Specialized History of Liverpool for the Serious Historian

The author, Gomer Williams, wrote this book towards the end of the nineteenth centry, but it is more applicable today for a contemporary historian than it was at the time of writing. Professor Eltis has done us all a great service by bringing it forward.
The first part of the book covers privateering, particularly the French and Indian War, the Revolutionary War, French Revolution and the War of 1812. Although fairly heavy going, a student of naval warfare and its effect on trade and economics would be well advised to use this volume to more clearly understand the type of actions taken by private parties for profit in wartime during this period. Both profits and risks were huge, with one voyage being a total loss while another would bring tremendous profits.
The second part deals with the slave trade and Liverpool's role as a primary origin of slave trading vessels. The author treats the subject as a legitimate emterprise, and recounts many voyages and their impact on Africans and Englishmen alike with great clarity. This is a volume for the dispassionate historian to digest without his vision being distorted by contemporary viewpoints.
Although the detail is a little excessive, there is much to be learned. Many historical nuggets are buried in the details, and this book requires close reading. Even Banastre Tarleton is seen in a favorable light, for example. It is a period piece, perhaps not as worthy as Samuel Pepys's diary, but of the same ilk to a historian attempting to place himself in a time long past.
