About the Author
Richmond P. Hobson Jr. (1907-1966) was born in Washington, DC, where he worked with pack outfits, survey crews, and construction gangs, saving, all the while, to buy a cattle ranch. He came to Canada after the stock market crash of the late 1920s. He and his business partner, Panhandle "Pan" Phillips, moved to the interior of British Columbia and established the Frontier Cattle Company in the 1930s. He later married his wife, Gloria, moved to Vanderhoof, British Columbia, and continued ranching while writing about his experiences. Other books by Hobson are Grass Beyond the Mountains and The Rancher Takes a Wife.

The Real Thing!

I've read all three of Hobson's excellent books about his adventures in the Canadian wilderness. My son, who is a real cowboy in Montana, told me about the books, saying, "These books tell the real story, mom--this is what it's like out here, particularly during the long, lonely, winter days and nights." Hobson's writing style, simple yet eloquent imagery, is perfect. I actually got chills when reading about grizzly attacks and those 70-degree below nights when both man and beast had to work to stay alive. Great stories, great writing!

An American cowboy in British Columbia . . .

This enjoyable and well-written cowboy memoir takes readers to the hinterlands of central British Columbia during the war years of 1939-1942. The author and his partner Panhandle Phillips take over the two-million-acre Frontier Cattle Company, located in grassland valleys among the mountain ranges, several days' ride from the nearest town and over 200 miles from the nearest rail line. It is a land where winters are severe, and the first challenge facing them is a December cattle drive that ends in near-disaster as the men are overtaken by a fierce blizzard and sub-zero temperatures.
The son of an admiral in the U.S. Navy, Hobson is an educated Easterner living a life of pioneering adventure on one of the last western frontiers on the continent. His story is peopled with a large cast of memorable characters, including cowhands, ranchers, storekeepers, and Indians. His gifts as a writer are many, as he intensifies the suspense and drama of several high-risk enterprises and fully relishes the humor in others. The attempt to transport a herd of wild horses by night from an offshore island to the Vancouver stockyards is told with a masterful grasp of knee-slapping farce. There's even a little romance, as our cowboy hero goes in breathless search of the girl of his dreams, armed only with a snapshot of her standing beside a prize Jersey bull. Readers will also enjoy Paul St. Pierre's short stories and novels set a decade later in the same remote ranch country.

Exciting real cowboy life.

I had not finished reading Richmond P. Hobson Jr's first book, "Grass Beyond the Mountains" before I ordered his second in the series, "Nothing Too Good for a Cowboy." And then I could hardly wait until the last in the series arrived, "the Rancher Takes a Wife."
I was disappointed when I finished this book. I'm an underliner and margin note writer in most of my books. While I participated in a real cattle drive and branding while living in Sheridan, WY, riding my own horse, I do not have the courage and commitment, the inner strength to live the life that the real people in these books did.
Throughout this book, I kept waiting for his new bride, Gloria, to say "I've had it. It's me or this ranch!" Wow, did my admiration of this woman rise to super heights as I saw her skin turn white from frost bite, was surprised time and again by her fabulous positive attitude, but wanted to scream at her during the occasions when she almost got them killed. When she faced eight Grizzlies alone, my heart rate was higher than it is when I exercise on our Recumbent exerciser. She had an awesome sense of humor.
It's almost impossible for me to rank a top choice from among all these three books! They are just fantastic! Well written, but with a down-home manner of describing impossible situations that had the hair standing up on the back of my neck. I have an entirely new look and admiration that rises 30,000 feet for these real cowboys who lived and survived in 70 below zero blizzards, driving cattle at night, facing the giant black wolves, and grizzlies, and charging moose and scores of other dangers, life-threatening injuries and sicknesses, and return to their carved-out - by hand I might add - home and ranch in a wilderness beyond my imagination to picture, the wilds of northern British Columbia during the years before and after my birth. These were real men and real woman!
I wish every American family could read this series of three books by the man who lived it all, Richmond P. Hobson Jr.
Read these books and I'm sure you'll agree with me that even my toughest Hollywood actor cowboys, would bow and be awe struck with the tough-beyond-words reality displayed in these exciting, thrilling, shocking and inspiring series.
The Rancher Takes a Wife is like the cimbals and drums crashing at the end of a grand orchestral symphony! Hobson pulled out all stops on this last volume. If you want to read these, please begin with the first in the series, for the true historical setting and the unimaginable setting where two cowboy pardners search out the millions of acres they decide to build a cattle empire on, all by themselves! It is a series and the flow of the true story follows the order. Otherwise while you'll enjoy The Rancher Takes a Wife, you'll have questions unanswered that only the first two volumns do answer.
Be prepared to get joyfully lost in excitement and amazement. And if you're not married yet, I sure hope you can find a woman half as tough as Gloria, the wife this rancher took.
