Not your starry eyed biography of a saint-to-be

Even today people still seem to want to put holy people on pedestals and pretend they were perfect even though such biographies are stilted and now dusty so I'm very glad that Raymond Arroyo didn't do that with Mother Angelica in this book. He not only writes about Mother Angelica but also the implosion of her community while she lay suffering yet fully aware of the chaos and conflict amongst her beloved Sisters. One of the Sisters quoted in the book hit the nail on the head - perhaps lack of formation in the later years added to the stampede to get away from such a (for them) toxic environment. So sad all this happened as Mother Angelica lay helpless and unable to intervene except through prayer, to see her life's work crumble must have been a true crucifixion for her. The sisters, her community, were her life's work even more so than EWTN. I'm sending this book off to a Poor Clare Abbess I know as an object lesson; I don't think she needs it as she's a very strong superior but still it is an important reminder as to what can happen where there is a lack of formation in the early years. I applaud Mr. Arroyo for his honesty.

A touching and inspirational book

An excellent book by Raymond Arroyo to complete the biography of Mother's life. While some reviewers were disturbed by revelations of difficulties in the sisters community, I personally found it a profound reminder of our humanity and that we are all struggling sinners with the potential to become saints as Mother always said. Most saints lives were filled with imperfections and struggles so its no shock to me that the sisters had struggles too. The book certainly brought to light Mother's great courage and perseverance amidst her own sufferings and that of her community. I enjoyed the stories of those whose lives Mother touched deeply tho I thought that section was a bit long. In the end, it is an excellent book about Mother's deep faith and the great amount of good she brought to the world and the many lives she touched including mine. Raymond fulfilled Mother's command to print the unvarnished truth about her life, and I personally found the book a great encouragement about living in the present moment and a reminder that the spiritual journey is filled with ups and downs even in religious communities.

I thoroughly enjoyed the book

The candor with which Raymond Arroyo tells the story of Mother's silent years is so heartfelt and inspiring. I thoroughly enjoyed the book, and gained new wisdom from dear Mother through what she was able to communicate during those years as well as the stories of times before. Great insight into how her community is composed of real people with real issues, not "saints" as we may perceive them, and how they worked through their issues just like we all have to do in real life. Thank you, Mr. Arroyo, for allowing us a glimpse into your close relationship with Mother Angelica and enabling us to love her even more through you. Like the lovely letters that were shared in the book, she changed my life for the better through her ministry, and continues to do so.
