The Lamp at Noon and Other Stories (New Canadian Library), by Sinclair Ross

Sinclair Ross’ 1941 novel As For Me and My House is a masterpiece of Canadian literature, a stunning evocation of the Prairies and their inhabitants during the Depression of the Thirties. With The Lamp at Noon and Other Stories, an original New Canadian Library collection, Ross reveals further dimensions of his fictional universe.

A woman’s impulsive infidelity leads to tragedy. A sudden hailstorm destroys hope. A boy learns to conquer a beautiful wild horse. A little girl dreams about a circus. Against the isolated, haunting landscapes of summer droughts and winter blizzards, the men and women of Ross’ stories grapple with fate against almost impossible odds. Marked by a legacy of pride that will not suffer defeat, Ross’ unyielding characters are cut off from their loved ones by obstinacy and defiance. Their tragedy is not that they suffer, but that they suffer alone.

The sensitivity, compassion, and subtlety with which Ross portrays human aspirations and failings remain to this day unequalled in Canadian fiction.

A sad, sad story...
By cherlis@aol.com
Terribly, terribly sad. The lamp becomes the framework, the stage for this story. There is the feeling of coming full circle, and of defeat; resignation. There is a certain desperation in the story that is depressing and overwhelming. Not an enjoyable read, but an engrossing one.

Roughing It in the Bush, by Susanna Moodie

When Roughing It in the Bush was published in 1852, it created an international sensation, not only for Susanna Moodie’s “glowing narrative of personal incident,” but also for her firm determination to puncture the illusions European land-agents were circulating about life in Canada. This frank and fascinating chronicle details her harsh – and humorous – experiences in homesteading with her family in the woods of Upper Canada.

Part documentary, part psychological parable, Roughing It in the Bush is, above all, an honest account of how one woman coped not only in a new world, but, more importantly, with herself.

The New Canadian Library edition is an unabridged reprint of the complete original text.

About the Author
Susanna Moodie was born Susanna Strickland in Bungay, Suffolk, England, in 1803. The sixth and final daughter of a retired dock manager, she grew up in a middle-class family that encouraged the children in reading and in writing. Her sisters Agnes and Elizabeth would write Lives of the Queens of England and other biographies of the aristocracy, her sister Catharine Parr (later Traill) would emigrate to Canada and write several natural history books, and her brother Samuel, another emigrant to Canada, would write of the settler's life. Susanna’s juvenilia include poetry and many fiction tales for young adults.

In 1831 Susanna Strickland married John Wedderburn Dunbar Moodie, a military officer who had returned to England from South Africa to explore publication projects and to find a wife. A year later, they emigrated to Upper Canada (Ontario). In Flora Lyndsay (1854), Susanna Moodie gives a fictionalized account of the family’s move to Canada, concluding with the journey up the Saint Lawrence River.

For their first seventeen months in Canada, the Moodies lived on cleared farmland near Port Hope. In 1834 they moved to a bush farm in Douro Township north of Peterborough and near the homes of Samuel Strickland and Catharine Parr Traill. The farm was the Moodie home for five years, and Roughing It in the Bush (1852), describes their life in these two backwoods areas.

From 1837 to 1839 Dunbar Moodie served in the Upper Canada militia, and in 1839 he was appointed Sheriff of Victoria District (later Hastings County). His family moved to Belleville in 1840, their home until his death in 1869. After her husband’s death Susanna Moodie spent her time with her various grown children and with her sister Catharine.

Susanna Moodie died in Toronto, Ontario, in 1885.

The early part of the winter of 1837, a year never to be forgotten in the annals of Canadian history, was very severe….

The morning of the seventh was so intensely cold that everything liquid froze in the house. The wood that had been drawn for the fire was green, and it ignited too slowly to satisfy the shivering impatience of women and children; I vented mine in audibly grumbling over the wretched fire, at which I in vain endeavoured to thaw frozen bread, and to dress crying children….

After dressing, I found the air so keen that I could not venture out without some risk to my nose, and my husband kindly volunteered to go in my stead.

I had hired a young Irish girl the day before. Her friends were only just located in our vicinity, and she had never seen a stove until she came to our house. After Moodie left, I suffered the fire to die away in the Franklin stove in the parlour, and went into the kitchen to prepare bread for the oven.

The girl, who was a good-natured creature, had heard me complain bitterly of the cold, and the impossibility of getting the green wood to burn, and she thought that she would see if she could not make a good fire for me and the children, against my work was done. Without saying one word about her intention, she slipped out through a door that opened from the parlour into the garden, ran round to the wood-yard, filled her lap with cedar chips, and, not knowing the nature of the stove, filled it entirely with the light wood.

Before I had the least idea of my danger I was aroused from the completion of my task by the crackling and roaring of a large fire, and a suffocating smell of burning soot. I looked up at the kitchen cooking-stove. All was right there. I knew I had left no fire in the parlour stove; but not being able to account for the smoke and smell of burning, I opened the door, and to my dismay found the stove red-hot, from the front plate to the topmost pipe that let out the smoke through the roof.

My first impulse was to plunge a blanket, snatched from the servant’s bed, which stood in the kitchen, into cold water. This I thrust into the stove, and upon it I threw water, until all was cool below. I then ran up to the loft, and by exhausting all the water in the house, even to that contained in the boilers upon the fire, contrived to cool down the pipes which passed through the loft. I then sent the girl out of doors to look at the roof, which, as a very deep fall of snow had taken place the day before, I hoped would be completely covered, and safe from all danger of fire.

She quickly returned, stamping and tearing her hair, and making a variety of uncouth outcries, from which I gathered that the roof was in flames.

Saqiyuq: Stories from the Lives of Three Inuit Women (McGill-Queen's Native and Northern Series), by Nancy Wachowich

A grandmother, daughter, and granddaughter take us on a remarkable journey in which the cycles of life - childhood, adolescence, marriage, birthing and child rearing - are presented against the contrasting experiences of three successive generations. Their memories and reflections give us poignant insight into the history of the people of the new territory of Nunavut. Apphia Awa, who was born in 1931, experienced the traditional life on the land while Rhoda Katsak, Apphia's daughter, was part of the transitional generation who were sent to government schools. In contrast to both, Sandra Katsak, Rhoda's daughter, has grown up in the settlement of Pond Inlet among the conveniences and tensions of contemporary northern communities - video games and coffee shops but also drugs and alcohol. During the last years of Apphia's life Rhoda and Sandra began working to reconnect to their traditional culture and learn the art of making traditional skin clothing. Through the storytelling in Saqiyuq, Apphia, Rhoda, and Sandra explore the transformations that have taken place in the lives of the Inuit and chart the struggle of the Inuit to reclaim their traditional practices and integrate them into their lives. Nancy Wachowich became friends with Rhoda Katsak and her family during the early 1990s and was able to record their stories before Apphia's death in 1996. Saqiyuq will appeal to everyone interested in the Inuit, the North, family bonds, and a good story.

Review
"A moving account of three generations in the arctic that sends a fascinating mixture of messages about its hardships and it riches." Hugh Brody "In this wonderful tapestry of stories, cast by memory and illuminated by wisdom, there is a mystery that sustains a powerful Inuit unity. These three life histories - elusive as the Arctic itself - shine as brightly as constellations in the long winter darkness." Canadian Geographic "An absorbing collection of stories from the lives of three Inuit women." MacLeans "An enthralling series of stories ... readers will take great delight in following the footsteps of the storytellers as they weave their way from tale to tale, some filled with sorrow, others with bewilderment and joy." loved it..reading it again
By lissa
this was a really interesting book. It shares the three generations of this family with a heavy emphasis on the times before town living. It sensitively answered alot of questions I had about life "on the land" and smoothly moves the reader into the life of the present day inuit. I purchased this book to understand the people of the north whose life I currently share living in their communities. Highly recommend

A rare, priceless book that puts modern life into stark proportion while entertaining effortlessly!
By Janet
Who, other than the actual native people of this land, could even imagine what life in this seemingly impossible environment entailed? Reading this book is an eye-opener, showing just how a harsh world commands the culture and sacrifices of those it surrounds. Few of us could survive in such a place, let alone thrive over centuries! I've learned to have an endless admiration for the people of the far northern regions; with their extreme hardiness and sheer, day-to-day courage. A fascinating book and a vitally important one.

A stunning, down-to-earth tale of the modern Arctic lifestyle
By Trevor Ycas
This work is powerful, introducing the reader to modern Inuit life, while remembering, literally, how it became that way. Proceeding through the stories of three generations of women, details of life ranging from chewing caribou skins to soften them to broken ski-doos (snowmobiles) and unexpectedly melting ice emerge. This is a unique multi-generational portrait of the last century of Inuit life. A quick-read, this is highly recommended!

Gretzky to Lemieux: The Story of the 1987 Canada Cup, by Ed Willes

Gretzky, Lemieux, Messier, Coffey, Fuhr, all on the same team — in their prime. The greatest collection of hockey talent ever assembled, playing the games of their lives.

Three epic 6-5 contests between Canada and the Soviet Union decided the ’87 Canada Cup.

Canada evened the series, after the Soviets won Game 1, when Gretzky’s fifth assist of the game set up Lemieux’s hat trick, ending Game 2 in double overtime. Game 2 is widely considered one of the greatest hockey games ever played.

With time running out in Game 3, after Canada battled back from a 3-0 deficit, Team Canada coach Mike Keenan sent the Gretzky / Lemieux / Hawerchuk line on the ice for a faceoff in Canada’s end. The rest is history as Gretzky, Lemieux, and Larry Murphy rushed up the ice, Gretzky skating on the left wing, setting up Lemieux’s game-winner in the slot with 1:26 left in the game. Gretzky’s pass to Lemieux, followed by Lemieux’s goal, is one of the most memorable plays in hockey history.

Gretzky to Lemieux captures the on-ice drama that led to the historic three-game final, and the stories behind it. Ed Willes adds depth and weight to the games by revealing the rebellion among Soviet hockey stars in the early days of Glasnost and a crumbling Soviet Union; the trouble brewing for Alan Eagleson; the ascendancy of Mario Lemieux; and the end of the glorious Gretzky era in Edmonton.

Packed with interviews of players and coaches, Gretzky to Lemieux tells the full story of the greatest hockey ever played.

It is the final minute of the second period in Game 2 of the 1987 Canada Cup final and the Canadians and Soviets have been battling like Carthage and Rome for two hours. This game, the greatest hockey game ever played, will continue for two more hours, ending midway through the second overtime period when Wayne Gretzky sets up Mario Lemieux for his third goal of the game, giving Canada a 6—5 win and tying the series at one game apiece. Gretzky records five assists this night. Canada has forty-five scoring chances, the Soviets thirty-eight. Four times the Soviets fall behind and claw back to tie, but they can never get the go-ahead goal behind the unflappable Grant Fuhr in the Canadian net. Canada also plays the game with ten forwards, and head coach Mike Keenan will use twenty-nine different line combinations.

Gretzky calls the 1987 Canada Cup the greatest hockey of his career and this shift is a tiny, perfect microcosm of those glorious three nights in September. Gretzky has been sprung on a three-on-two rush courtesy of a surgical breakout pass from Paul Coffey. Lemieux is on his right. Michel Goulet is on his left. Defending for the Russians are Viacheslav Fetisov and Alexei Kasatonov, the best blue line pairing in the world. As he gains the Russian zone, Gretzky, a left-handed shot, veers to his right, taking Fetisov with him, and everyone at Copps Coliseum is expecting a pass to Lemieux, including Lemieux, who’s scored on a textbook two-on-one with Gretzky just three minutes before. But, as Fetisov overplays to Lemieux’s side, Gretzky lays a no-look, backhand saucer pass to Goulet, who is all alone in front of Russian goalie Evgeny Belosheikin. The pass, made while Gretzky is moving at top speed, is so soft and delicate it almost melts into the ice. It also puts Goulet a shade too tight to the Russian goalie and Belosheikin, who will die by his own hand twelve years later, has no trouble making the save.

But the play is not over. The puck is scrambled out near the Russian blue line, where Russian star Vladimir Krutov is trying to gain clear possession. Gretzky re-materializes in front of him, steals the puck, then chips it past Kasatonov, who is about to head up-ice. Again, Gretzky is on the attack, with Lemieux on his right. Again, he drives toward Lemieux, taking the Russian defence and Belosheikin with him.

With all eyes on Gretzky, however, a whipped Goulet has limped to the Team Canada bench, where twenty-four-year-old Doug Gilmour leaps over the boards and charges into the play. This time Gretzky is on his forehand before he executes a slight pivot and leaves the puck for Gilmour, who is unchecked and looking at three-quarters of an empty net. The crowd is on its feet again. Gilmour fires, and, out of nowhere, Krutov frantically slides into Gilmour’s shooting lane and deflects the puck over the glass.

The whole sequence, from the moment Coffey starts the rush from behind the Team Canada net, takes twenty-five seconds in real time. At its conclusion, Gretzky hobbles to the Team Canada bench and leans over, spent. Lemieux slumps by the far post next to Belosheikin. The crowd at Copps is on its feet. To this point, they’ve already been up and down twenty times, saluting each highlight with a standing ovation. They will be on their feet twenty more times before the game finally ends at about one in the morning, after an exhausted Gretzky wets himself on the Team Canada bench, after Fuhr keeps Canada in the game and the series with an epic performance, after Gretzky sets up Lemieux for the game-winner and finally they float out of Copps only to return two nights later to a game that isn’t quite as artistic but is every bit as dramatic.

It’s now almost twenty years after the fact but this hockey still throbs with an energy so great it takes your breath away. Rick Tocchet, the Team Canada forward who will announce his presence to the game during the tournament, still has tapes of those Wnal three games that he watches when his conWdence needs boosting. “It still gives me tingles,” he says.

In Detroit, Igor Larionov, the magical Russian centreman who played on the greatest five-man unit the game has ever seen, still marvels at this tournament. “You can talk about the ’72 series,” Larionov says. “That was the first page of the history. But ’87 was like pure hockey. There were no systems. There were no traps. We just played wide-open, instinctive hockey. You can’t really say the Canadians won and the Russians lost. Hockey won in that series.”

Keenan, of course, isn’t quite as philosophical about the final outcome but even the veteran coach, who’s never been confused for the sensitive type, turns poetic as he recalls the series. “If Gary Bettman wants to change the face of hockey, someone should show him that series and tell him, ‘This is what we’re trying to achieve.’” Keenan says. “The speed, the cadence of what was happening at ice level was unbelievable. You didn’t have the time to be reflective while it’s going on. You had to be in the moment and even a little ahead of the moment. But sitting here in my office now I can say, ‘Wow, that was incredible.’”

A Canadian Hockey Delight
By Matthew Morine
As part of the trip to Canada, it was on the menu to read a good hockey book. I purchased this book before the trip in hopes of it being a worthy read. It is always disappointing to read bad material on vacation. Fortunately, this book did not disappoint. I remember this Canada Cup as a child. Unclear memories, but a hazy moment stands out. I remember the goal. I was just a child, but it left a mark of Canadian Hockey pride. We beat the Russians. This book took me back to childhood. It took me back to simpler time in hockey. Ken Dryden states that the best hockey was played during our childhoods. This was the time of the biggest stars. This book left me with chills at moments. It is a Canadian hockey fan's delight.

Great book, couldn't put it down!
By James Tuckwell
If you are a hockey fan this book's for you! There will never be another hockey tournament again like the Canadian-Russian series of 1987 and this book captures all the action and behind the scenes drama of what is considered by many as the best and most exciting hockey series ever played. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and if you have any interest in the sport of hockey, you will too!

A stunning book
By Sylvie Beaudreau
This book is simply stunning, and a bargain at this price. It is a large coffee-table sized volume that combines beautiful production values with scholarly articles on various aspects of Champlain's eventful life. Many perspectives are included, from historians, archaeologists, art historians, archivists, museum curators from around the world. For the professional historian or just the lover of history, this book is a real treat. Original maps and illustrations, photos and images of all kinds delight the eye. It makes Champlain - a true Renaissance man - and his world really "come alive", as well it should, for modern audiences. Dive in and read sections as your interest leads you. The only downside is that because of it's size, you'll have to read it on your lap.

Two Days in June: John F. Kennedy and the 48 Hours that Made History, by Andrew Cohen

On two consecutive days in June 1963, in two lyrical speeches, John F. Kennedy pivots dramatically and boldly on the two greatest issues of his time: nuclear arms and civil rights. In language unheard in lily white, Cold War America, he appeals to Americans to see both the Russians and the "Negroes" as human beings. His speech on June 10 leads to the Limited Nuclear Test Ban Treaty of 1963; his speech on June 11 to the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Based on new material -- hours of recently uncovered documentary film shot in the White House and the Justice Department, fresh interviews, and a rediscovered draft speech -- Two Days in June captures Kennedy at the high noon of his presidency in startling, granular detail which biographer Sally Bedell Smith calls "a seamless and riveting narrative, beautifully written, weaving together the consequential and the quotidian, with verve and authority." Moment by moment, JFK's feverish forty-eight hours unspools in cinematic clarity as he addresses "peace and freedom." In the tick-tock of the American presidency, we see Kennedy facing down George Wallace over the integration of the University of Alabama, talking obsessively about sex and politics at a dinner party in Georgetown, recoiling at a newspaper photograph of a burning monk in Saigon, planning a secret diplomatic mission to Indonesia, and reeling from the midnight murder of Medgar Evers.
There were 1,036 days in the presidency of John F. Kennedy. This is the story of two of them.

Review
“He may have served for a thousand days but it was two days that made John F. Kennedy's presidency. No one before Andrew Cohen has recognized that, and because of his signal achievement in Two Days in June, no one will be able to write about -- no one will be able to think about -- John Kennedy ever again in quite the same way. Channeling Theodore White and William Manchester, Andrew Cohen has changed the way we regard JFK in Two Days as much as JFK changed the presidency and the world in those two days.”
—David M. Shribman, editor, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, winner of the Pulitzer Prize

“Andrew Cohen calls the two days during which President John F. Kennedy delivered ground-breaking speeches addressing the great post-war threats to America -- racial inequality and nuclear war – ‘his lyrical journey to peace and freedom.’ Cohen's own lyrical account of these days provides an intimate, moving, and revelatory portrait of Kennedy that is superbly detailed and thrillingly narrated.”
—Thurston Clarke, author, JFK’s Last Hundred Days: The Transformation of a Man and the Emergence of a Great President and Ask Not: The Inauguration of John F. Kennedy and the Speech That Changed America

“Using a literary zoom lens, Andrew Cohen zeroes in on forty-eight dramatic hours in John F. Kennedy's presidency to superbly illuminate his leadership in a compelling and original way. It is Kennedy up close and personal, making history with two of his most important speeches -- one carefully planned, the other a brilliant improvisation. Two Days in June nimbly juggles fast-moving presidential challenges at home and abroad, with fascinating new details of the drama unfolding behind the scenes on Air Force One, in the Oval Office, in the private quarters of the White House, and in the most exclusive salon in Georgetown.... Cohen's analysis of the two speeches and their impact, and his assessment of their measure in JFK's presidency is astute and constitutes an entirely original perspective. His research has been prodigious. Even Kennedy devotees and experts will find new tidbits throughout, judiciously placed in the author's seamless and riveting narrative, which is beautifully written and weaves together the consequential and the quotidian, with verve and authority..... At the center of the tale is Cohen's thoughtful portrait of JFK, the restless multi-tasker with the capacious world view, idealist and pragmatic simultaneously, ever alert to the quirks of human nature, his own included. Well beyond the president, the character sketches capture the big personalities (and several smaller ones) with insight and sensitivity. Through the prism of the Joseph Alsop dinner party, Cohen sweeps in crucial themes and personalities, putting the capital's secrets and licentious behavior in perspective, with wonderful fresh observations from Antonia Fraser. The entire book reflects Cohen's original take on mid-June 1963, beginning with his brilliant conceit of following the arc of JFK's flight from Hawaii to Washington to deliver the commencement address at American University. And it ends with his wonderful touch, imagining the two days as depicted by a Renaissance artist, Kennedy in all his roles, tossing ‘flares into the future.’”
—Sally Bedell Smith, author, Grace and Power: The Private World of the Kennedy White House

Praise for While Canada Slept:
 • "A trenchant critique of modern Canadian foreign policy." Time magazine
 • "Cohen's contribution is invaluable. A book full of...rich detail, written with passion and engaging prose.... A must read for all of those who wish to understand the roots of Canada's global outlook." Globe and Mail

Compelling, magnetic, fresh
By Ronald Cohen
As a young man (unrelated to the author, despite our common surname), I was present at the Boston Garden for JFK's last public appearance before he retired to Hyannis Port to await the results of the 1960 election. Even in those early days, Kennedy was a magical figure. In Two Days in June, Andrew Cohen has caught the continuing magic of the (by then, 30+ months later) mature, well-oiled, inspirational, principled Kennedy presidency. His book reflects the author's inspired choices, first in the selection of those two June days through which to tell the story, and then in selecting the stories within the story. It is meticulously researched and brilliantly written. I was unable to put it down. It is fresh, with much that is new, even for seasoned Kennedy followers. The shaping of the character and relationships of the participants is insightful and compelling, whether the central figures or the lesser-known persons. The author does not miss a beat. You will be left with a new understanding of the fore-shortened Kennedy presidency. There is not an instant of tedium in this vibrant tale. A great read.

Beautifully written!
By R.M. Doyon
For the millions of people around the world, American or otherwise, who continue to be fascinated about John F. Kennedy's presidency, Two Days in June is a must-read. Delving into what was perhaps the most momentous forty-eight hours of JFK's short-lived reign, it is beautifully written by one of the world's foremost Kennedy scholars. Cohen's research is meticulous, his prose so elegant that this book should be savored on a cold winter night by the fireplace. Don't delay...buy it now!

read like a novel (good histories often do
By david webb
I found Andy Cohen's TWO DAYS IN JUNE a gripping read. To confess my biases right up-front: I taught Andy English in his junior year of high school and have kept in touch ever since, and I think of myself as a Cape Codder, so I'm a big fan of both Andy and JFK. I respected Andy's method, a neat balance between narration -- it did, at times, read like a novel (good histories often do!) -- filling in backgrounds, on people and contributing events, loads and loads of detail, and analysis. As I was born in 1946 and was just coming of age when Kennedy was our President, this book brought me right back to my own youth. It focuses on two remarkable speeches Kennedy delivered on June 10 and 11, 1963, the first on "world peace" (really on arms control with Khrushchev) and the second on civil rights, prompted by the integration of the University of Alabama. This Blessed Land: Crimea and the Crimean Tatars, by Paul Robert Magocsi

A virtual island in the Black Sea, Crimea is connected to the European continent by only a narrow sliver of land. For centuries it was part of the Ottoman and Russian empires, then the Soviet Union, and today independent Ukraine. But its history goes back even farther, as is evident from a landscape filled with the remnants of cultures and peoples: classical Greeks, Goths, Byzantines, Mongols, imperial Russians, and, most importantly, Crimean Tatars.

An authoritative introduction to this fascinating region, This Blessed Land is the first book in English to trace the vast history of Crimea from pre-historic times to the present. Written by Paul Robert Magocsi, author of A History of Ukraine: The Land and Its Peoples and the Historical Atlas of Central Europe, This Blessed Land will captivate general readers and serious scholars alike.

Canada and Immigration (Canadian Public Administration Series), by Freda Hawkins

Remarkable changes have taken place in Canadian immigration policy, law, and management since this book was first published. A long-awaited new Immigration Act was passed in 1976 and became law in 1978. This marked the beginning of a new, more liberal, and more co-operative era in Canadian immigration. The new Act established clear national objectives in immigration and refugee policy. The new edition of Canada and Immigration takes into account these major changes in Canadian attitudes and policies toward immigration. The author discusses what these changes have meant for Canada, considering the new laws, closer federal-provincial collaboration, more confident and effective management, and the better and more open relationship with the public and the media. Looking beyond these positive developments, she argues that for Canada to meet the coming challeges of global population change and international migration, we must create a cohesive immigration department which can handle the task. The present seriously fragmented management structure does not have the direct lines of communication and the control which will be needed. In this edition, the author also details developments in every major topic area - domestic and international - discussed in the first edition. These areas include population policy, refugees and undocumented migrants and migration, multiculturalism, an outline of developments in Ontario and Quebec and immigration management. The appendices and bibliography are also revised and updated.
