Why the Church?, by Luigi Giussani

Giussani begins by focusing on the Church as a community composed of people who are aware of themselves as defined by the gift of the Spirit, from which they derive a new conception of existence, the fruit of conversion. He then describes the Church's developing self-awareness of its dual elements of the human and divine. Concerned with verifying the Church's claim to embody Christ, Giussani situates the locus of verification in human experience, arguing that a different type of life is born in those who try to live the life of the Church. Why the Church? is a seminal study that will engage both the scholar and the general reader.

What the Church is and What the Church is Not
By Dino D'Agata
In an age in which the perception of Catholic Christianity tends to be marred by ideological bias, it is refreshing to see a book that explicates the existence of the Church as the continuation of the presence of Jesus Christ in history. Giussani's goal makes clear that it is possible to have a concrete, historical relationship with Christ--not as a figure of our imagination or a product of wishful thinking (we know that would be as flawed as we ourselves are) but as God who is present and still acts through the Holy Spirit's use of men and women who are both saints and sinners. Giussani clarifies how it is that our individual temperaments and personalities can remain vehicles for the divine in time and space, and how throughout the history of revelation, those chosen to carry out God's plan in history, beginning with Abraham, Moses, David, were not perfect, but rather, were human beings as prone to weakness as we ourselves are. Nevertheless, this is only a part of the book's thesis. The entire work itself is a fitting and complete elucidation of Giussani's thought, beginning with "The Religious Sense" and continuing with "At the Origin of the Christian Claim." This is an author who brings the newness of his personal charism to truths that are eternal, and the mix of these two aspects of his work are both thrilling and life-giving.

A great book to enter into an understanding of the Church!
By Kenneth M. Genuard
This book explains that the Church is a life - not a place where people follow a bunch of old rules. Giussani brilliantly explains what constitutes this church, what its mission is, what it claims to be, and what it is not. A great book to enter into an understanding of what the Catholic Church really is, from someone on the inside of this life. If you are not a believer I would venture to say it would make you curious about this phenomenon that was started 2000 years ago by a carpenter's son from Nazareth. If already a believer, I think that it will educate you to a deeper understanding of what it is and expel some notions about it that are false. An indispensable book for any Catholic or any person who really wants to know what the church claims to be in history.

Stranger Music: Selected Poems and Songs, by Leonard Cohen

Stranger Music: Selected Poems and Songs celebrates the astonishing career of Leonard Cohen, revered around the world as one of the great visionaries, writers, performers, and most consistently daring songwriters.

Cohen’s career began in 1956 with the publication of Let Us Compare Mythologies, and he has since published eight books of poems – including The Spice-Box of Earth, Death of a Lady’s Man, and Book of Mercy – and has made numerous albums, becoming one of the most popular and influential artists in Canada, the United States, and Europe.

His first record, The Songs of Leonard Cohen, released in 1967, was a remarkable musical début and introduced some of his most famous songs, including “Suzanne,” “Hey, That’s No Way to Say Goodbye,” and “Sisters of Mercy.” From then, and with each subsequent album, he earned the status as one of the most dazzlingly literate songwriters of our time.

Stranger Music brings together for the first time a comprehensive selection of Leonard Cohen’s song lyrics and his poetry, including some poems not previously published. This landmark edition demonstrates the range and depth of Cohen’s work, revealing an extraordinary gift of language that speaks with rare clarity, passion, and timelessness.

From Publishers Weekly
Cohen is probably best known as the writer of the lyrics for the song "Suzanne," made famous by Judy Collins, but has written a great many other songs, too, as well as poetry and prose poetry not set to music. In reading through this generous selection, one often hears the ghost of musical accompaniment, and sometimes its actual presence is missed. The writing alone, forthright in its rhythms, plain of speech, often rhymed, and almost immediately accessible, seems well suited to the ears of a live audience. So fans of the songs will be in luck, here; but readers who prefer slow subtleties, or a kind of poetry that gradually expands in meaning on rereading, or ambitious craft, won't find it in a piece like "For Anne," which begins "With Annie gone, / Whose eyes to compare / With the morning sun?" Cohen's writing is oral in flavor, and asks us to "read" it mainly by hearing it. This works to the disadvantage of a book, where words stay put and aren't sung.

From Library Journal
To appreciate these poems, we must suspend any notions of poetry as an intellectual art form and approach this work as one would a rack of greeting cards. Rhyme abounds, frankly showing Cohen at his best because it holds his didactic nature in check. Although there are few surprises, such as the wonderful early poem "Beneath My Hands," the songs from Cohen's first album, written over 30 years ago, are still his finest displays of outrageous yet stunning imagery. The presence of woman as lover, prostitute, or slave, celebrated in these early songs, continues into his latest work, making over 400 pages seem remarkably flimsy. That these women never seem to exist as individuals will possibly offend readers with a feminist bent. Yet despite almost pornographic descriptions, this Jewish poet still will not write outG-d's name. The Buddhist element in his 1984 poetry collection, Book of Mercy , is now scarcely evident. Despite its flaws, this book is recommended for popular collections.

From Booklist
Cohen is known best as a songwriter--everyone's heard "Suzanne"--and a performer, but he is also a poet with eight collections to his credit. This fine volume brings together a great number of Cohen's striking poems and memorable song lyrics from 1956 to the present, including lyrics from his newest album, The Future, which is one his most powerful and exciting releases. Reading Cohen is just as pleasurable as listening to him, especially since his writing has an aural energy. Cohen is direct and precise, a no-fuss-no-muss sort of poet who gets the maximum meaning out of homey words and an invigorating jolt out of clashing images. By turns caustic and charming, Cohen is often caught between the magnetic poles of love and art, claiming in an early poem, "The reason I write/is to make something/as beautiful as you are." He's too experienced to be truly romantic, but he still longs for innocence and purity and frequently writes about faith and redemption. Politics creep in when Cohen muses over class differences and war, but he most often focuses on the subtle palette of emotions from loneliness to passion, bitter humor to serenity. Donna Seaman

Fantastic Collection & Perfect 1st Cohen Book to Buy
By Carey
-
One of my top gift items: Turn people on to this book. It is a terrific, full anthology that includes much out-of-print material. The poetry is stylistically wide in scope (from how-did-he-do that perfect to sparse, intense, free-verse); it has unique, emotionally-driven language choices, rhythm and content. Its tenor is lugubrious, and its subject matter tends toward sex and religion.

This, as opposed to his individual books of poetry: The individual books are typically short and some are wonderful -- each is very different, thus liked by different tastes. If you don't own any Cohen books, buy this first -- it's got great poems (plus clips of prose, as from "Beautiful Losers"). The chapters are laid out by book and album title (lyrics are here, too); therefore, if/when you want another book after, you will know which one. One thing I don't like about it is the change in poem titles from their originals.

This books ends when Cohen is in his 50's, at least in the previously unpublished poems at the end -- so, before the monastery part of his life, though religion is well part of him (he is Orthodox Jewish and views his Buddhism as compatible with his Judaism). I'm not much a fan of his post-monastery work, and if I have one regret it's that I discovered Leonard Cohen within the past ten years, and never got to see him live.

Know, too, that Cohen was a published poet--well-known in Canada--before he recorded music. He began to play guitar while reading poetry -- it went over well!

amazing, haunting, honest poetry & lyrics from a genius
By Carol C.
Even if you aren't familiar with Cohen as a musician, you've probably heard his music -- "Suzanne" (who "takes you down by her place near the river"), "Bird on a Wire," "Famous Blue Raincoat," "Joan of Ark." Rufus Wainright sang a haunting version of "Hallelujah" on the soundtrack of Schreck. John Cale did an earlier cover of "Hallelujah." I listened to Hallelujah over & over again, hitting the move back button on my CD player time after time. Later, I discovered that Hallelujah was penned by Leonard Cohen. Interesting -- I'd never heard of Leonard Cohen. Out of curiosity, I bought a couple of his CDs. I can't stop listening to them.
I bought this book because I wanted to see the lyrics written out (obviously, this is not an endorsement for the rather lame liner notes on the CDS I bought, which do not include lyrics). This treasure trove contains so much more here than the lyrics to the familiar songs. This isn't a feel-good collection; rather, it's a feel-alive collection, piercing and painful and brutal in its honesty. Cohen's poetry is perfect for when you want to crawl into yourself & wallow in introspection. This book contains 401 pages of poetry -- deeply spiritual, often sexual, sometimes funny, usually haunting. Most of the poems dig at your inner core, causing you to think. I am so amazed at the breadth of this man's talent, at his insight and intelligence and honesty. The poems are real rather than pretty, troubled rather than calm.
If you like Bob Dylan/Joan Baez type of music, you'll like Cohen's poetry. If you've read (and enjoyed) the poetry but haven't yet heard the music, do yourself a big favor and check out one of his CDs.

Amazing, tugs at your soul
By Bill R. Moore
Leonard Cohen is... I cannot find a single word to describe him. He is enigmatic. He is eclectic. He is iconoclastic. He is all of these things, and many, many more. Read this book and you will understand. This book includes a wide variety of his poems throughout the years, including selections from all 8 of his original volumes of poetry (The Energy of Slaves and Death of A Lady's Man are particularly well represented), as well as poems from his first anthology, selections from his novel Beautiful Losers, and 11 previously unpublished poems. Also included are lyrics to songs from all of his wonderful albums, many of them nicely represented, including The Future, his most recent album, which has all of it's Cohen-penned lyrics included here. These are particularly convenient as Cohen's albums, sadly, have been virtually ignored by record companies and during their re-packaging onto CD most of them do not include lyrics. This is a monumental collection, over 400 pages and including several hundred poems, some of which are not available elsewhere, and almost all of which are very hard to find at any rate. This is an absolute must for a Leonard Cohen fan. He is perhaps my favorite poet, his words tug at your heartstrings like so many other poets are claimed to be able to do, but which few can. His writing has always been honest, he's not fooling anybody, and these poems and lyrics touch you deep in your soul. Cohen strikes a chord. This is masterly, masterly writing. If you are a fan of Leonard Cohen's music, then you owe it to yourself to further your experience by buying this book. I cannot give it a higher reccommendation.

Black Code: Surveillance, Privacy, and the Dark Side of the Internet, by Ronald J. Deibert

Cyberspace is all around us. We depend on it for everything we do. We have reengineered our business, governance, and social relations around a planetary network unlike any before it. But there are dangers looming, and malign forces are threatening to transform this extraordinary domain.

In Black Code, Ronald J. Deibert, a leading expert on digital technology, security, and human rights, lifts the lid on cyberspace and shows what’s at stake for Internet users and citizens. As cyberspace develops in unprecedented ways, powerful agents are scrambling for control. Predatory cyber criminal gangs such as Koobface have made social media their stalking ground. The discovery of Stuxnet, a computer worm reportedly developed by Israel and the United States and aimed at Iran’s nuclear facilities, showed that state cyberwar is now a very real possibility. Governments and corporations are in collusion and are setting the rules of the road behind closed doors.

This is not the way it was supposed to be. The Internet’s original promise of a global commons of shared knowledge and communications is now under threat.

Drawing on the first-hand experiences of one of the most important protagonists in the battle — the Citizen Lab and its global network of frontline researchers, who have spent more than a decade cracking cyber espionage rings and uncovering attacks on citizens and NGOs worldwide — Black Code takes readers on a fascinating journey into the battle for cyberspace. Thought-provoking, compelling, and sometimes frightening, it is a wakeup call to citizens who have come to take the Internet for granted. Cyberspace is ours, it is what we make of it, Deibert argues, and we need to act now before it slips through our grasp.

Review
“Black Code is terrifying. It effortlessly chronicles threats ranging from individual privacy to national security…[highlighting] the shadowy, lucrative war online, behind closed doors and in the halls of power, which threatens to control, censor, and spy on us, or worse.”
—National Post

“Gripping and absolutely terrifying. . . . Black Code is a manifesto for the 21st-century form of network stewardship, a sense of shared responsibility toward our vital electronic water supply. It is a timely rallying cry, and sorely needed.”
—Cory Doctorow, Globe and Mail

“Ron Deibert is an excellent guide to the fascinating and disturbing world of cyber security.”
—Joseph S. Nye, Jr., Distinguished Service Professor, Harvard, and author of The Future of Power

"For more than a decade, Ron Deibert's Citizen Lab has been at the forefront of decoding actions both crude and subtle to disrupt Internet access and usage. A path from the Dalai Lama's hacked laptop to a worldwide espionage ring is but one tale of many of the Lab's singular exploits -- now gathered here in this compelling volume that chronicles the ongoing wars amidst the Internet's rise."
—Jonathan Zittrain, Professor of Law and Professor of Computer Science, Harvard University, and author of The Future of the Internet -- And How to Stop It

“At a time when autocrats, criminal gangs and others are trying to control and pervert the use of cyberspace, Ron Deibert’s Black Code rings like a fire-bell in the night, warning us that the price of a new global commons of shared knowledge and connectivity is vigilance in defense of free expression and the rule of law. Anyone who cares about the future of democracy needs to read this timely and most important book.”
—Carl Gershman, President, National Endowment for Democracy

“Black Code stimulated my thinking about the potential for making the Internet a much safer place.”
—Vint Cerf, Internet Pioneer

Understand the deep story on NSA cyber spying
By N. J. Roese
This is not a book by a journalist who needs to ask experts to figure out the deep story. This is a book by a true expert who has spearheaded some of the most powerful investigations into internet spying. If you want some depth and perspective on the NSA scandal, look no further. Told in an engaging style, this is an essential update from the front lines of cyber crime and cyber warfare.

a meticulous but accessible examination of threats to Internet stability / security
By Adam Thierer
Ron Deibert's book is a meticulous examination of the "malicious threats that are growing from the inside out" on the Internet and which "threaten to destroy the fragile ecosystem we have come to take for granted." Deibert is worried about the way various forces and factors are working together to undermine online stability and security, and even delegitimize liberal democracy itself.

The clear and colloquial tone that Deibert employs in the text helps make these arcane Internet security issues interesting and accessible. Some chapters of the book almost feel like they were pulled from the pages of techno-thriller, complete with villainous characters, unexpected plot twists, and shocking conclusions. "Cyber crime has become one of the world's largest growth businesses," Deibert notes and his chapters focus on many prominent recent examples.

Deibert is uniquely qualified to narrate this tale not just because he is a gifted story-teller but also because he and his colleagues at The Citizen Lab at the Univ. of Toronto have occasionally been major players in this drama as they have researched and uncovered various online vulnerabilities affecting millions of people across the globe.

What Deibert is grappling with in this book is the same fundamental problem that has long plagued the Internet: How do you preserve the benefits associated with the most open and interconnected "network of networks" the world has ever known while also remedying the various vulnerabilities and pathologies created by that same openness and interconnectedness?

The only problem with Deibert's book is that he does such a nice job itemizing and describing these security vulnerabilities that by the time the reader wades through 230 pages and nears the end of the book, they are left in a highly demoralized state, searching for some hope and a concrete set of practical solutions. Unfortunately, they won't find an abundance of either in Deibert's brief closing chapter. Deibert does offer a principle vision of distributed security and digital stewardship to counter the growing push by governments to "clamp down" of cyberspace, but his approach is highly aspirational in nature and lacks concrete details. Deibert would have been wise to spend a bit more time developing this alternative "bottom-up" vision of how online security should work and bolstering it with case studies of how it already works well in practice today.

Regardless, Ron Deibert's "Black Code" is a sweeping exploration of these issues that makes substantial contributions to the field of Internet policy studies. It is an excellent resource for students, scholars, and policy wonks alike.

A Timely Look at Privacy in a Connected World
By Evan Dingman
The privacy vs security debate in cyberspace has quickly emerged at the forefront of political discussion. News feeds are constantly overwhelmed with headlines of new data breaches, acts of cyber espionage, and malware exploits every day. Clearly, appropriate and timely action must be taken, but what exactly does that entail and who are the key players in such a solution? Ronald Deibert attempts to answer this and many more questions in his latest book, Black Code.

Delivered like a novel or a great narrative at times, Black Code is a gripping page-turner that provides first and secondhand accounts on a wide variety of conflicts in cyberspace. China's cyber espionage of the exiled Tibetan government through the DarkComet RAT and koobface, the Russian-based botnet created for the sole purpose of enabling Facebook click fraud are both thoroughly reported. The diversity and quantity of major cyber events covered is significant and despite having read numerous books on the subject, I found myself learning a substantial amount.

Some of my discontent with Black Code has to do with the constant nods to The Citizen Lab. Given the author's affiliation, I'd consider this to be standard affair and not much of a detriment, but it occasionally gets noticeable enough to distract from the actual content. Also, I was somewhat put off by the constant aggression towards government officials throughout. Surely disagreement can be had without attacks on physical appearances and other such tactics?

My minor complaints aside, Black Code is engaging, well written, and goes into more detail on a wider range of cyber events than any other book I've read on the topic. If you're even slightly interested in getting a better grasp on the complexities of the privacy vs security debate from the pro-privacy side then I'd highly recommend adding Black Code to your bookshelf.

David Lewis (Philosophy Now), by Daniel Nolan

David Lewis's work is of fundamental importance in many areas of philosophical inquiry and there are few areas of Anglo-American philosophy where his impact has not been felt. Lewis's philosophy also has a rare unity: his views form a comprehensive philosophical system, answering a broad range of questions in metaphysics, philosophy of mind, philosophy of language, philosophy of action and many other areas. This breadth of Lewis's work, however, has meant that it is difficult to know where to start in Lewis's work and a casual reader may often miss some of the illuminating connections between apparently quite disparate pieces of Lewis's work. This book aims to make this body of work more accessible to a general philosophical readership, while also providing a unified overview of the many contributions Lewis has made to contemporary Anglo-American philosophy.

Review
"An excellent textbook for upper level classes on metaphysics or philosophy of mind ... the book should also have value for professional philosophers because of how it draws out the connections between Lewis's views ... and the critical element of Nolan's exposition should be helpful at points even to experts." - Mind "Daniel Nolan has performed an excellent feat in making accessible one of the deepest thinkers in recent philosophy. He has produced a book that can introduce students and non-specialist philosophers to the range and importance of Lewis's work. This book is a major new aid to understanding Lewis." - Stephen Mumford, University of Nottingham "essential reading for specialists and non-specialists alike in metaphysics, mind, epistemology and language. Nolan has given us a pellucid, lively and accessible overview of the diverse strands of Lewis's work. I know of no other treatment of Lewis that is as useful, comprehensive and well written." - L. A. Paul, University of Arizona "Daniel Nolan has the breadth of knowledge and technical facility to produce this first-rate, user-friendly study of the Lewisian system. In doing so, he has provided a great service to both specialists and non-specialists alike." - Alan Hajek, Australian National University

Luckily It's Quite Good
By Not me, but somebody else
If you want some thorough and in-depth help understanding Lewis, this is currently the only going concern (sounds like something Lewis would say), and so we should count ourselves as lucky that it is so good. And if you want to understand Lewis, you will probably need some help. Though Lewis' writing style is clear, energetic, and funny, making him a breeze to read, picking up something he has written is like jumping into the middle of an email thread on an esoteric topic between people who have been discussing it for decades. He does not provide the context himself for why someone who hasn't been already thinking about a particular topic for years should care about it. This is, of course, true of a great many philosophers, but Lewis's breezy style makes it particularly stark.

So, thank the Humean mosaic for Daniel Nolan. He doesn't bring the discourse quite down to the level of an average intelligent person, but he does pull it back enough that a person willing to put in the work can get a foothold on Lewis. If you need a suggestion, I'd say start with Nolan, read through chapter 3, then start Lewis' On The Plurality of Worlds, then go back and re-read some of Nolan, then some of Lewis, etc. etc. If plurality of worlds isn't your specific interest, then do this for whatever is. Also, Nolan's chapter 9, on Lewis' overall philosophical method, is an essential part of this starting process, to be read after you've read a little Lewis, even though it's at the end of Nolan's book.

Review
“[A] dramatic tale of grit and stamina.”
— Hamilton Spectator

From the Inside Flap
The biennial Around Alone yacht race is the most thrilling adventure in the world for the sailors passionate enough to undertake it. It's a two-class solo race that starts and ends in Newark, New Jersey, with stops in England, South Africa, New Zealand, and Brazil, and it is as tough in its way as the non-stop race, the Vendee Globe. In 2002, thirteen sailors competed, some of them professional sailors, well funded by corporate sponsors, and some of them adventurers who sacrificed almost everything to enter the race. Among the adventurers wasDerek Hatfield, a former fraud-squad Mountie, whose forty-foot "Spirit of Canada had cost him almost everything he had.
The race takes sailors through the wild storms of the Bay of Biscay, the frustrating and infamous Doldrums, the angry Southern Ocean, and the treacherous seas off Cape Horn, the southern tip of South America. All of them dangerous waters that stretched the sailors' abilities to the limit - and beyond. Hatfield's "Spirit of Canada became the plucky Little Boat That Could when it lost its mast in rounding Cape Horn.
In this nail-biting account of the race, Adam Mayers brings to life the joys and the agonies of racing alone - and the dreams that drive these men and women to sail around the world solo.

About the Author
As a journalist with the Toronto Star, Adam Mayers provided comprehensive coverage of the Around Alone race. He is the author of three books.

The riveting story of a fast-paced, around-the-world race
By Midwest Book Review
Sea Of Dreams: Racing Alone Around The World In A Small Boat, by Adam Mayers is the riveting story of a fast-paced, around-the-world race for the "Around Alone" yacht race. Derek Hatfield in his yacht "Spirit of Canada" raced against twelve others around the world, beginning in New York Harbor, with stops in England, South Africa, New Zealand, and Brazil, and finally ending in Newport, Rhode Island. Sea Of Dreams is an amazing tale and very highly recommended reading, especially for anyone in search of a gripping and nautically inclined true-life story of a fearless pursuit of a dangerous race on the high seas.

Sea of Dreams vs Godforsaken Sea
By John Aubrey
This a great book, about the other solo around the world race. It reads like a thriller and taught me a lot of things I didn't know about solo sailing. Derek Lundy's Godforsaken Sea which was about the 96 Vendee was gripping and so is this one about the 02 Around Alone when the Cdn. Derek Hatfield was rolled over at the Horn and Brad Van Liew who lives in Charleston set new speed records for the race. His race was just as amazing. The other American guy Tim Kent was also a great story, getting stronger and stronger as the race went on.

A must for yacht racers
By T. Montague-Jones
This is the most brilliant book I have read detailing an account of offshore single-handed racing. I couldn't put it down. The book flows from one event to the next and fills the reader with the details experienced and lessons learnt along the way.

Cree Narrative: Expressing the Personal Meanings of Events (Carleton Library Series), by Richard J. Preston

Based primarily on the oral accounts of John Blackned, Cree Narrative offers a detailed account of traditional Cree society. The result is an integrated picture of Cree thought, feelings, and beliefs relating to living on and with the land. For this expanded reissue of his pioneering work in cognitive anthropology, Richard Preston has added four new chapters. He contextualizes his original research and provides historical and social context for the Waskaganish area during the time of his fieldwork in the 1960s. He also includes a biography of John Blackned and a new selection of Blackned's stories that vividly portray Cree experience at the end of the fur trade period in the early nineteen hundreds. To step into the sensibility of another culture and portray it wisely and with love is a rare accomplishment. Richard Preston achieved this in the original edition of Cree Narrative, published in a limited fashion by Canada's National Museum of Man in 1975, and continues it here.

Review
"Preston was very much ahead of his time and his work represents one of the main thrusts of cultural anthropology as it is now taught and researched. His approach weaves a comprehensive, integrated overview of Cree thought - there is no one else the researcher can consult for this perspective. Even for the Crees, Preston's work is a repository of lost knowledge as he conducted his study on the eve of the their making significant changes to their society by signing the James Bay Agreement in 1975." Toby Morantz, Anthropology, McGill University ----- "An extremely important book." American Anthropologist

About the Author
Preston is professor emeritus of anthropology, McMaster University.

Can't recommend this book highly enough
By Matthew L. Schaut
Can't recommend this book highly enough. The stories let you know what it is like to survive as a hunting people. The daily overwhelming importance of finding food, the possibility of starvation, the tragic consequences of psychotic disorders. Preston clears up slot of the nonsense bandied about by less clear minded ethnologists about windigos and the Cree supposedly living in terror of their environment, showing instead how their immersion in the necessities of survival in the natural environment they found themselves led to a serious, competent, matter-of-fact engagement with their reality, but not abject fear. I'd be afraid, abject, and I would have little chance of survival. For the Cree, they are home, and from birth learn what they will need to know and just get down to the business of it.

Farewell to God: My Reasons for Rejecting the Christian Faith, by Charles Templeton

For more than twenty years, Charles Templeton was a major figure in the church in Canada and the United States. During the 1950s, he and Billy Graham were the two most successful exponents of mass evangelism in North America. Templeton spoke nightly to stadium crowds of up to thirty thousand people.

However, increasing doubts about the validity of the Old Testament and the teachings of the Christian church finally brought about a crisis in his faith and in 1957 he resigned from the ministry.

In Farewell to God, Templeton speaks out about his reasons for the abandonment of his faith. In straightforward language, Templeton deals with such subjects as the Creation fable, racial prejudice in the Bible, the identity of Jesus of Nazareth, Jesus’ alienation from his family, the second-class status of women in the church, the mystery of evil, the illusion that prayer works, why there is suffering and death, and the loss of faith in God.

He concludes with a positive personal statement: “I Believe.”

Rare Intellectual Honesty
By Avid Reader
In this age of political, economic, ideological and religious marketing it is refreshing to come across such intellectual honesty and personal convictions. He is essentially saying that the philosophical edifice of his previous life was based on what he has come to believe is a lie. Unlike many unbelievers, he does not yell or rail against believers or the Church as an institution, not does he seem to have any scores to settle. Instead, his tone is one of sadness and regret, personal remorse and respect for those who keep the faith that sustained him and has millions of others. He understands the allure of religion, particularly it a social setting. It is one thing not to attend a church; it is quite something else to declare one's opposition to religious teachings.

This is not a literary masterpiece but it is a searching tale of how individual thinking, reason and analysis can lead someone to reject the very foundations of his life. Something of this order occurred when the USSR ceased and honest Socialists admitted that their vision of economics, history and human motivations were abysmally wrong. But religion touches the soul in ways that ideology cannot since it concerns not only the here but the hereafter. While for some, politics is simply another religion, to the vast majority there is a distinct difference.

Templeton traces his life as a convert, scholar and preacher. It appears (and I suspect) there was always a seed of doubt that he sought to banish through good deeds, prayer and simply not entertaining the idea that Christianity is an inspiring fraud. Yet it is our mental faculties which ultimately propel us forward, giving rise to inventions that save labor and pain, to medicines that heal bodies and to material benefits that provide us time to muse on the things of the spirit.

One reason why his experience is rare is that few take the time to study the origins of their religion, read critical analyses but simply accept current teachings wihout wondering how they came to be. He had to overcome shame, a sense of personal failure, the task of telling those he loved that he had made such a decision and yet...he seems to have been set free. A great read.

When a believer no longer believes....
By A Customer
Believers and non-believers have long endured the most frustrating of catch 22's; it is no easier to prove God exists than to prove that he doesn't. I enjoyed Templeton's approach simply because it incorporates common sense in a diplomatic and eloquent vein. Templeton is not attempting to slander any particular faith or to cater to biblical intellects nor does he seem to associate his views with those of a die hard atheist. He, instead, manages to engage his readers in a logical discussion, a 'thinking out loud' kind of conversation that easily intrigues us. I found his questions to be thought provoking and his facts to be credible. Personally, I am far more interested in the views of a former Fundamentalist turned non-believer than I would be of a current non-believer who remains one. Templeton gives us a back seat view that others cannot as easily provide. He poses observations that both annoy and entertain (ie. was God a racist? why the disparity of two versions of creation in the same book of Genesis?) The author opens his heart to the reader and candidly discusses his own deep, personal faith as a young man and the sometimes lonely journey he undertook to the truth. He seems to regard his personal epiphany as much a disappointment as a triumph. Read this book, regardless of your personal convictions! Give yourself the benefit of a well-honed, logical and entertaining argument before you determine your position. It is well worth the time and effort and Mr. Templeton makes the journey a peaceful one!

Best layman's first critique of Christianity.
By Mark I. Vuletic
Charles Templeton's FAREWELL TO GOD is the best layman's first introduction to the problems of orthodox Christianity I have yet read.
The book is divided into forty-six brief and nontechnical chapters, ideal for the average Mortimer or Jacqueline on the street, who can spare no more than a few minutes a day studying something as unimportant as religion.
Although Templeton covers many subjects, he places heavy emphasis upon the Bible. This will be informative for the average Christian, who is likely to have only passing familiarity with most of the Good Book, and will no doubt be astounded to discover some of its contents. In his chapters on the Bible, Templeton usually spends a few pages recounting a story from the book, and then comments upon its implausibility or barabarity. The commentaries are, for the most part, quite obvious, but their value for novices should not be underestimated -- tradition has built such an aura of sacred immunity around the Bible, that most people are in desperate need of someone willing to call a spade a spade.
It is important to emphasize the introductory nature of the book. Templeton does not by any means come close to offering the last word on anything he discusses. He does not even attempt to interact with standard apologetic responses to the kinds of worries he raises. There are also a handful of errors in Farewell to God, such as the staggering mischaracterization of atheism as the claim to absolute certainty (17), without argument (18), that there is no god, or the glaring self-contradiction in which Templeton denies the Bethlehem birth of Jesus in one chapter (85), and presupposes it in another (96). Seasoned fundamentalist apologists, then, will surely consider Farewell to God naive and simplistic (though they will hardly object to the caricature of atheism). Experienced infidels will likewise learn nothing new from Templeton, but they will be more liable to appreciate his eloquence and pointedness. Infidels will also recognize the great value of a forceful initial critique of Christianity: it is surely a good thing for novices not to get bogged down in endless rebuttal and counter-rebuttal during their first steps; for novices, accessibility is the key, and Templeton more than delivers on that count.
In short, I heartily recommend FAREWELL TO GOD as informative to anyone who has yet to read a critique of Christianity, and as enjoyable to experienced religious skeptics. Dedicated fundamentalists, however, should not read it without an ample supply of blood-pressure medicine.
