he do it?”

But the Quick Man on the front seat said in a big whisper to the people near him. “He — had — it — up — his — sleeve.”

Then the people nodded brightly at the Quick Man and said, “Oh, of course”; and everybody whispered round the hall. “He — had — it — up — his — sleeve.”

“My next trick,” said the conjurer, “is the famous Hindostanee rings. You will notice that the rings are apparently separate; at a blow they all join (clang. clang, clang) — Presto!”

There was a general buzz of stupefaction till the Quick Man was heard to whisper. “He — must — have — had — another — lot — up — his — sleeve.”

Again everybody nodded and whispered. “The — rings — were — up — his — sleeve.”

The brow of the conjurer was clouded with a gathering frown.

“I will now,” he continued, “show you a most amusing trick by which I am enabled to take any number of eggs from a hat. Will some gentleman kindly lend me his hat? Ah. Thank you — Presto!”

He extracted seventeen eggs, and for thirty-five seconds the audience began to think that he was wonderful.

Then the Quick Man whispered along the front bench, “He — has — a — hen — up — his — sleeve.” and all the people whispered it on. “He — has — a — lot — of — hens — up — his — sleeve.”

The egg trick was ruined.

It went on like that all through. It transpired from the whispers of the Quick Man that the conjurer must have concealed up his sleeve, in addition to the rings, hens, and fish, several packs of cards, a loaf of bread, a doll’s cradle, a live guinea-pig, a fifty-cent piece, and a rocking-chair.

The reputation of the conjurer was rapidly sinking below zero. At the close of the evening he rallied for a final effort.

“Ladies and gentlemen,” he said. “I will present to you, in conclusion, the famous Japanese trick recently invented by the natives of Tipperary. Will you. Sir,” he continued, turning toward the Quick Man, “will you kindly hand me your gold watch?”

It was passed to him.

“Have I your permission to put it into this mortar and pound it to pieces?” he asked savagely.

The Quick Man nodded and smiled.

The conjurer threw the watch into the mortar and grasped a sledge hammer from the table. There was a sound of violent smashing. “He’s — slipped — it — up — his — sleeve,” whispered the Quick Man.

“Now, sir,” continued the conjurer, “will you allow me to take your handkerchief and punch holes in it? Thank you. You see, ladies and gentlemen, there is no deception, the holes are visible to the eye.”

The face of the Quick Man beamed. This time the real mystery of the thing fascinated him.

“And now, sir, will you kindly pass me your silk hat and allow me to dance on it? Thank you.”

The conjurer made a few rapid passes with his feet and exhibited the hat crushed beyond recognition.

“And will you now, sir, take off your celluloid collar and permit me to bum it in the candle? Thank you, sir. And will you allow me to smash your spectacles for you with my hammer? Thank you.”

By this time the features of the Quick Man were assuming a puzzled expression. “This thing beats me,” he whispered, “I don’t see through it a bit.”

There was a great hush upon the audience. Then the conjurer drew himself up to his full height and, with a withering look at the Quick Man, he concluded:

“Ladies and gentlemen, you will observe that I have, with this gentleman’s permission, broken his watch, burnt his collar, smashed his spectacles, and danced on his hat. If he will give me the further permission to paint green stripes on his overcoat, or to tie his suspenders in a knot, I shall be delighted to entertain you. If not, the performance is at an end.”

And amid a glorious burst of music from the orchestra the curtain fell, and the audience dispersed, convinced that there are some tricks, at any rate, that are not done up the conjurer’s sleeve.

An acquired taste, but fun satire

This book contains a collection of ironically satirical essays. Satire is not my favorite form of humor, so it took me a few essays to get "into the swing" of the book, but I can say that once I came around to the appropriate frame of reference, I quite enjoyed the book. When reading this book, you must also remember that it was originally published in 1910; the humorous themes of the essays have aged well, but some of the settings have not.
As I read the essays, I kept having the nagging thought that the author's style reminded me of a contemporary author. Once I reached the "How to Make a Million Dollars" essay, it hit me: I would not hesitate to call Stephen Leacock the Dave Barry (Miami columnist and author) of the early 1900s. They both have the same sort of perverse logic to their points of view. Thus, if you can picture Dave Barry writing in the early 1900s, you can get some idea of what reading this book of essays would be like.

A wonderful mixture of comedy, nonsense and compassion

Stephen Leacock was a Canadian author who wrote his works with an optimistic yet realistic view of life. His light-hearted, bubbly diction impressed me all the way through the novel. Each short story was unique and had true-to-life situations and entertaining characters to whom readers of all ages can relate. His stories are full of good advice for everyone from the socially elite, eager-to-please teenager to the hard-working businessman to the overprotective father. Leacock exaggerates in many of his sketches, but that aspect of each story fits in perfectly with the separate ideas he presents. I recommend this novel to anyone who agrees that life should be lived to the absolute fullest, taking all chances and having a good time. As Stephen Leacock says, "Eat what you want. Eat lots of it. Yes, eat too much of it. Eat till you can just stagger across the room with it and prop it up against the sofa." (Leacock Literary 31)

This is for those who love that dry English humor. I love this book! It mocks so beautifuly stupidities, naivete, and human anxietes. If you like slap stick humor, please look somewhere else.

Mike Brophy is a hockey analyst for Rogers Sportsnet, a syndicated columnist and twice-weekly analyst for The Team 990 in Montreal. Brophy covered junior hockey for the Peterborough Examiner for 14 years and served as a senior writer with The Hockey News for 17 years. The Hamilton, Ontario, native has been writing about hockey for more than 30 years and won six Ontario Newswire writing awards for his coverage of junior hockey. Brophy won the Benjamin Franklin Award for best new voice for his book Curtis Joseph: The Acrobat. OCTOBER 22, 1966
 
There have been many superstars in the history of the National Hockey League, but when it comes down to the question of the best player ever, the debate generally centres around two players: Bobby Orr and Wayne Gretzky. And it’s a close race, too. Gretzky set just about every scoring record you could imagine in his illustrious twenty-year career and is the NHL’s all-time leading scorer. He wasn’t the fastest skater, nor the hardest shooter, but he had unimaginable vision on the ice, and nobody made players around him better than Number 99.
 
Orr, on the other hand, had a tragically short career—just nine full seasons. In the three ensuing campaigns, one with Boston and two with the Chicago Blackhawks, Orr played a total of thirty-six games. Knee injuries cut short what could have been one of the most amazing and productive careers ever. Still, the case could be made that nobody revolutionized the game to a greater extent than the shy young man from Parry Sound, Ontario.
 
In an era when most defencemen worried mostly about preventing the opposition from scoring, Orr wanted more from the game. Sure, he loved to shut down the other team’s top players—that was his number-one priority. But it didn’t mean he wasn’t interested in joining the points party. When he got the puck, he didn’t simply fire it off the boards or glass and out of the zone. He looked for openings—like a football running back looking for daylight beyond his monstrous linemen as they cleared a path for his rush—and headed up the ice on a mission. His goal was to score—and if he could not do that himself, he aimed to at least help one of his teammates get on the board. The result was a new way of thinking for defencemen. Bobby Orr had been the sport’s golden boy from the time he first joined the Oshawa Generals of the Ontario Hockey Association as a fourteen-year-old, so why wouldn’t others follow his lead? Orr said nobody stood in his way when he started rushing the puck as a youngster. When he would gobble up the puck in his team’s zone and turn up ice, fans would move to the edges of their seats. What will he do? How far will he go?
 
“I didn’t have anybody who discouraged me from playing the way I played,” he said. “Don’t forget, they didn’t have the draft the way they do today, so when I was playing in Oshawa, when I was fourteen, the coaches there were hired by the Bruins. They didn’t discourage me or suggest I change my style. I just always played like that. Maybe it comes from playing river hockey or bay hockey. We scrimmaged . . . played shinny. That’s how I learned to play.
 
“I actually started out as a right winger when I first started playing hockey, and I don’t remember why I was moved back. But I guess it all worked out in the end. I believe it was Bucko McDonald who coached us in Parry Sound who moved me back to defence, but I don’t recall why.”
 
McDonald coached Orr during his peewee and bantam years. When Orr’s dad, Doug, asked why he moved Bobby to the blue line, McDonald responded, “Bobby was born to play defence.”
 
Truer words have never been spoken.
 
Being identified as an amazing hockey player at a young age can be a double-edged sword. For Orr, growing up in a small town in Northern Ontario, it meant having to move away from home at fourteen. Most parents won’t let their fourteen-year-old sons walk to the bus stop on their own nowadays, but in 1962 it was different. His quest to play in the NHL meant leaving home.
 
It wasn’t easy.
 
“I was so homesick,” Orr said. “It was tough being away from my parents, my friends, but I understood it was the next step and I was looking forward to it, so even though a part of me wanted to go home, I just fought through it.”
 
Orr joined the Oshawa Generals as a prodigy playing against young men up to five years his senior. Although he was baby-faced and looked every one of his fourteen years off the ice, Orr was an instant hero on it. He had 6 goals and 21 points that first year with Oshawa, and in his second season, at fifteen, he was third in team scoring with 29 goals and 72 points in 56 games. By now, the entire hockey world was aware of the young fearless defenceman who was changing the way the game was played.
 
In Orr’s third season with Oshawa, he upped his numbers to 34 goals and 93 points, good for second on the team, and in his final season of junior he scored a whopping 38 goals and 94 points in 47 games—tops on the club. His 92 penalty minutes in his fourth season was a good indicator that he would not be pushed around.
 
“People ask me why I had the success I had in the game, and I think it really comes down to the love and passion I had for the game,” Orr said. “Unfortunately, I think we suck the love and passion out of our kids by humiliating them for foolishness. I never had that taken out of me. It was never a job to me. It was never a big effort to go to practice. I couldn’t wait to get on the bay or the river. When my turn came to play indoors, I couldn’t wait to get to the rink to have some fun and be with my friends. It was a way of life, and I loved it. I was never told by my parents that I was going to be a pro hockey player and make money. I just had a great love and passion for the game and couldn’t wait to get on the ice. I was one of the fortunate ones who got to the NHL.”
 
As a youngster attending high school at R. S. McLaughlin Collegiate Vocational Institute, Orr proved he was more than a one-trick pony. Asked by the track and field coach if he’d be interested in running, Orr soon joined other runners for 7 a.m. training sessions. He found it pretty tiring to be getting home from road games in the wee hours of the morning and then having to get up to run through the halls at McLaughlin, so he packed it in.
 
“The coach then asked me if I could do anything else, so I tried my hand at javelin,” Orr said.
 
How did that work out?
 
“I still hold the school record for longest throw,” Orr said with a laugh.
 
After four years with the Generals, Orr was ready for the NHL. The Bruins held his rights, and boy, were they ever in need of an infusion of talent. Prior to his arrival, the Bruins had finished fifth out of six teams in 1965–66 and dead last the five seasons before that. Fans in Boston were aware of this teenage scoring phenom playing junior in Oshawa and couldn’t wait to see him for themselves. Although the Bruins dipped back to last place in his first season, with a 17–43–10 record, there was no denying he was a special player.
 
Even though he missed nine games with a knee injury, Orr managed 13 goals and 41 points with 102 penalty minutes and won the Calder Trophy as the NHL’s best rookie. New York Ranger veteran Harry Howell won the Norris Trophy as the league’s top defenceman, and upon accepting the award, said he was happy to have won it that season because Orr would own the trophy in the years to come. Howell’s off-thecuff comment turned out to be quite prophetic, as Orr won the Norris Trophy in each of the next eight seasons.
 
In Orr’s first game, on October 19, 1966, against the Detroit Red Wings, he didn’t score, but he got to know first-hand why people respected and feared Mr. Hockey, Gordie Howe. “I was watching a pretty pass that I made, and Gordie wanted to let the young player know the old guy was still around,” Orr recalled. “He stepped into me, and I went down hard. That was my welcome to the NHL. I had my head down and the old fella nailed me.”
 
Orr’s most famous goal, without question, was his overtime Cup winner against the St. Louis Blues in 1970. Orr took a pass from teammate Derek Sanderson and skated to the front of the goal, depositing a shot behind Glenn Hall. As the puck went in, Blues defenceman Noel Picard tripped Orr, who went flying through the air, his arms raised over his head in celebration of his championship-clinching score. The picture of Orr flying through the air is one of the most famous and enduring images in the history of the sport.
 
Long before he scored that goal, however, it all got started with his first NHL marker, on October 22, 1966, at the legendary Montreal Forum. Orr managed the lone Boston goal against Gump Worsley in a 3–1 loss to the Habs. “It was just a shot,” Orr said. “It wasn’t much of a big deal. It was a slapshot from the point that beat Gump. Hey, I think any time you experience a first it is a highlight, and scoring my first NHL goal was certainly a highlight for me. I first realized my dream of playing in the NHL, and then I get my first goal. It was really exciting . . . a thrill.”
 
When you consider all that Orr accomplished in his career, often playing hurt, one can only imagine what heights he might have soared to had he been healthy. The sport of hockey was robbed of so much more because of Orr’s knee problems. Orr’s first knee injury came in his rookie year and caused him to miss nine games. Each time he got hurt, doctors would cut into his knee and scrape away cartilage, until eventually it was bone on bone.
 
The Bruins won two Stanley Cups with Orr, in 1970 and 1972, and both times he was the Conn Smythe Trophy winner as the most valuable player in the playoffs. He was named the NHL’s most valuable player in three consecutive seasons, from 1970 to 1972, and was the MVP of the 1976 Canada Cup despite the fact he played in the tournament while injured. Orr was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1979. Orr finished his career with Chicago after he was unable to come to a contract agreement with the Bruins. His first season with Chicago, he played in just 20 games, scoring 4 goals and 23 points. The next year, he had 2 goals and 4 points in 6 games, but his knee was so bad, he retired. Incredibly, Orr never cashed a paycheque from the Blackhawks, saying he was paid to play hockey, and if he wasn’t playing, he wouldn’t accept their money.
 
Through it all, Orr said he loved the game and loved playing. Even though there were huge expectations placed upon him at age eighteen, when he entered the NHL, Orr said he was never fazed by the responsibility.
 
“I never really felt a lot of pressure, if pressure is things bothering you,” Orr said. “I didn’t start to feel that until I couldn’t do what I once did because of my legs. Then I started to worry, and I didn’t feel good. Leading up to that, heck, I was doing what I always dreamed of doing and I was being paid to play a game. Come on, I had it made. I had such a love and passion for what I was doing. I was doing what I wanted to do; what I loved to do. I just wanted to go out every night and be the best player I could be.”
 
And the best player Bobby Orr could be just might be the best of all time.

As they say, you never forget your first time

I applaud Mike Brophy for the concept of “My First Goal”. The author interviews 50 NHL players – some prominent, others not – and shares their recollection of their first NHL goal. (In the case of Pete Mahovlich, who admits he cannot remember his first NHL goal, he discusses the famous short-handed goal he scored in 1972 against the Russians.)

This book allows the famous (in some cases, the infamous or the slight-exposure-to-fleeting-famous) to reminisce about their early days. It gives us a glimpse at a time when big money and media exposure was not important to a young man who just achieved his lifetime goal of making it to the big-time. It discusses the feeling of skating in front of a massive audience, about sharing the ice and the locker room with players whom he used to watch on television, listen to on the radio, or read about in the newspapers.

In short … I loved it.

A Book From A Master's Apprentice

Biographies and accounts of the famous possess a certain fascination. Sometimes even flashes of illumination. But most are based on second-hand knowledge of authors attracted to the famous after attainment of fame. This is often too late because fame has a way of creating a type of trickster mythology obscuring its subject.
A rare few biographies are written by those who had close friendships with the famous before the hazy mythology of fame enveloped their subject. Here are the famous before they were "hijacked" and packaged by icon-making PR handlers, before their entrance onto world stages or tabloid pages. Reading these accounts is somewhat like watching scratchy old home movies that peek into the shadowy early years before later lives were illuminated by the bright flashes of the paparazzi cameras. These stories are often the most interesting, the most enlightening, the most instructive, and too, the most paradoxical and ambiguous.
These thoughts come to mind in reading the brilliant and fascinating book The Virtual Marshall McLuhan by Donald Theall professor emeritus, former president of Trent University and author of The Medium Is the Rear View Mirror. In the thick mythological haze which particularly surrounds the McLuhan legend, it is indeed a rare and insightful friendship.
With this in mind, Theall's book is still a funny hybrid genre not easy to place in traditional categories. Andrew Potter, a reporter for the Canadian National Post says it well in his March 24, 2001 review of the book "Rescuing McLuhan." Potter writes Theall's book "is not a biography of McLuhan, nor is it an application or elaboration of his views. It is perhaps best understood as an exercise in retrieval, an attempt to rescue McLuhan from McLuhanism and McLuhanites, from those who would portray him as the patron saint of the new corporate technotopia as well as from those...who would read him as an early voice in the wilderness, warning of civilization's demise."

In the summer of 1950, Donald Theall arrived at the University of Toronto as a graduate student. The director of Graduate Studies of the English Department attempted to warn Theall against doing a doctoral degree with an avant-garde, unorthodox professor at the University named Marshall McLuhan.
But Theall was not persuaded and decided to stay in Toronto to study under the iconoclastic professor rather than return to Yale. Theall writes "I felt that between the historically oriented University of Toronto Department of English and the avant-garde McLuhan I was obtaining a badly needed awareness of the study of literature in its historical context as well as within a new, broadly interdisciplinary context."
McLuhan embedded his teaching in literary history but also in the history of grammar, logic, rhetoric, and early theories of education. It was a history of inter-relationships between literature, the arts, and the everyday culture. Certainly a rare combination at the time and one that threatened the rather insular perspective of the English Department at the University of Toronto. When he arrived, McLuhan was the only lay member of the English Department, which primarily consisted of a handful of priests and three nuns.
The Marshall McLuhan that Donald Theall and his new bride Joan met in 1950 was a "charming, good looking, witty, fun-loving, highly intelligent devotee to the world of letters and traditional arts." More significant for what has come to be, notes Theall, McLuhan was a technophobe who often despised technology. In 1950 he did not own an automobile or a vacuum cleaner. And he did not type but used pen and ink and stored his notes in small boxes that had originally contained Laura Secord chocolates.
Toronto in the 50s personified McLuhan's technophobia. It was a boring, forgotten city of three-quarters of a million people. Theall calls it an "overgrown village" adding it was a "somewhat idyllic...still semi-colonial, marginally contemporary city...a sedate, stuffy city where on Sundays the major department store drew curtains across its windows, stores did not sell cigarettes, and people could not have wine or other alcoholic beverages with a restaurant meal ... There was no television; the only radio network, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC)...was government owned."
Another close friend and collaborator of McLuhan in Toronto of the 50s was Edmund "Ted" Carpenter. In his short enlightening McLuhan memoir "That Not-So-Silent Sea" in the Appendix of Theall's book, Edmund Carpenter remembers Toronto as a "depressing" place, "not a joyous place at all." It had a meanness which was visible everywhere - in its architecture, its food. McLuhan once described it to Carpenter as the "cringing, flunkey spirit of Canadian culture" and "its servant quarter snobbishness." Leopold Infeld, one of Carpenter's friends, suggested it was "perhaps the finest city in which to die, especially on Sunday afternoon when the transition between life and death would be continuous, painless and scarcely noticeable."

Theall's book is a master memoir of a time and a person that no other McLuhan biographer can come close to. It is not an easy book and those interested in reading a McLuhan for Dummies are advised to steer clear of this book. But this book is the real thing. I wrote a 6,000 word review of the book which was scheduled for publication in a publication that went out of business. For myself, it is a masterpiece from the apprentice of the master.

This is a Great Book!

Come on now, the title of the earlier review tells it all, except that Donald Theall isn't the one involved in the academic infighting.
It is also factually incorrect, since the entire sweep of McLuhan's work is more than amply covered in Theall's excellent biography.
As McLuhan's first PhD student Theall (along with McLuhan's first "partner" Ted Carpenter) presents a careful and nuanced perspective on the life and influences of McLuhan -- a rarity in a world where McLuhan has been used for everything short of selling pipe tobacco.
Let those who were outside McLuhan's life fight over him, Theall (and Carpenter) are clearly insiders and they give us the sharpest insight yet into the life of this towering intellect.

Everything about Marshall McLuhan is paradoxical. He knew this about himself and made much of it as an attention-getting strategy even to the point of appearing to be a trickster, an artist of sorts. Like a Dadaist or Surrealist, who were antagonistic toward middle class society in the avant garde Bohemian tradition of épater-le-bourgeois common to anyone wanting to gain broad attention, McLuhan `twitched the burghers' of establishment values far and wide almost globally. McLuhan noticed first and best how electric process was changing society and individuals.
I know of no one who understands McLuhan's electric and eclectic vision better than Donald Theall. As McLuhan's first and most important Ph.D. student and close associate from 1950-54, Theall was let in on the complex developments that produced the Explorations Group, the Ford Foundation study that led to Understanding Media, and the establishment of Toronto's Centre for Culture and Technology in the early sixties. Theall was privy to the developing relations between Harold Innis, Tom Easterbrook, Edmund Carpenter, Dorothy Lee and the rest of this historically significant association.
A true understanding of the coherence of McLuhan's vision is extremely rare. Theall brilliantly explains McLuhan's , unseemly, popularity with his understanding of the early virtualizing role of the intellectual in the electronic age:
Speaking about some remarks of the classical eighteenth-century father of capitalist economics, Adam Smith, ... McLuhan argues: "in this passage Smith does seem to sense that the new role of the intellectual is to tap the collective consciousness of `the vast multitudes that labour.' That is to say, the intellectual is no longer to direct individual perception and judgment but to explore and to communicate the massive unconscious of collective man. The intellectual is merely cast in the role of a primitive seer, vates or hero incongruously peddling his discoveries in a commercial market. (Theall. 208)

This is an example of the deep understanding that only Theall can bring to McLuhan's work. After McLuhan has described himself, to Ezra Pound, as "an intellectual thug,"
and gives his reason for being satirical and disinterested in society: "Everyman of goodwill is the enemy of society." (McLuhan, 1962, 269) This seems a deeply conservative view of one's fellow citizens - original sin as politics.
Theall sees McLuhan as a new kind of artist, who produces what Theall calls the "essai concrete," a poetic prose that captures the multiplexed meanings of the electric worldview. McLuhan , like Joyce is constantly punning - a strategy for multiplying meanings.. He was never definite or linear like a list of either/or oppositions (even though he was maddeningly dichotomous in some of his statements), so much as dedicated to a both/and approach to events - medium and message together.
Theall, is one of the few who know the deep scholarly background to McLuhan's critique of contemporary culture and he is incisive in his understanding of McLuhan's profound ambivalence in the face of traditional intellectual categories. McLuhan seems neither moralizing conservative nor countercultural guru. Being partly both, he transcended both in his electric odyssey, and toys with post-modernism by becoming beyond himself a virtual icon.
Theall, and very few others, perceives the darker side of McLuhan, his arcane knowledge which derives from his Cambridge Ph.D. studies in the hermetic tradition of the early grammarians - characters from Cicero to Blake through Cornelius Agrippa and Joachim de Floris. The Hermetic implications of the dissertation on Nashe show an earlier interest in such ideas.
In short, I know of no one better able to comment credibly on the multi-faceted genius of McLuhan: the artist, the satirist, the exploring pioneer of the electric world in all its complex diversity and amazing revelations.
Anyone who worked closely with Marshall McLuhan took their intellectual lumps. He was capable of great kindness and generosity but stood adamantly]
against any meddling with his work unless powerful new perceptions were presented to
him. Without mentioning Yeats and his famous reluctance to explain his poems because
("it tends to limit their suggestibility") McLuhan's position is deftly handled by Theall
who worked very closely with the master. "My canvasses are surrealist, and to call them theories is to miss my satirical intent altogether. As you will find in my literary essays, I can write the ordinary kind of prose any time I choose to do so." (Theall, 67)
The quite deliberate difficulties in McLuhan's writing are rooted in his taste for paradox and rhetorical play. The artful ambiguities that arise from this approach Theall is better than anyone to convey. He produces a brilliant insight: "The power of ambiguity to imply more than can be said and the power of juxtaposing items without comment to intensify observation are two strategies McLuhan had learned from Pound, Eliot and F.R. Leavis. (Theall., 68)
Some of Theall's best observations deal with McLuhan's proclivity for an allusive and aphoristic prose style that goes way back and is rooted in classical literature.
His knowledge of the obscurity of surrealism, modernist symbolisme, and high modernist post-symbolism ... reinforced and radicalized lessons he had learned earlier from Francis Bacon's observations about the advantages of a deliberately obscure, parabolic style - what Bacon called crypsis... . (Theall., 68)
The Virtual McLuhan has both scope and depth of understanding from perhaps the one scholar whose knowledge of McLuhan's genius is based on his own and his intimate almost filial relationship with the great men. About the Author

Jeff Walker, former chairman of the global private equity fund CCMP Capital, serves on the boards of New Profit, Berklee College of Music, the Morgan Library, the Millennium Development Goals Health Alliance, and other nonprofits. He has been an executive-in-residence at Harvard Business School and a lecturer at Harvard Kennedy School for nonprofit leadership.
 
Jennifer McCrea, a twenty-five-year fund-raising veteran, is a Senior Research Fellow at the Hauser Center for Nonprofit Organizations at Harvard University, where she leads the course in exponential fund-raising. She has worked with a diverse group of nonprofit organizations, including Millennium Promise, Acumen Fund, DonorsChoose.org, Grameen America, Teach for America, and many others.

From Tin Cups to True Partnerships - Turning "Development" Upside Down

OK. Let me be honest. I started on this journey pretty skeptically. As founder of a new nonprofit (Blue Engine) I was nervous about raising funds and didn't believe that these kinds of lessons could be taught in a conference, let alone a book. I was wrong, on both counts.

The Generosity Network is a practical story, intuitive, sensible, and narratively compelling; it also, somehow, manages to signal an underlying philosophy about how we might live fuller lives. Yes, I just wrote that, with a straight face.

The more I think about the lessons here, the more I realize that Jeff and Jennifer have crafted a handbook for how we might develop more real, authentic partnerships with one another, partnerships that keep meaning at the center of each and every encounter while exchanging multiple sources of value (energy, commitment, expertise, finances, fears, hopes...) in the process of building something big - something that could not become 'real' without both sides pitching in and getting neck-deep. This is the opposite of tin-cup supplicancy - it's about having fun, believing in the power of ideas, and coming together to make things happen.

Am I biased? Big time. The ideas have changed how I think about / practice leadership at Blue Engine, including how I train my staff, how we think about growing our network of partners, and how I approach every new partnership. If you're in the early stages of building an org, this is a must read. If you're training your development and communications staff on how to become more effective in their jobs - buy this book for them. If you're a philanthropist looking to upend some of your expectations for why partnerships work vs. stall, this could (?) challenge your worldview. And if you're a cagey veteran / experienced in this field and have thoughts that challenge the ideas presented here - CALL ME - I'd love to learn more.

This book rocks!!!

Fundraising is the engine that enables nonprofits to fulfill their important missions and yet fundraising is something that is profoundly misunderstood by so many people. I say this as someone who has been in the nonprofit field all my life. The authors of this book do a fantastic job of deconstructing traditional models of philanthropy. They get to the very heart of what giving is all about. Fundamental questions such as "Why do people give?" and "Why do people choose a life of service?" are rarely asked and yet they are central to what drives so much charitable work. This book helped me to tear down the artificial walls I had constructed in my own mind around "funders" and "practitioners" and gave me a different vantage point from which to move forward in my work. The authors take on this subject is nothing short of a paradigm shift and one that is sorely needed in order for service organizations to reach their fullest institutional potential and for the people who staff and fund those entities to reach their fullest personal potentials. This is the self-help book that every "donor" and "doer" has been waiting for, whether they realize it or not. The step by step, practical tools and insights furnished on its pages are a revelation that erase artificial divisions that keep resources from flowing to where they are needed and will forever change for the better the work of anyone and everyone who seeks to make our world a better place. This book is a new classic, a must read and a simple direct guide for how to change the world. And who doesn't want to change the world?

A Whole New Perspective on Fundraising

The Generosity Network was a thought-provoking book that gave me a whole new perspective on fundraising,from the transactional act of writing a check to the transformative act of guiding donors to look inside themselves and discover what they truly care about, as part of their personal journey to a more meaningful existence.

If the thought of fundraising raises your anxiety level because you equate it to selling something to somebody who really doesn't want to talk to you, this book is a must-read. You aren't selling something to somebody; you are helping people give as a means to self-discovery and enabling them to contribute to a dream. It is wonderful to see the gleam of excitement in the eyes of donors who are learning amazing new things about themselves through the experience of giving. Fundraising is much more than the act of asking for money; it is a personal invitation to join you in making a difference in the world.

Byas would activate a China contrast in his script to highlight Japan's progressive direction, picturing China as Asia's "Sick Man."
