The NHL Through The Eyes Of A Goalie
By LIGolfer
As a NHL fan since my teenage years I always enjoyed watching Ken Dryden play in the net. Reading this book, written in 1983, I once again find that the NHL is more than just a game on ice. This book was a pleasant read and gave a lot of insights concerning the Montreal Canadians during the years Ken Dryden was in the net. I would suggest it be read by any NHL fan especially any Montreal hockey fan.

Can't downgrade a book written by my favorite goalie
By TruxtonSpangler
I read the constant, effusive praise for this book as the best hockey book out there. I'm not sure that I agree, only because it's almost as much an introspective book about the author as it is about hockey. Ken Dryden remains my favorite goalie of all time -- no matter what he did to my beloved Blackhawks -- and I loved listening to him give commentary at hockey events. I can't claim to have read many hockey books with which to compare this book, but if what they say is true and this is the best hockey book of all time, the rest must be underwhelming in the extreme.

All or Nothing: A Short History of Abstinence in America, by Jessica Warner

A completely original exploration of the abstinence movement in America — from alcohol to sex to meat.

America's long love affair with abstinence goes back to the early nineteenth century, when thousands of men and women suddenly stopped drinking hard liquor. Consistency then demanded that they give up all their other vices — beer and cider, tobacco, coffee, meat, pickles, pies, masturbation, and more. Two centuries later, the ideal of abstinence has lost none of its power to influence how Americans live — and how they want you to live.

With her trademark wit and irony, acclaimed author Jessica Warner tells the story of one of America's most enduring and powerful ideals. There are many surprises along the way, starting with the abolitionists, feminists, and other do-gooders who were the first — and most thoroughgoing — of America's abstainers. And always there are the colourful people who brought the idea to life — the visionaries, preachers, college professors, feminists, and cranks who practiced what they preached.

Review
"[Warner] is so good at simply telling a story, getting it right, and seducing us all to enjoy it right along with her."
— Simon Winchester

"Warner does an exemplary job of chronicling this complicated history . . . recommended reading for anyone who wants to understand North American culture today — the war on drugs, the increase in teetotalism and a teen virginity movement that is displacing safe-sex programs."
— National Post

In 1986, on his fortieth birthday, George W. Bush suddenly stopped drinking. He refused to go into the reasons behind his decision, other than to allude to boyish pranks and glancing brushes with the law. What he did not mention was that he had been arrested on at least two occasions — for disorderly conduct in 1966, and for driving under the influence of alcohol in 1976. Whether he was genuinely alcoholic was less clear. Bush himself has always resisted that label, saying only that he was “addicted” to alcohol. “I wasn’t a knee-walking drunk,” he told a group of teenagers in 2007. “I had too much to drink one night, and the next day I didn’t have any.”

The truth was that Bush’s decision had little to do with his drinking. It came just as he was starting to identify himself as an evangelical Christian, and as his commitment to evangelicalism has grown, so has his commitment to abstinence as a solution to a wide range of problems — to drug abuse, to teenage pregnancies, to the aids epidemic in sub-Saharan Africa. As governor of Texas, he liked to tell teenagers to avoid all sexual activity until they had entered into a “biblical marriage relationship.” As a presidential candidate in 1999 and 2000, he talked endlessly about sexual morality. “I have been faithful to my wife,” he would say when the subject of then president Bill Clinton’s sexual transgressions came up. (When reporters pressed him on the subject and asked whether he himself had been chaste until marriage, he became evasive, saying only, “I think the thing that baby boomers have to say is not, ‘Did we make mistakes?’ but ‘Have we learned from our mistakes and are we willing to share the wisdom?’”) As president of the United States, he would preside over a vast increase in federal funding for abstinence-only sex education, with expenditures peaking at US$176 million in 2007.

My goal in writing this book is to explore why abstinence is so important to evangelicals like George W. Bush. The implications would be minimal if abstinence were a private virtue and nothing more. But as Bush’s example makes all too clear, the tendency in American history has been for abstinence to spill over into the public sphere. Temperance began as a voluntary movement and ended with Prohibition. The sexual purity movement of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries led to legislation that made it illegal to transport females across state lines for “immoral purposes” (the Mann Act). The New Virginity, an evangelical movement spearheaded by the Southern Baptist Convention, has shaded into the use of federal tax dollars to pressure public schools into teaching abstinence-only sex education.

Nor have the concept’s effects been confined to America. The Woman’s Christian Temperance Union went international in 1883. America’s wars on drugs have always been world wars, fought as much in that country as in the countries that supply it with drugs. The New Virginity is by its very nature a missionary movement, with outposts in Britain and sub-Saharan Africa.

The problems these movements propose to solve vary, but the underlying principle, that the only safe response to risk is to eliminate it altogether, has remained remarkably constant. That there have been so many of these movements, and that they keep returning to the same solution, suggests that the time has come to take a closer look at the religious ideal they share.

By abstinence I mean a principled and unerring refusal to engage in a particular activity. Going without something for a short period of time is not abstinence. The person who gives up meat on Fridays is not giving up meat per se; that person is simply giving up meat once a week. The abstainer is driven by an entirely different logic: if something is problematic on some occasions, then it is problematic on all occasions. Anything short of total victory is a form of defeat.

The concept is simple, but its implications are both complex and far-reaching, affecting how Americans think about their health and their indulgences — and how their government promotes the first and regulates the second. Nor does the idea show any sign of fading. On the contrary. Most Americans (79.2 per cent) do not smoke. A large minority (38.9 per cent) do not drink. Nine million (an estimated 3 per cent) do not eat meat. Four million, all of them schoolchildren, have been browbeaten into swearing off drugs. Approximately one-third of all public-school students are taught abstinence-only sex education.

Americans have sworn off so many different things at so many different times that a strictly chronological history runs the risk of becoming cluttered and unwieldy. I have opted instead to focus on the concept at crucial junctures in its development, from its origins in eighteenth-century England to its migration, in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, to the American South. Each chapter examines the concept from a different angle, but all return to the same point: America’s commitment to abstinence is a function of that country’s commitment to an idiosyncratic and especially demanding strain of evangelical Protestantism. As the contours of that creed have changed, so has the face of abstinence. From its high point in the 1830s, the concept has become progressively narrower, shorn first of its social radicalism, next of its all-encompassing asceticism, and last of its post-millennial idealism. The one thing that has not changed is the faith strict evangelicals place in abstinence. More than half are teetotallers. Few use illicit drugs. Almost all continue to believe in premarital chastity.

The doctrine that guides their actions has gone by any number of names over the years — Christian perfection, sanctification, holiness, the second blessing. Its core teaching, that the Christian can conquer sin, is an article of faith among evangelical Protestants. Where they have differed is in how they define sin. The trend has been for that definition to contract over time, and with it, the number of things Americans are willing to give up. The ends abstinence serves have also undergone a startling transformation. Once the handmaiden of feminists such as Susan B. Anthony and abolitionists such as William Lloyd Garrison, abstinence today is primarily associated with conservative evangelicals, with people like James Dobson, Tim LaHaye, and, of course, George W. Bush.

Killarnoe, by Sonnet L'Abbe

With its razzle-dazzle wordplay and kaleidoscope of subjects, Sonnet L’Abbé’s second collection of poems is a tour-de-force. L’Abbé invents her own unique poetics, coupling a glittering variety of patterns with tumbling rhythms and rhymes. And with this refreshed language, she reconsiders all the rules for twenty-first-century life. The poems work like a whirlwind, ranging from the intimacy of infancy to the shock of whole civilizations razed by war, and are infused with a political undertone that reveals a child’s emerging understanding of identity, of specific citizenship, of bodies physical and psychological, of language, imagination, and dream. Whether funny or funky, candid or subtle, amused and ironic or stunned in fright, the poems are guided by a fierce intelligence that never oversimplifies the world. Killarnoe, the poet tells us, “is a place I invented right now. I just built it from my head.” And in its reconsideration of what it means to be, Killarnoe is fascinating, charged, and inspired.

A Word about the Poem by Sonnet L’Abbe
One of the interests I explore in Killarnoe is the unspoken relationship of phonemes (basic units of sound in language, like “ah,” or “sh,” or “uh”) to meaning. There’s an intuitive connection between the feeling elicited in the body when pronouncing a word and its signification. For example, the pristine sound of “ee” suggests a clean, free motion or a scream, while the hollow sound of “oh” suggests something lower, something whole and orblike.

I’m also interested in how these sounds get coded culturally, in what “sounds foreign” to Canadian ears. Where bazaars are common, names with “z” aren’t bizarre, but what does it mean to be named Aziz or Zalena here?

How the Poem Works by Margaret Christakos
Living in parentheses is resisted through utterance, on the wing’s highest heart and at language’s most inner pitches, so that the reverberations of that tiniest of bon mots signifies the radiance of the self. L’Abbe’s incantatory repetition and melodic optimism complete a notative poetics of private thought, of public comeback, and of identity inscription. Greedy, and tender, like the mouth itself.

From Library Journal
Consultant Clemmer (Firing on All Cylinders: The Service-Quality System for High-Powered Corporate Performance, Irwin, 1992) identifies and describes successful strategies for individuals who are "trying to initiate and guide change and improvement in a team, business or organization." Each chapter focuses on topics such as self-leadership, innovation and organizational learning, and reward and recognition. Most end with a Pathways and Pitfalls section, where Clemmer visits several dos and don'ts for the individual and the organization. The introduction warns that most of the author's ideas are not new; his purpose is to explore ideas that have worked. Clemmer avoids oversimplification and delivers a practical, funny, and sometimes inspiring book. Recommended for popular business collections.?Mark McCullough, Heterick Lib., Ohio Northern Univ., Ada

...successfully weaves together the high-performance rope out of the strands of organization improvement, leadership development, and personal effectiveness. -- Scott DeGarmo, Editor in Chief and Publisher, Success Magazine

A must read for any leader or aspiring leader. It will inspire and instruct you to be a change agent. -- Ken Blanchard, Co-author, The One Minute Manager

Cuts through the rhetoric of theoretical concepts to navigate the business leader on his journey to high performance. -- Roger Staubach, Chairman and CEO, The Staubach Company

From the Publisher
Forward by Scott DeGarmo, Editor in Chief and Publisher, Success Magazine

There is an ancient story that has enjoyed endless variations. The one I know involves three wise but sightless men who chance upon an elephant. The first wise man gets hold of one of the elephant's legs and cries out, "Why, it's a magnificent mansion with huge columns!" The next wise man, feeling the elephant's tail, retorts derisively, "It's nothing of the kind. This is but a very strong rope." The last wise man, feeling one of the elephant's tusks, says with equal certainty, "You are both wrong. What we have here are some of the most fearsome sabers you can ever imagine."

I tell you this story because it reminds me of the endless discussions concerning how to build a successful company. There are those who insist that successful organizations come out of personal effectiveness if your people are effective, then your company will also be. Others insist that it is simply a matter of good leadership with the right leader, any organization will thrive. Others, however, swear with equal fervor that the measure of a successful company lies in the effectiveness of its organizational structure.

Like the experiences of the three wise men, each of these points of view is right in a limited way and wrong in its incompleteness as a total philosophy for corporate improvement. The truth lies in the fact that these three views combined create the necessary vision to build a successful organization. Here, paradox becomes paradigm! Jim Clemmer's Pathways to Performance is the first book I have read that successfully weaves the high-performance rope out of the strands of organizational improvement, leadership development, and personal effectiveness. Here you'll find no quick fixes; Clemmer correctly believes there are none. Rather, he demonstrates what has taken him years of experience to learn, both as a successful entrepreneur (as you will soon read) and as one of the most brilliant and sought-after consultants in North America.

This is no dry tome. Jim's understated humor permeates every part of this book. The style is breezy and accessible. Yet, he is dead-on accurate in pointing out some of the amazing inanities that underlie the way we go about trying to effect change. He may irritate you, and I know he will challenge and perhaps even madden you. But he will make you think!

So, keep your mind open and your ego in check. You'll be richly rewarded!

Very Engaging
By Julie Gil
I really enjoyed this book. It helped put leadership into perspective -- the fact that in order to change or influence an organization, I need to change myself. I appreciated Clemmer's ideas around working at becoming a better leader ("leaders are made, not born"), and the importance of continued, continuous learning. It is an easy read, with humor, lots of quotations, examples, and simple suggestions to begin *being* a better leader in all aspects of your life. It has made me stop, reflect, and write notes about what I am going to do to incorporate some of these ideas into my life. The idea of "victimitis" and recognizing the "Catch 22" of the poor-me syndrome was particularly pertinent. This book covers the entire spectrum of home life and career, which is why I find it so helpful -- many management books don't concentrate enough on the improving all aspects of life. It especially hits home the need for the leader to establish his/her own personal values and direction and to lead by example. I've purchased copies for people close to me that I'm sure will find value in this book.

An inspiring companion to Gil Amelio's ''Profit from Experience: The National Semiconductor Story of Transformation Management'
By Lee Say Keng
I highly recommend this wonderful book as an inspiring companion to Gil Amelio's 'Proft for Experience: The National Semi-Conductor Story of Transformation Management', which I have reviewed earlier. Both books were published around the mid-nineties, but the relevancy & practicality of their lessons & insights have not faded.

It draws its intellectual cues from three principal strands of high performance: organisational, leadership & personal effectiveness. In some way, it builds on the author's two earlier books, 'The VIP Strategy: Leadership Skills for Exceptional Performance' & 'Firing on All Six Cylinders'. I have read the latter book, which has a primary focus on service/quality improvement.

What I like about this book is the author's introductory premise: Before you try to change anyone else, you have got to change yourself. Self-leadership is at the heart of effectively leading others. Self-improvement is the beginning point to team or organisational improvement. The author is also candid about his book: Many of the principles & insights are not new. In fact, they have been with us for decades, if not centuries. But we continually need to rediscover them for ourselves; repackage them for our times; & to make them relevant for today. The author is obviously driven by what works. He argues that, when dealing with personal & people issues, the fundamentals of what works have remained fairly constant through the years.

Additionally, I also like the presentation format of the book: each chapter starts with a 'Pathways' section, covering success strategies that really work, but also ends with a 'Pitfalls' section, where the author visits several Do's and Don't's for the individual as well as for the organization.

For readers who are seeking more real-world perspectives in initiating & guide change & improvement in a team, business or organizational setting, this book is definitely worth pursuing.

I have enjoyed reading this book, together with Gil Amelio's book, & I am confident readers will feel likewise!

Canada's Victorian Oil Town: The Transformation of Petrolia from Resource Town into a Victorian Community, by Christina Burr

In the early 1850s, the oil industry had a major impact on the resource town of Petrolia, Ontario. Christina Burr explores the ways in which the industry provided a common cultural identification that helped Petrolia change from a rough shanty-town of disreputable land speculators and wildcatters into an orderly, civilized Victorian community. Departing from traditional historiography focused on the economic role of resource development, Canada's Victorian Oil Town incorporates an understanding of the connections between science and technology, nation and imperialism, and cultural nuances of community-building. Burr looks at the cultural importance of place and how collective identity was nurtured in the community. She also illustrates how the image of Petrolia as Canada's Victorian Oil Town has been used since the 1970s to develop a thriving tourist industry in the region. Interdisciplinary in scope, Canada's Victorian Oil Town draws from the history of imperialism, science, resource development, local history, gender studies, and cultural geography.

"What an exciting story! I thoroughly enjoyed the exegesis of the relationship between natural science, ideas of social progress, and industrial capital - a story that allowed allusions to 'witchers, ' 'dousers, ' and 'oil-smellers.' It's a good read." Brian Osborne, geography, Queen's University "Burr has explored Petrolia's rich history and hitherto unexplored cultural and technological dimensions and taken into account many of the complexities, struggles, and tensions that made it the town it is today." Paths of Glory: The Life and Death of General James Wolfe, by Stephen Brumwell

WINNER: 2008 C. P. STACEY PRIZE (Best book in Canadian Military History) WINNER: 2008 DISTINGUISHED BOOK AWARD, SOCIETY OF COLONIAL WARS Ugly, gangling, and tormented by agonising illness, Major General James Wolfe was an unlikely hero. Yet in 1759, on the Plains of Abraham before Quebec, he won a battle with momentous consequences. Wolfe's victory, bought at the cost of his life, ensured that English, not French, would become the dominant language in North America. Ironically, by crippling French ambitions on this continent Wolfe paved the way for American independence from Britain. Already renowned for bold leadership, Wolfe's death at the very moment of victory at Quebec cemented his heroic status on both sides of the Atlantic. He became an icon of patriotic self-sacrifice, immortalised in epic paintings and verse. During the past half century, however, Wolfe's reputation has undergone sustained assault by revisionist historians who see him as a bloodthirsty and self-righteous mediocrity, famous for one singularly lucky - though crucial - victory. Was there more to James Wolfe than a celebrated death? Stephen Brumwell's internationally praised biography seeks to answer that question, drawing on extensive research to offer a boldly argued reassessment of a soldier whose short but dramatic life changed the course of world history.

Absorbing in-depth chronicle of a pivotal historical figure.
By Midwest Book Review
Paths of Glory: The Life and Death of General James Wolfe is the first full-length biography published in half a century of Major General James Wolfe, a British military hero whose decisive 1759 victory against the French, on the Plains of Abraham before Quebec, ensured that English would become the dominant language of North America. Wolfe paid for his victory with his life; since then he has been enshrined in paintings, praised for his military genius and self-effacing modesty, and reviled by revisionist historians who paint him as bloodthirsty and snooty. Paths of Glory seeks to uncover the truth, as best as historical records and testimonies can deliver, of the chronically ill Wolfe's life and death. An inset handful of color and black-and-white illustrations, notes, and an index round out this absorbing in-depth chronicle of a pivotal historical figure.

A First Class Biography
By Thomas Fink
Stephen Brumwell's biography of General James Wolfe is a top notch read for those interested in the man behind one of the most decisive battles in North American history. Through extensive research, Mr. Brumwell delves into the known facts, testimony and controversy surrounding this determined and inspirational leader and gets as close as anyone can to the truth, heart and life of General James Wolfe. As I read the book I felt I got to know Wolfe as a real person--through his hopes, desires, disappointments, doubts and courage during his short lived life leading up to his death on the Plains of Abraham in his "against-all-odds" victory against the French at Quebec. For anyone interested in the history of North America--this is a Must Read! I only hope this book is used as a blueprint for an epic movie about one of the greatest British Generals of the French and Indian War.

Loss Of Faith: How The Air India Bombers Got Away With Murder, by Kim Bolan

Riveting and shocking, Loss of Faith is essential reading for all Canadians.

On June 23, 1985, Canada found itself on the international terrorism map when two bombs built in B.C. detonated within an hour of each other on opposite sides of the world, killing 329 men, women, and children.

Canadian Sikh separatists, upset at the Indian government for attacking their religion’s holiest shrine, the Golden Temple, were immediately suspected by the RCMP of perpetrating the worst act of aviation terrorism before Sept. 11, 2001. But while police agencies scrambled to infiltrate a close-knit immigrant community and collect evidence against the suspects, the Canadian Security Intelligence Service was destroying taped telephone calls between the same people the RCMP was investigating.

For years those at the centre of the terrorist plot tried to protect their dark secret. Two Sikh newspaper publishers who overheard an alleged confession by one of the bombers were assassinated. Other potential witnesses were threatened and intimidated. Journalists who wrote about the suspects were targeted by death threats and harassment. The suspects founded charities and participated in political parties, attending fundraising dinners for premiers and prime ministers. And the families of the victims fought to be recognized for their unimaginable loss as the result of an act of terrorism plotted in Canada. When charges were finally laid against three Sikh separatists, the families believed justice was almost theirs. But their faith was shaken when one suspect pleaded guilty to manslaughter and got a five-year sentence for more than three hundred deaths.

The Air-India trial judge spoke in his ruling of the “the senseless horror” of the bombings. He called the plot “a diabolical act of terrorism” with “roots in fanaticism at its basest and most inhumane level.” He then acquitted Sikh leaders Ripudaman Singh Malik and Ajaib Singh Bagri on all charges, leaving the victims’ families reeling and the biggest case in Canadian history officially unsolved.

Kim Bolan is an award-winning investigative reporter who has covered the Air-India bombing case since the day Flight 182 went down off the coast of Ireland. Her work on the Air-India story has taken her to Punjab five times over the last twenty years where she met with militant Sikh separatist leaders and victims of the violence. She also followed Air-India mastermind Talwinder Singh Parmar to Pakistan before his 1992 slaying and chased down other suspects in England and across Canada. But she faced the most danger at home in Vancouver where the stories she uncovered about the Air-India case led to a series of death threats against her.

Prologue

On June 23, 2005, Prime Minister Paul Martin was in Ahakista, Ireland, where he joined relatives of the victims of the 1985 bombings that thrust Canada into the age of terrorism. He was there in an attempt to correct decades of political inaction. Hundreds of the victims’ relatives, rescue workers, locals, and Canadian politicians of all stripes had gathered to commemorate the twentieth anniversary of the death of 329 people aboard Air-India Flight 182 and two baggage handlers at Narita airport in Japan.

“We are not naive. We are not ignorant of the world and its sorrows, but this act of evil defies comprehension,” Martin said. “It was an unimaginable loss. It was your loss. It was the nation’s loss. Make no mistake. The flight may have been Air-India’s, it may have taken place off the coast of Ireland, but in so many ways, this is a Canadian tragedy.”

This was the first time since the bombings that a Canadian prime minister had thought to attend the annual service marking the most dastardly act of terror in the country’s history. The gesture was appreciated by the victims’ relatives, but Martin did little to answer the questions uppermost in their minds: How and why had their country let them down?

Canada failed to stop the bombers as they attempted to take revenge against their birth nation, India, for its perceived persecution of the Sikh minority. Canada failed to recognize that the majority of the 331 victims, while of Indian origin, were Canadians. Canada failed for years to catch those involved and, when charges were finally laid, Canada’s justice system showed it could not deal with the complexities of a terrorism plot or with suspects determined not to be exposed, charged, or convicted.

Within three weeks of Martin’s acknowledgement that the bombings were “a Canadian tragedy,” his deputy prime minister, Anne McLellan, alienated the Air-India victims’ families by her comments on the July 7, 2005, terrorist bombings in London. “I do not believe that Canadians are as psychologically prepared for a terrorist attack as I think probably we all should be,” McLellan told reporters. “I think we have, perhaps for too long, thought that these were things that happened somewhere else. But Canadians are not immune.”

Had McLellan forgotten about the Air-India bombings? Or has she, like many Canadians, underplayed their significance because they primarily affected people who weren’t perceived to be our own — brown people with accents whom we didn’t accept as Canadians? But they are our own. Our own victims. Our own terrorists. Our own Indo-Canadian community ripped apart and tarnished by the acts of a fanatical few who have manipulated the laws of Canada for twenty years.

Terrorism seemed to enter the North American consciousness only on September 11, 2001, when New York and Washington, D.C., were targeted by religious extremists. Canada developed an anti-terrorism law in response to these attacks, but not in response to the 1985 Air-India bombings. Canada cracked down on terrorist fundraising here only after the 9/11 attacks and not when our own country suffered its worst act of terrorism. Canada waited until June 2003 to ban Sikh extremist groups linked to the Air-India bombing and other crimes on Canadian soil — eighteen years after Air-India Flight 182 was demolished in mid-air by a B.C.—built bomb.

As Canadians, we need to look closely at how we responded to this horrible, unprecedented crime. We need to ask if our own laws and policies, including official multiculturalism, contributed to “this act of evil.” We need to know how and why the bombers got away with mass murder.

When I started as a reporter at the Vancouver Sun on May 28, 1984, fresh out of journalism school, I had never heard of Sikhism’s holiest shrine — the Golden Temple in Amritsar, Punjab. I knew Sikhism was a religion from India, but like most Canadians, I knew little else about it. I certainly knew nothing of the extraordinary history of the Sikh community in Canada, a history of standing up for justice, immigration, and voting rights, and against racism.

Six days after I started at the Sun, the Indian Army stormed the Golden Temple to rid it of violent militants who had taken it over under the leadership of the charismatic extremist Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale and were demanding a separate homeland for Sikhs. Bhindranwale and his supporters were killed, but so were hundreds of innocent pilgrims. Canadian journalists were suddenly covering massive street demonstrations by Sikhs in Vancouver, Toronto, Calgary, and Ottawa. I was one of the many sent to find out what was going on.

I found that the Sikhs I spoke with were only too willing to share their culture, religion, and political views with me. They also taught me the basic tenets of their faith — equality for all and the need to fight against discrimination and oppression. They stressed the importance of sewa,or service, to the community and the nation.

The reaction of Canadian Sikhs to the storming of the temple brewed for months. There were protests, violent clashes with police, burnings of Indian prime minister Indira Gandhi in effigy, and jubilation when she was assassinated on October 31, 1984. Moderate Sikhs who criticized Bhindranwale were threatened and beaten. And then on June 23, 1985, a bomb blast ripped through Tokyo’s Narita Airport, killing two baggage handlers. Less than an hour later, an Air-India flight en route from Toronto to New Delhi via Bombay exploded off the coast of Ireland.

Who Bombed Air India?
By Puneet S. Lamba
Who Bombed Air India?

Perhaps no one is better acquainted with the details of the Air India case and the surrounding events than Kim Bolan. She had barely joined the Vancouver Sun newspaper as a rookie reporter when Air India Flight 182 exploded in the sky on July 23, 1985, killing all 329 on board. Ever since, Bolan has doggedly followed the case for two decades, making four trips to India and several visits to Pakistan, the U.S., and the U.K.

This book, the result of her long and arduous 'sewa' (service, p. 206), takes the reader through the backdrop, the bombing, and the tortuous investigation that climaxed in the twin trials and acquittals of two Vancouver-based Sikhs, Ripudaman Singh Malik and Ajaib Singh Bagri.

The entire episode is packed with ironies. Cowards like Bagri, who publicly called for the murder of 'fifty thousand Hindus' (p. 46), are roaming free. Meanwhile, the few who demonstrated the courage to expose the violence and hatred were either assassinated or are living under death threats.

Tara Singh Hayer was the founding editor of the vernacular weekly Indo-Canadian Times. A failed attempt on his life on August 28, 1988, just days after he published his 'most pointed reference to Bagri' (p. 196), left him in a wheelchair. Harkirat Singh Bagga told the police that 'Bagri had provided him with the .357-caliber revolver he had used to shoot Hayer' (p. 191).

Tarsem Singh Purewal, publisher of the British Punjabi-language newspaper Des Pardes, was assassinated in 1995 after he 'wrote an article that was extremely critical of the I.S.Y.F. [International Sikh Youth Federation] and promised more exposés on the Babbar Khalsa' (p. 195).

'Rani Kumar' (not her real name) was the star witness against Malik. A note she had tucked into her journal said that 'if she were found dead, she had not committed suicide' (p. 153).

Many of the Sikhs at the forefront on both sides of the equation were 'born again' Sikhs. That is, they had shed the orthodox external regalia, including unshorn hair and turbans, only to reacquire the symbols in the religiously hyper-charged milieu following Operation Bluestar. (Bluestar was the Indian army's 1984 offensive on the Darbar Sahib or Golden Temple complex at Amritsar, Punjab, a Sikh Vatican of sorts.) Examples include Talwinder Singh Parmar, Bagri, and Hayer.

As the book makes clear, Canadian federal authorities might never have laid many of the related charges (e.g. against Malik's Khalsa School) had they not been repeatedly shamed into doing so by Bolan's proactive investigative journalism.

Inderjit Singh Reyat is the only person ever to have been convicted in connection with this case. He was convicted for manslaughter for making the bombs that destroyed two Air India craft, including Kanishka (Flight 182). The revolver used to shoot Hayer and the one found illegally in Reyat's possession were both traced back to the same source in California (p. 215).

Malik would surely not wish to be judged by the company he kept. The first three witnesses who took the stand in his defense were 'proven by the Crown [prosecution] to have a history of lying' (p. 328). One defense witness for Malik, Raminder Singh 'Mindy' Bhandher, admitted to having thrown rocks through the living room window of prosecution witness Narinder Gill in 1997 to keep him from disclosing financial irregularities at Malik's Khalsa School (p. 326). Another defense witness, Satwant Singh Sandhu, admitted to having made an on-air death threat against Bolan (p. 327).

Malik himself had 'lied under oath' at the hearing in connection with the funding for his legal defense for the Air India trial (p. 282).

According to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (R.C.M.P.), 'all [prosecution witnesses] had passed lie-detector tests that the defence witnesses had not had to take' (p. 349). The judge, Ian Josephson, declared defense witness Reyat to be 'an unmitigated liar under oath' (p. 339).

The prosecution, the defense, and the judge all 'accepted that Talwinder Parmar had masterminded the bombings' (p. 339). But if Parmar, the chief of the Babbar Khalsa, was the 'mastermind,' then how are Bagri, Parmar's self-acknowledged deputy (p. 315), and Malik, the Babbar Khalsa's primary financier (p. 32), to be regarded as innocent?

Given all of the above, it is no small miracle that Kim Bolan actually survived long enough to document her detailed findings. And for that we should all be grateful.

Terrorism wth Justice Gone Crazy
By John Matlock
An exceptional investigative report of terrorism perpetrated by militant Sikhs in Canada.

Kim Bolan was a cub reporter for The Vancouver Sun in 1985 when a bomb exploded on Air-India Flight 182 flying from Toronto, Canada to New Delhi, India. The plane exploded off the coast of Ireland killing all 329 passengers and crew aboard. Another bomb exploded at the airport in Narita, Japan killing two baggage handlers; this bomb was intended for another flight to India. The bombing was in retaliation for the attack by the Indian Army on the Golden Temple in Amristar, Punjab, Sikhism's holiest shrine in India.

The author of this fascinating book followed the incident for 20 years and became intimately involved with the families of the victims. She also became so knowledgeable about the terrorist perpetrators that her life was threatened. She lays responsibility for the tragedy on the extremist element of the Sikhs and on the Canadian government. Inept Canadian authorities, she says, failed to protect the innocent citizens of Indian descent and, 20 years later, the justice system failed to punish the guilty.

An Expose from a Muckraking Journalist
By Carl Robinson
Kim Bolan is a journalist from Vancouver who doesn't pull her punches. In this book she examines the bombing of Air India Flight 182 by a shadowy cabal of Sikhs in Canada. She tells the story of those on Air India Flight 182, their families, and their ultimately futile search for justice.

This is an extremely interesting resource about a far-off conflict brought to Canada with dynamite and loose immigration laws. It is a definitive account of one of the most spectacular terrorist attacks of the 1980s.
