The War Diary of Clare Gass (McGill-Queen’s/Associated Medical Services Studies in the History of Medicine, H), by Clare Gass, Susan

The diary reveals a woman who took it for granted that she should do everything possible to aid the war effort and details her care of the sick and wounded at No. 3 Canadian General Hospital (McGill), forty miles behind the trenches, as well as at No. 2 Canadian Casualty Clearing Station, where she was within range of the shells. Combined with Susan Mann's sensitive and thoughtful introduction, the Gass diary provides a fresh look at Canadian participation in the First World War. It will appeal to a wide range of readers with an interest in military history, women's history, medical history, gender and war, diaries, and the history of nursing.

Review
"A fresh contribution to our understanding of the military and medical history during this period, shedding light on the ambivalent attitudes towards the war that were held by the people closest to it. Mann's introduction is sensitively written, and reveals that the editor has done considerable background research on the subject." Jonathan F. Vance, author of Death So Noble: Memory, Meaning, and the First World War "A major contribution to the field of Canadian military and women's history. Not only does Mann bring into the public domain a primary source hitherto unknown to scholars, but she also uses her splendid introduction to offer a timely critique of military and nursing history that continues to quickly pass over the work of the Nursing Sisters. The diary is exceedingly rich in detail and throughout offers evidence of the emotional turmoil and war weariness that we hope to find in primary sources. Unlike many diaries that become repetitious and boring, this one often delights and surprises. I read it in one gulp and wished for more." Margaret Conrad, Department of History, Acadia University

What life and death were like during the "Great War"
By Midwest Book Review
Clare Gass was a nurse with the rank of lieutenant, serving with the Canadian Army Medical Corps in France during World War I for four long years. She documented her daily experiences from her military training in 1915 to her return from Europe in 1918. She had a gift for recording the sights, sounds, and smells of war, and in addition to her nursing duties, found time to explore the countryside around the hospital and took photographs as well. Ardently recommended for students of twentieth century military history, medical history, women's history, and unique autobiographies, The War Diary Of Clare Gass, 1915-1918 offers a unique, eye-witness, "window through time" to what life and death were like during the "Great War" as seen through the eyes of a battlefield nurse.

Very good. A personal glimpse into WWI from a different angle...
By Lincoln Rodman
Clare Gass was a Canadian nurse near the front in WWI and served for nearly the entire duration of the War, allowing her to provide her unique perspective on events from the beginning to the bitter end.

She is a fairly poetic writer, but given to misspellings that seem to increase in quantity with the stress of the assignment.

The diary was salvaged by a descendant, who writes a very good foreword that both sets the stage for the diary entries and prepares the reader for the non-traditional style of book that follows.

Clare Gass seems like quite an individual. It is fortunate that someone had the initiative to collect the parts of the diary and enter them into the historical record.

The footnote system is quite inconvenient, however. Really, it should have been redone before they went to final printing. Notes at the bottom of the page to read easily in context for a book like this. In this case, having notes at the end of the book would be tolerable, but they are separated by the year of the diary. with each such section of the appendix starting again at "note 1" for that year. As a result, it is annoying if you try to track down more than one or two notes while reading.
