Beautiful but Melancholy
By CC
Absolutely mesmerizing. I ended up not being able to read it before bed because it kept me up with a dark and anxious distaste for life. On the bright side, it makes one thankful when you compare yourself to the characters in the book, who are well developed and engaging, although hopeless. I reserved reading it to a brightly lit sunbeam. The book is beautiful and poetic however, and not in any pretentious way, which is refreshing. This is my first Alice Munro book and it surely won't be the last.

Masterful, multi-layered storytelling
By carol wisner
I thought I had read every word Alice Munro had ever written, but this title was unfamiliar to me--
Who Do You Think You Are is a book of connected short stories, featuring Rose, who always seems to know more than is acceptable for a woman of her time and place, and at the same time, doesn't quite have a handle on what other women seemingly know by instinct. The other character is Flo, her stepmother. The stories address the complexities of their relationship as it evolves over many years, as well as Rose's struggles to assume a life that she can reconcile with her intelligence, her love relationships, and the family and community she left behind.

An Alice Munro story is never easy to describe, because it is always about so many things. Her characters, and her deft observation of both their inner and outer worlds are longform poetry, if there is such a thing.
