PAULA TODD is an investigative journalist, lawyer and the bestselling author of EXTREME MEAN: Trolls, Bullies and Predators Online, which reveals the real reasons adults, youth and kids torment, harass, stalk and sexually extort online, along with the solutions. She became the first journalist in Canada to break news in an e-book with Finding Karla: How I Tracked Down An Elusive Child Serial Killer and Discovered a Mother of Three. She spent more than a decade as a full-time reporter with the Toronto Star, and another decade-plus hosting news programs at CTV and TVO. A frequent speaker and educator, she is a broadcast and digital media professor, and the Chair of Digital Issues for Canadian Journalists for Free Expression, and holds an LL.B from Osgoode Hall Law School.

I did feel like there were parts that repeated and it felt a ...

As someone who has suffered for two years from cyberabuse, this book really hit home for me. I did feel like there were parts that repeated and it felt a little redundant at times but it really puts the whole picture into perspective on the mind of a person who could commit such hurtful and despicable acts. A lot of the book focuses on teen and adolescent bullying, but it does pick up a little on how adults are bullied as well. The sad truth is that there are more options for kids and teens who are being bullied than there is for adults. Law enforcement seems to be little help all around but even more so for adult victims. Although some states are pretty strict about cyber bullying and cyber stalking, others are still behind the times and it's easier than ever for the perpetrators to get away with it. Social sites are no help as well despite the terms of service stating that any form of harassment and bullying will not be tolerated. As a matter of fact, many cyber abusers find loopholes such as making multiple profiles to make anonymous threats and spread slander.
This book is a huge wake up call to those who don't realize how bad bullying has become in the digital age. Many suggest "ignoring" or "logging off" but the truth is that a lot of times, these actions drive the bully or predator to push back even harder. Bullies and predators have narcissistic tendencies and will try even harder to get attention when they are being ignored, sometimes even venturing outside of cyber space and into real life bullying, harassing and stalking. Cyber abuse is an serious problem and it's only getting worse.

A MUST READ FOR ANYONE WHO USES THE INTERNET!!!

Paula Todd has again used her astounding talent as an investigative journalist to deeply research and write a fascinating, account of what most of us scarcely suspect goes on behind the veil of the internet. Using some absolutely terrifying, true accounts of cyber bullying and cyber abuse, she vividly portrays the very dark side of what can go on online. Well known, and lesser known stories portray, one after another, the variety of cyber bullying, and cyber abuse that can, and does take place on a horrifyingly regular basis. Just as one starts to feel like all is lost and the best thing to do is turn off the computer/ cell phone/ other device, Todd offers hope, optimism and a well reasoned, and again researched and supported answer. Something we can all partake in to, in her words "take back the Internet". Anyone who has children who go online, indeed, anyone who uses the internet should not miss this most important book.

Excellent intro to the subject

Excellent intro to the subject. I was generally aware of the problem, mostly through heartbreaking suicides that received media attention. I was surprised, however, at how depraved some of the people are. I never dreamed that people tormented parents whose children committed suicide. And I was stunned by the utter emptiness of some of these kids. The author tells of one young girl who didn't "give a f**k" that her online harassment of another girl had contributed to the girl's suicide. Perhaps even more disturbing--though sadly not surprising--was the response of the young tormentor's mother. The mother claimed that the girl's account had been hacked and that her daughter had not, in fact, posted the "don't give a f**k" response. This "my kid is never wrong" response is all too typical of today's parents, which brings me to a question: Where are the parents of these kids?
I remember well the realities of peer pressure, but weren't these parents able to instill at least some baseline behavioral standards in these kids? And here I reveal my bias, but throughout this book I found myself wondering: Does God play no role in the lives of the people? Do they not understand that there are God-given rules about how humans are to treat others? While we all fall short of the ideal, have these people never developed a conscience?
If I understood her correctly, the author's position is that it's a mistake to differentiate between Internet-based interactions and the "real world." I disagree. In the real world, real things are made, real physical activity happens, real human interaction occurs. I'm reminded of a young German Baptist boy (think Amish Light) I spoke with a few years ago at a craft fair. He was selling rugs that his family had woven on a massive old loom, and he proudly showed photographs of the family working together on the loom and pointed out the rugs he'd worked on. Yes, he is a member of a religious minority, but he truly was living in the real world. His days and nights weren't spent typing into the ozone, looking for friendship or worse in a digital world that can be a complete fabrication.
The author mentions the "dark web." I've heard that term many times before but don't really know what it is. I would have appreciated an explanation. And finally--and this is more observation than quibble--when the author wishes to cite an example of incivility involving well-known individuals, she invariably chooses a political conservative. Leftists, apparently, do not misbehave.
