The Irish War of Independence, by Michael Hopkinson

The Irish War of Independence was a sporadic guerrilla campaign taht lasted from January 1919 until July 1921. Michael Hopkinson makes full use of the recently opened files of the Bureau of Military Archives in Dublin, which contain valuable first-hand contemporary accounts of the war, meticulously piecing together the many disparate local actions to create a coherent narrative. He stresses the importance of local and contingent issues over the idea of a master plan developed by the Dublin-based republican leadership. The war was prosecuted ruthlessly by the Irish Republican Army which, paralleling the political efforts of Sinn Fein, hoped to break Britain's will to rule Ireland and create an independent Irish republic. The British retaliated by introducing two new irregular forces into Ireland, the Black and Tans and the Auxiliaries, Fighting took place principally in counties Cork, Limerick, Tipperary, Monaghan, Armagh, Clare, Kerry, and Longford. It was sporadic but vicious, with fewer than 2,000 IRA volunteers facing over 50,000 crown forces. The IRA depended upon energetic local leaders - where there were none, there was little fighting.

From Publishers Weekly
Historian Hopkinson (Green Against Green) has written an all-encompassing account of the Irish War of Independence (1919-1921), covering military, diplomatic and political issues. As Hopkinson points out, the war was largely one of tit-for-tat reprisal killings between the IRA and local police until the British brought in the Black and Tans, and the violence escalated to bloody guerrilla warfare. Hopkinson devotes a large part of the book to a localized, county-by-county recounting of the war: Dublin and Cork witnessed loads of violence, for instance, while Galway saw almost none. Hopkinson also describes at length how Michael Collins defeated the British through the use of informers and spies. As the author makes clear, the war could have ended in 1920, but a crucial diplomatic opportunity was lost. Hopkinson really knows his sources, using diaries and government documents to show how the British moved from a policy of coercion to one of negotiation. Indeed, the book's strongest point is its exploration of the behind-the-scenes shifts in British policy. Hopkinson's breadth is also impressive, as can be seen from his exploration of the American aspect of the war (the U.S. was a source of funds and weapons for the Irish. Indeed, Sinn Fein leader Eamon de Valera spent most of the war in the U.S. raising money and seeking American recognition). All in all, this is an exhaustive, if sometimes dry, account that should appeal to those interested in modern Irish history.

A good history but a dull read.
By T.Velasquez
Very precise history but very dry reading. The writer does not make the subject very exciting to read; however it is very thorough and knowledgeable. Interestingly, the author warns the reader at the start that his writing style is "different" and might take some getting used to. Instead of a linear approach, Hopkinson talks about one area or one thread through a period of time and then goes back to begin another thread at a different time. This in itself isn't the problem, its just that Hopkinson does not write very interesting prose. I know its a history and not a novel but I have read some histories by acclaimed historians which have kept me awake nights turning the next page, drew me into the events, and made me care or fear for people they were talking about. Hopkinson is not one of those authors.

On the "Pro" side though, the book does do what is advertised. You will be informed about The Irish War for Independence. Hopkinson portrays both sides of the struggle truthfully, exposing their strengths and failings. He is very harsh about the British response to Irish aspirations and he is also critical of the Irish in some of the ways they went about confronting the British. In this way, he is about as fair and balanced as you're going to get about a topic which many people still feel very strongly about, with strong feelings on both sides.

Excellent History of the Irish War of Independence
By Pat
This is a very comprehensive history of the War of Independence. The author presents both the Irish and British objectively when discussing successes, failures, and issues. The book is organized regionally which makes understanding timelines and overlapping events difficult. A timeline is given in an appendix. One negative is the author's use of acronyms that are not familiar to Americans without spelling them out first.

Excellent work
By Joseph C. Scott
Very thorough account of the Anglo-Irish War. His thematic and regional approach takes some getting used to, and he assumes a knowledge of British and Irish history some readers may not possess. Overall, though, this is a very effective, and important, work.
